Tennessee in the mix for elite 2021 cornerback.

Tennessee has a shot to land Tony Grimes – the No. 1 cornerback in the country on the 247Sports composite – according to his Twitter post on Wednesday.

Other than Tennessee, Grimes narrowed down his top eight schools to Clemson, Virginia, Texas A&M, Ohio State, Penn State, North Carolina and Georgia.

The Virginia Beach product is a player coaches love for his football IQ, on-field leadership and versatility as an excellent coverage corner and tackler. The 6-foot, 180-pound junior at Princess Ames High School is a 5-star prospect, and also rated as the No. 7 overall player in his class.

With defensive back gurus on staff in head coach Jeremy Pruitt and defensive coordinator Derrick Ansley, UT typically puts itself in good position to land highly rated defensive backs, but have some elite competition for Grimes.

Tennessee is riding some momentum on the recruiting trail since the COVID-19 outbreak shut down all on-campus activities. The Vols’ 2021 recruiting class now sits as the No. 13 class in the country on 247Sports, and No. 2 in the SEC. Tennessee’s only cornerback recruit in the class is 3-star Jay Jones from Alabama.
