Za’Darius Smith continues to give back to the Cleveland community

Cleveland Browns defensive end Za’Darius Smith cleaned out a local Walmart to support a Cleveland charity.

Cleveland Browns defensive end Za’Darius Smith cleared off the shelves at a local Walmart to support a Cleveland charity. X user Rickonia posted a photo, and video of Smith donating a lot of food, clothes, school supplies, and more for kids in inner-city Cleveland. Smith reportedly bought out the entire Walmart.

Smith signed a two-year extension with the Browns during the offseason. The $23 million deal will keep him with the Browns until he turns 34. The veteran defensive end is entering his 10th season in the league. It’s

Smith was a good signing by the Browns. The veteran has developed strong chemistry with fellow pass rusher Myles Garrett. The former Baltimore Raven has shed his dark feathers. The Browns are lucky to have found Garrett a partner in crime in Smith. Smith looks like a standup guy both on and off the field.

The two are expected to have strong seasons this year. They play the Dallas Cowboys in the season-opener.

Browns get a star pass rusher back on the practice field on Day 2 of joint practices vs. Vikings

The star defensive end is back at practice

Last week, Cleveland Browns fans everywhere held their breath when they heard that defensive end Za’Darius Smith was carted off the field with a knee injury. But it came out over the coming days that it was a minor knee contusion and that he wouldn’t miss serious time.

On Thursday, the second joint practice with the Minnesota Vikings, Smith returned to the practice field for the Browns. Having him opposite Myles Garrett creates such a ridiculous pair, and his ability to play inside gives Jim Schwartz so much flexibility and options to confuse offenses.

Cleveland has the deepest group of edge rushers in the NFL, and they are entering their second season under Schwartz. After the two joint practices with Minnesota, the Browns will host their second home game of the preseason this Saturday against the Vikings. After the joint practices, there is a good chance that even fewer starters play than against the Packers.

How rookie DI Michael Hall Jr. could perfect the Browns’ defensive line

Rookie DI Michael Hall Jr. has the traits to fill in one crucial position in the Browns’ impressive defensive line.

We have learned over the last few seasons in the NFL that interior pressure against the quarterback is perhaps more important than it’s ever been before. As offenses are throwing more out of quick game concepts — one- and three-step drop passes and RPOs — there are times when, no matter how great the edge defender may be, he simply doesn’t have time to affect the quarterback with his array of moves. So, the closer you are in a straight line to the quarterback, the better chance you have of actually creating problems for that enemy offense.

Last season, Dexter Lawrence of the New York Giants was by far the league’s best true interior pass-rusher. Per Sports Info Solutions, Lawrence totaled five sacks, 12 quarterback hits, and 14 quarterback hurries from the 0-tech (head over the center) and 1-tech (to either shoulder of the center) positions. Jarran Reed of the Seattle Seahawks, Kobie Turner of the Los Angeles Rams, Bryan Bresee of the New Orleans Saints, and Michael Pearce of the Baltimore Ravens also had stellar seasons when asked to create pressure right up the middle.

For the Browns last season, as effective as their defensive fronts were, that up-the-middle pressure was a bit tougher to come by. Dalvin Tomlinson led the team with two quarterback hits and five quarterback hurries in those 0-tech and 1-tech roles; no other Browns defender had more than two total pressures.

Enter Ohio State’s Michael Hall Jr., the 6′ 2¾”, 290-pound defensive tackle selected by the Browns with the 54th overall pick in the second round of the 2024 draft. Last season for the Buckeyes, Hall had two sacks, five quarterback hits, and 22 quarterback hurries in 228 pass-rushing snaps, which is a pretty good pressure rate for a guy who spent 65% of his snaps inside the guards. More importantly for the Browns’ purposes, Hall had one sack, four quarterback hits, and 17 quarterback hurries aligned at either 0- or 1-tech. And he could get those sacks and pressures with technique and raw strength.

