When former Georgetown guard Mac McClung announced his transfer following his sophomore season, talk began to surface that Tennessee was in the mix.
The Vols have experienced significant success on the recruiting trail and also landing Sacred Heart transfer E.J. Anosike and Oregon guard Victor Bailey Jr. in the last two offseasons.
There was also the idea that McClung’s multiple connections to Tennessee would bode well for the Vols, as his older sister Anna McClung played soccer at UT from 2013-16, and his hometown of Gate City, Virginia is less than a two-hour drive from Knoxville.
McClung released his top seven schools on Wednesday, however UT was not included.

One of Texas Tech, Auburn, Memphis, USC, BYU, Arkansas or Wake Forest will land the talented guard. McClung averaged over 15 points and three rebounds per game for Georgetown in 2019-20, and has attracted national attention for his dunking ability at just 6-foot-2.
While Tennessee will not get the chance to add McClung to its roster, it will still have loads of depth for the 2020-21 season. After bringing in a top five 2020 recruiting class and adding a pair of transfers that will be eligible, Rick Barnes returns starters John Fulkerson, Santiago Vescovi, and Josiah Jordan-James to the lineup.
McClung would have been a nice addition to Barnes’ squad, but would likely have had to sit out for a season. The Vols will have high expectations next year under Barnes with or without Mac McClung.
