Tennessee wins series at Georgia

Vols down Bulldogs 4-1 to win first SEC series.

Blade Tidwell posted a sparkling performance on the mound and Tennessee manufactured enough offense to win its series finale at Georgia.

The series at Georgia opened Southeastern Conference play during the 2021 season.

Tidwell pitched 7.1 innings. He gave up one run and four hits as the No. 10 Volunteers claimed a 4-1 victory over Georgia Sunday afternoon at Foley Field in Athens.

Tidwell (3-1) struck out six, while walking just two for Tennessee (17-4, 2-1 SEC).

Offensively, the Vols were on the board first when Pete Derkay scored as Drew Gilbert reached on an error by the Bulldogs (14-5, 1-2 SEC).

Luc Lipscius extended UT’s advantage to 2-0 when he came home on a wild pitch in the fourth. The Vols added another run on an RBI single by Gilbert that plated Derkay.

Gilbert, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, knocked in Connor Pavolony with the game’s final run with a sacrifice fly.

Derkay finished the day 1-for-4 with two runs.

The Bulldogs tallied a run in the sixth on an RBI groundout.

Tidwell gave way to Kirby Connell, who retired the only batter he faced in the eighth.

Camden Sewell then threw 1.1 innings to pick up the save. He surrendered a hit and recorded one strikeout.