“Yeah, pass rush is a premium no matter what,” Browns Director of Player Personnel Dan Saganey said of Hall after Cleveland had secured the player. “I mean, we see the guys that hit the market this year even signed extensions recently at the D tackle position. It’s a highly paid, highly coveted position. And taking a guy like Mike, very good quickness, twitch power, and has really the ideal skill set for what we’re looking for out of a 3-technique, when you see guys like that, they kind of jump off the tape. In college, a lot of college teams play odd fronts or play three guys where it’s, you have more DBs than linebackers on the field. But a guy like Mike really was identified pretty early here as a guy that’s a perfect scheme fit for us and fits what we do. And again, it is something that we’re always looking to add wherever we can.”

It’s interesting that Saganey identified Hall as an ideal 3-tech. He has the traits to disrupt from outside the guards, but based on his college tape, I might err on moving him inside — especially on third down — and letting him hunt. That’s where Hall could fill in one blank on an otherwise dominant defensive line.

PFF analyst ranks the Browns’ defensive line in the Top 5 of the NFL

Cleveland will have one of the best groups again in 2024

The 2023 Cleveland Browns defensive line was one of the more disruptive units in the NFL last year. Defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz found a way to maximize the skillset and talent of the players along his defensive line.

In total, last year, the Browns had 365 quarterback pressures, led by Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett and veteran Za’Darius Smith. Sam Monson of PFF released a list ranking the defensive line groups, with the Browns finding themselves number five overall ahead of the 2024 season.

The only issue I have with this list is that I’m not positive there are four defensive lines that are better from top to bottom than the Browns. The team added even more pass rush upside, bringing in Michael Hall Jr. and veteran Quinton Jefferson while bringing back Shelby Harris and Za’Darius Smith.

It is hard to find holes in the Browns’ defensive line, from top to bottom, both pass rush-wise and run defense-wise. Ultimately, this group will be one of the best again in the NFL, and PFF agrees with that statement.

Poll: Which Browns player will be second on the team in sacks in 2024

Will Za’Darius Smith be number two again in 2024?

The 2023 Cleveland Browns pass rush was a formidable force under Jim Schwartz, led by Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett. Then the team added even more talented pass rushers, signing veteran defensive tackle Quinton Jefferson and drafting the hyper-athletic Michael Hall Jr. out of Ohio State.

Za’Darius Smith had a great first season with the Browns, even though his sack numbers weren’t as impressive as his tape. Ultimately, he was second on the team in sacks last year, though Alex Wright and Ogbo Okoronkwo were right on his heels.

Okoronkwo has already made a bold prediction: He is shooting for double-digit sacks in 2024, something he could realistically do if he stays healthy. Could the rookie Hall make a run at second on the team in sacks? He will be a rotational pass rusher at first, but with all the talent around him, Hall has a real chance to make an impact and rack up the sacks.

So, if you had to make a prediction today, who do you think will be second on the team in sacks in 2024?

PFF has two Browns pass rushers in their top 32 heading into 2024

Cleveland lands two players in the top 17

The Cleveland Browns defensive end group is one of the best and most deep of any team in the NFL heading into 2024. PFF seems to agree about the talent ranking of two of Cleveland’s rushers in the top 32 and the top 17. The defending NFL Defensive Player of the Year, Myles Garrett, is number one on the list, while Za’Darius Smith is not far behind.

“Garrett was nothing short of sensational in 2023, with a league-best 94.7 pass-rush grade. What else is new? His 27.3% pass-rush win rate was one of the highest marks in PFF history.”

Garrett’s running made, and number two in Smith checks in at 17 on the list.

“You can’t just use the Myles Garrett effect as a way to brush off Smith’s 85.3 overall grade and 86.6 pass-rush grade in 2023, as he had nearly identical numbers the previous season in Minnesota, as well. The 31-year-old has posted back-to-back seasons with a pass-rush win rate above 18.0% after going through back surgery in 2021 missing all but one game that season.”

Then you can add Ogbo Okoronkwo and Alex Wright with the dynamic duo at the top and you get a ridiculously talented group of defensive ends. The Browns should be near the top in sacks and pressures again in 2024 under Jim Schwartz.

Browns DE Za’Darius Smith will look a bit different in 2024

The veteran defensive end makes a massive change.

The Cleveland Browns re-signed defensive end Za’Darius Smith this offseason, and when he puts the helmet back on as OTAs are getting set to begin, there will be something missing.

