Tennessee baseball history: Head coach Frank Moffett

Tennessee baseball history: Head coach Frank Moffett

Tennessee first fielded a baseball team in 1897 and went 6-9 under the direction of head coach Doak Aydolott, who spent one year as the school’s coach.

The Vols then had a different head coach every year until Frank Moffett arrived on Rocky Top in 1903.

Moffett had long been involved in professional baseball as a manager in Knoxville and Asheville.

Moffett took the reins of Tennessee’s baseball program in 1903. He was the first head coach to spend multiple seasons at Tennessee.

The Tennessee native had three tenures as the Vols’ head coach from 1903-05, 1907-10 and 1918-19.

He compiled a record of 94-54-2 while at the helm for the Vols.

After leaving Tennessee for the final time, Moffett  remained active as a manager in the minor leagues in East Tennessee and North Carolina.

Moffett was later named head coach at Lincoln Memorial University, where he coached the Railsplitters for one season before his death in 1935.
