Tennessee (7-5, 4-4 SEC) will play Purdue (8-4, 6-3 Big Ten) in the TransPerfect Music City Bowl Dec. 30 at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee.
Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. EST and the game will be televised on ESPN.
The contest is the second all time between the two schools.
The two teams played in the Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl on Dec. 31, 1979 at the Astrodome in Houston, Texas.
Purdue defeated Tennessee, 27-22.
The Boilermakers, led by College Football Hall of Fame quarterback Mark Herrmann, opened a 14-0 halftime lead at halftime after a scoreless first quarter.
Purdue scored first on a 6-yard run by Ben McCall. Kicker John Seibel added an extra point to give the Boilermakers a 7-0 lead.
Herrmann connected with Bart Burrell for a touchdown, extending Purdue’s lead to 14-0.
In the third quarter, Herrmann connected with Dave Young for a touchdown pass, giving Purdue a 21-0 lead.
The Vols scored its first touchdown of the game when quarterback Jimmy Streater connected with Glenn Ford from eight yards out to pull the Big Orange to within 21-6. UT, however missed the two-point conversion.
The Vols totaled 16 points in the fourth quarter as Streater recorded a touchdown pass to James Berry and Hubert Simpson scored a 1-yard touchdown run. Simpson would run for a pair of two-point conversions and UT took a 22-21 lead.
The Vols rallied despite committing five turnovers in the contest.
Purdue would win late as Herrmann passed for a 17-yard touchdown to Young. The Boilermakers missed a two-point conversion.
Herrmann completed 21-of-39 passes for 303 yards and three touchdowns. He was named the game’s MVP.