Showing off a new look on his Instagram, Smith did something drastic. He has had dreadlocks his entire NFL career, but they are no more as the veteran pass rusher has chopped off the locks and instead will put a clean cut on display this season.

In the video, it even looks like Smith is a bit stunned to see his locks laying on the table. But hey, maybe it will help him play faster!

This is going to take some time to get used to.

NFL Rumors: Za’Darius Smith returning to Browns on two-year deal

The Browns are on the board as Za’Darius Smith returns on a two-year deal

With NFL rumors flying all over the place, the Cleveland Browns are reportedly on the board. Welcome back, Za’Darius Smith!

According to Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz, the Browns have re-signed their starting defensive end to a two-year deal. The deal has a base of $11.75 million per year and can become worth a total of $25 million in total with incentives.

Smith was a key piece of the Cleveland defense, a unit that churned out top-of-the-league production during the 2023 season. All-in-all, Smith finished the season with 5.5 sacks and eight tackles for loss. He totaled a massive 61 pressures, for the Browns as well while playing opposite of NFL Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett.

This is the first move the Browns have made this free agency after trading for wide receiver Jerry Jeudy before the start of the legal tampering period. The Browns now keep intact their defensive end rotation of Garrett, Smith, Ogbo Okoronkwo, and Alex Wright.

6 Edge rushers Minnesota Vikings could target in free agency

With Danielle Hunter and Marcus Davenport set to hit the free agent market, the Minnesota Vikings need to fill those holes. Here are six options.

Defense was the name of the game for the Minnesota Vikings for much of the 2023 season. When Kirk Cousins went down mid-season and the offense sputtered, the defense was left to pick up the slack. And pick it up they did!

The 2023 Minnesota Vikings defense was a much-improved unit under the tutelage of former Miami Dolphins head coach and Pittsburgh Steelers defensive coordinator Brian Flores. Flores’ defensive scheme kept opposing offenses guessing all season, and the defense is the primary reason why the Vikings were (at least theoretically) still in the NFC playoff picture until the last two weeks of the season.

For better or worse, the Vikings have a lot of talent on the defense that is scheduled to hit the open market during the NFL’s free agency period this year. The biggest name is EDGE rusher Danielle Hunter, but there are a couple of key names – whether starters or depth pieces – with him that could leave.

Whether they leave or re-sign with the Vikings, Minnesota is going to have to be active in the NFL’s free agency period in some capacity to fill out the roster. A roster that could have several large holes, particularly at EDGE rusher. Here are six players who could help plug the hole at that position.

ESPN highlights a free agent pass rusher fit for the Saints

ESPN highlighted the best team fits for its top 50 free agent, linking the New Orleans Saints to pass rusher Za’Darius Smith:

We’re moving closer to free agency, and there’s a good chance the New Orleans Saints are going to make some moves to improve their team. ESPN has already shared their list of the top 50 free agents — now, ESPN staff writer Matt Bowen has linked each of those players with the best teams they could join in March.

And one name was highlighted for the Saints: Za’Darius Smith. Here’s why Bowen sees New Orleans as a good fit for him:

Given the Saints’ cap issues, this would probably be a one-year deal for Smith to play in Dennis Allen’s multiple defense. I like the fit here, though, given Smith’s pass rush versatility. Allen could deploy him off the edge or inside as a stand-up defensive tackle/nose. He’s a power rusher who has 60 sacks in his career (5½ with the Browns in 2023), and New Orleans finished tied for 28th in sacks last season with 34.

Smith has the size that the Saints covet off the edge, and he brings productivity that few players in their lineup can match — Pro Football Focus charting credited him with 61 and 80 quarterback pressures in his last two seasons on the Cleveland Browns and Minnesota Vikings. Before that, he was a two-time Pro Bowler with the Green Bay Packers and a big piece in the Baltimore Ravens’ rotation to start his career.

If the money checks out, he’d be a good get. But he shouldn’t be seen as the long-term fix at defensive end. Smith is an older player (he’ll be 32 when the season starts) and he would be joining an aging defense. Four of their top 11 defenders in snaps played are 30 or older, including Cameron Jordan, the second-oldest player on the team. Having two defensive ends on the wrong side of 30 and few young draft picks developing into known commodities behind them is worrisome.
