Tennessee football: Players who wore No. 50

KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee has a proud football program rich in tradition and history, and over the years many great players have played on Rocky Top.

Vols Wire looks at what players wore each jersey number for the Volunteers.

No. 50

The number goes back in UT football history to 1938 and it was first worn by Edwin Sellers. A center for the Big Orange, Sellers sported the number for one season in Knoxville.

It was later worn by offensive guard Chip Kell, a two-time All-America standout in 1969 and 1970.

The Decatur, Georgia native played on a Southeastern Conference championship team as a junior. He came to Rocky Top as a center in 1968.

He went on to be drafted by the San Diego Chargers and played in the Canadian Football League for the Edmonton Eskimos from 1971-72. The VFL was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006 and is also a member of the Tennessee Football Hall of Fame.
