During a recent interview on Wood Paige’s podcast, former Denver Broncos running back Terrell Davis talked about “The Hit,” a preseason tackle on special teams that helped launch his NFL career.
“That’s the one play that not only I remember but most people remember me from that play,” Davis said.
Davis said he played on special teams — specifically on kickoffs — from Pop Warner up until college, so he had plenty of experience tackling returners.
“That was kind of second nature to me to do that,” Davis said.
Davis said growing up, his dad would give $5 to him or his brother if they managed to record a tackle on a kickoff. That created an in-game competition between the two brothers that gave them extra motivation to beat each other to the tackle.
“There was no luck involved,” Davis said. “That was kind of me going back to what I used to do growing up.”
The Davis interview starts around the 24-minute mark of the podcast.
