Tennessee football: Players who wore No. 31

KNOXVILLE — The University of Tennessee has a football program rich in history and tradition, and over the years many great players have played on Rocky Top.

Vols Wire looks at which players wore each jersey number for the Volunteers.

No. 31

The number was first worn at UT by Van Kelly in 1937. Kelly wore it for one season and played center for the Big Orange.

It would later be donned by running back Jamal Lewis.

Lewis, a native of Atlanta, was the SEC Freshman of the Year in 1997 and played on the Vols’ undefeated BCS National Championship team in 1998.

After leaving Rocky Top, he was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round of the 2000 NFL Draft. He won a Super Bowl with the Ravens and played for the Cleveland Browns later in his career.
