Tale of the Tape: Leading Receivers – Michael Mayer vs. Devin Maddox

Call this one big vs. little.

Notre Dame and Toledo are teams both similar and different in terms of leading receivers. Tight end Michael Mayer was the Irish’s top returning receiver from 2020, and so far, he’s shown that he won’t relinquish the 2021 title very easily. Reaching the century mark and finding the end zone during the first game of the season, Mayer made a statement that he won’t be easy to contain, especially with that 6-foot-4, 251-pound frame of his. Opposing defenses might have to force double coverage onto him early and often.

The Rockets have a more traditional leader in this category in Devin Maddox, particularly in that he actually plays receiver. Like Mayer, he already has a touchdown and wasn’t far behind in receiving yards in his first game. However, he is much smaller than Mayer, measuring 5-foot-9 and 170 pounds. In fact, no one on the Irish is that short or weighs that little, so his body alone will not be enough to get the best of the secondary he will be facing.
