The New England Patriots are typically bold enough to think they can reclaim a seemingly-expired career. With tight end Jordan Reed, who the Redskin released on Thursday, he seems like a lost cause, through not fault of his own. He spent all of the 2019 season on injured reserve with a concussion issue. And he’s dealt with injuries through his career. But the Patriots aren’t afraid to change the perception about a supposed lost cause.
Will they pursue Reed?
At the least, New England should give him a look with a workout. From a talent standpoint, he was an impressive tight end in 2018, when Reed managed 54 catches, 558 yards and two touchdowns in 13 games. But of course, he was hard to keep on the field, which is why the Patriots, ultimately, may decide not to sign him. A doctor’s opinion on Reed is probably far more important than a football evaluator. If a doctor says Reed is capable, then he’s a worthwhile target. Of course, we’ll (likely) never know what the Patriots’ doctors say about a player, but it will probably be the most crucial piece of information for Reed to join a team.
The Redskins have released TE Jordan Reed, per source.

Considering quarterback Tom Brady, a pending free agent, wants to see the Patriots amassing weapons on offense, New England could begin that effort with Reed. That can hardly be where it stops — he would probably be unlikely to make the team, even if he did sign. But again, it’s an effort to show Brady the Patriots are thinking about improving the offense. Every signing counts, if a potential bust like Reed.
So long as he’s healthy, the Patriots signing Reed to a small deal couldn’t hurt. They certainly need to get aggressive at the position, considering their three tight ends finished with just 36 receptions, 418 yard and a touchdown in 2019.
