Tekken 8 will support crossplay, director confirms

Katsuhiro Harada claims he always wanted to implement the feature, but several platforms were ‘at odds with each other.’

There’s no question that Tekken 8 is going to be massive, and it sounds like you’ll be able to play with friends regardless of whatever console or platform everyone is using.

On Saturday, Tekken franchise director Katsuhiro Harada took the time to answer a fan’s burning question about the possibility of Tekken 8 supporting crossplay (the functionality that allows you to play against others whether they’re on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or PC).

“Crossplay? Of course,” Harada said on Twitter. “[By the way] when the previous generation consoles were released, I had already proposed crossplay between the two platformers. However, at that time, they were at odds with each other over their mutual interests (and [peer-to-peer] security [issues]) & repeatedly refused.”

Crossplay is pretty well a games industry standard by now, especially for an esports-centric title like Tekken 8. However, while Harada’s comment is promising, he didn’t specify whether or not Tekken 8 will have crossplay at release or if it’ll arrive in post-launch updates. We’ll just have to wait and see how this pans out!

In any event, longtime franchise fans have been clamoring for crossplay since Tekken 8‘s spectacular reveal last summer. Most consider Tekken to be among the very best fighting games – many of which already support crossplay – so it only makes sense for the eighth installment to follow suit.
