Tar Heels lose out on three-star safety in 2024 class

The UNC football program has lost out on a three-star safety in the 2024 recruiting class.

Mack Brown and the UNC football program received some bad news in terms of a 2024 recruiting target.

On Thursday, three-star safety Zahir Rainer ended his recruitment and pledged a verbal commitment to Minnesota. Rainer announced his decision via 247Sports, picking the Gophers over Virginia, Virginia Tech, Duke, North Carolina, Stanford, and Wake Forest as his finalists.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pound safety is a Richmond, Virginia native that plays at Trinity Episcopal School. He took a few different visits in his recruitment but his visit to Minnesota sealed the deal for the talented safety, giving the Gophers another 2024 commit.

For North Carolina, the Tar Heels were hoping to add to their secondary in the 2024 class. However, they will have to look at other targets now with plenty of time left in the recruiting cycle.
