The Vols will have stiff competition for Matthews’ signature. The 6-foot, 186-pound sophomore at Ponchatoula High School already has offers from Alabama, Miami, LSU, Mississippi State and Utah.
Rated a 4-star cornerback by 247Sports, Matthews is listed as the No. 12 cornerback in his class, and the No. 7 overall player in the state of Louisiana.
Tennessee has depth at cornerback in 2020, with Alontae Taylor and Bryce Thompson returning for their junior seasons. Although freshmen such as Keshawn Lawrence, Doneiko Slaughter and Tamarion McDonald could help at corner, it will be an upperclassmen-heavy rotation in Pruitt’s third season.
Defensive back will likely be a priority for Tennessee in the 2021 and 2022 cycle. The Vols do not currently have any players committed to the 2022 recruiting class.
