Lions check out draft sleeper RB, DBs at South Dakota State pro day

The Detroit Lions checked out a draft sleeper RB and a pair of very athletic DBs at South Dakota State pro day, with former Lions RB Zach Zenner in the house too

Pierre Strong put his name on the NFL draft map back at the scouting combine. The South Dakota State running back was the fastest RB in Indianapolis with a 4.37 40-yard dash.

Strong and his Jackrabbit teammates had their pro day last week, and the Detroit Lions were among the 20-something NFL teams in attendance in Brookings, South Dakota.

Strong is the headliner for the FCS program, but he’s not the only SDSU prospect who the Lions could have some interest in drafting or signing as a priority free agent. Safety Michael Griffin definitely grabbed attention with his workout. From Matt Zimmer of the Sioux Falls Argus Leader,

The 6-foot, 215-pound safety provided the first true ‘wow’ moment of the morning with a vertical leap that was so high it exceeded the limits of the measuring tool. When they extended the marker so Griffin could jump again, he reached a whopping 43.5 inches, drawing hoots and hollers from the players and coaches in attendance. His leap would have been the top jump at this year’s NFL Combine and among the top 10 in Combine history.

Later, Griffin ran a sub-4.5 40-yard dash (no official times were posted, every scout had their own stopwatch), and also impressed in the other skills.

Griffin doesn’t get projected as a draft pick often, but those athletic marks merit deeper attention. The same is true of CB Don Gardner, a physical 6-footer with impressive ball production and tackling skills. He turned in great games against Trey Lance and North Dakota State, as well as Northern Iowa,  a couple of seasons ago (the only times I’ve seen him).

Former Lions RB Zach Zenner was also there, though not representing the team. He’s now a player agent and returned to his alma mater to represent clients.

Dolphins make slew of roster moves ahead of Week 14

The Miami Dolphins have placed RB Kalen Ballage on injured reserve, cut S Montre Hartage and filed two waiver claims this week.

The Miami Dolphins are being forced to shuffle the deck once more due to injuries and performance on the field. Miami made two swaps of players on the 53-man roster yesterday, one on the heels of yet another injury and the other based on an early sample size for life in the NFL.

The Dolphins departing players are two youngsters — running back Kalen Ballage has been transitioned onto injured reserve after an injury suffered against the Eagles, while the Dolphins have cut UDFA rookie Montre Hartage after just one game on the active roster.

The Dolphins’ replacements include two fresh faces, there are no practice squad call-ups for the Dolphins in this round of changes. Miami has claimed running back Zach Zenner off of waivers via the Arizona Cardinals to take Ballage’s spot at the third active running back on the roster and Miami also tacked on WR Trevor Davis from waivers via the Oakland Raiders.

Davis is a former 5th-round draft selection by the Green Bay Packers and played his first three seasons in the NFL with the Packers before being cut by the Packers earlier this season.

For Miami, the absence of Ballage is the most notable shift on the roster, although rookie running backs Patrick Laird and Myles Gaskin appear ready to step in and split the bulk of the carries as the Dolphins look to find some stability in the running game. That stability won’t come until Miami gets some new bodies up front along the offensive line, but at the very least Laird and Gaskin have some more lateral agility than Ballage — that may help the team spring some bigger gains on the ground over the final 4 games of the season.

Tramaine Brock, Zach Zenner both get claimed by other teams

Zenner lands with the Dolphins and Brock is claimed by the Titans after both were waived by the Cardinals on Monday.

The Arizona Cardinals cut ties with a pair of players on Monday. They waived running back Zach Zenner and cornerback Tramaine Brock. Both have landed with other teams.

Zenner lands with the Miami Dolphins, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Miami placed running back Kalen Ballage on injured reserve. Zenner played in three games with the Cardinals but did not do much. He had three rushed for minus-two yards and one catch for 13 yards.

He was no longer needed because Kenyan Drake, acquired via trade from the Dolphins, David Johnson and Chase Edmonds are all now healthy. Zenner signed with the Cardinals in October.

Brock, who was a surprise cut by the Cardinals, lands with the Tennessee Titans. They claimed him off waivers, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garofolo.

Brock was the casualty on the defense after the Cardinals suffered a 34-7 loss. He was let go so the team could look at young players Chris Jones and Kevin Peterson.

Brock started six games while Patrick Peterson was suspended and then was the team’s third cornerback.

He now joins a team in the thick of the AFC playoff race.

The Arizona Cardinals are making moves after an embarrassing loss. After falling to the Los Angeles Rams 34-7 on Sunday, they are letting some players go. One is veteran cornerback Tramaine Brock.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, they are also releasing running back Zach Zenner.

Zenner was signed at the end of October after David Johnson got hurt. He was inactive the last two games.

With Kenyan Drake, Johnson and Chase Edmonds all healthy, Zenner’s roster spot could be better used with someone else at a different position.

The Cardinals will need to clear a spot on the roster for tackle Jordan Mills soon anyway. He has been designated to return from injured reserve and began practicing last week.

Zenner played in three games for the Cardinals. He ran the ball twice for negative-two yards. He also had one reception for 13 yards.
