Tennessee football: Players who wore No. 37

KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee has a proud football program rich in history and tradition, and over the years many great players have played on Rocky Top.

Vols Wire looks as which players wore each jersey number for the Volunteers.

No. 37

The number goes back in Vols lore to 1936 and was first worn by one of Tennessee’s top players and coaches to ever come through the program.

End Bowden Wyatt was the first to don the number at UT and he was a team captain for the Vols in 1938 when they went 11-0 under the guidance of coach Robert Neyland and won a national championship and beat Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl.

He later coached at Tennessee and the Kingston native posted a 49-24-4 record as coach of the Volunteers. He won a Southeastern Conference championship in 1956 and was named SEC and American Football Coaches Association Coach of the Year.

He also coached at Wyoming and Arkansas and won 99 games in his career.

Wyatt was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as a player in 1972 and as a coach in 1997.

Peerless Price, a wide receiver, wore the number between 1996-98 and made some big catches during his time in Knoxville. He later played for the Buffalo Bills, Atlanta Falcons and Dallas Cowboys. In his pro career, he nabbed more than 400 receptions and scored 31 touchdowns.

Clark Duncan also wore the number at Tennessee. He is currently the football coach and athletic director at Knoxville’s South-Doyle High School.
