Jets ‘not closing door’ on Zach Wilson playing Sunday

The Jets are not yet ruling out Zach Wilson for Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders.

Jets quarterback Zach Wilson is still in the concussion protocol as the team gets set to begin practice this week in preparation for Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders. However, the Jets aren’t ruling out him still playing Sunday.

“We’re not closing the door yet,” Saleh said about Wilson’s chances for Sunday. Saleh also said Monday Wilson could miss practice this week but still come back and play Sunday. Saleh said “everything” has improved with Wilson, who left Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins late in the second quarter with what was eventually ruled a concussion after initially being reported as dehydration and then a non-concussion head injury.

Saleh said Monday if Wilson can’t play Sunday, it will be Trevor Siemian starting. Siemian replaced Wilson against the Miami and went 14 of 26 for 110 yards with two interceptions. If and when Wilson returns from protocol, he will remain the starter for the remainder of the season.

Jets say Zach Wilson will remain starter if he clears concussion protocol

Zach Wilson will remain the Jets’ starting quarterback if and when he clears concussion protocol. That’s what head coach Robert Saleh said Monday.

Wilson left Sunday’s 30-0 loss to the Miami Dolphins with what was eventually ruled a concussion after initially being reported as dehydration and then a head injury that wasn’t a concussion. Wilson also went for X-rays as a precaution.

Saleh said Wilson “could definitely” go through the week without practicing and still start Sunday against the Washington Commanders. If Wilson can’t go, Trevor Siemian will start instead of Wilson. Siemian replaced Wilson at the end of the second quarter and went on to finish the game in Miami. Siemian was 14 of 26 for 110 yards with two interceptions. Wilson completed just 4 of 11 passes for 26 yards and was sacked four times.

Wilson was making his first start since Week 11. He was benched during the 32-6 loss to the Buffalo Bills and was demoted to the No. 3 quarterback for Weeks 12 and 13. After Tim Boyle’s struggles against the Dolphins and Atlanta Falcons, the Jets went back to Wilson for Week 14 against the Houston Texans. Wilson threw for 301 yards and two touchdowns in the 30-6 win.

Wilson’s future in New York is unclear. The Jets could trade the former No. 2 pick in the offseason as they look to give it one more true run with Aaron Rodgers in 2024. The question now is when Wilson will come back this season, if he does at all.

Jets won’t rush Zach Wilson back, will name starting QB on Wednesday

The Jets will take a cautious approach with Zach Wilson. Robert Saleh, meanwhile, will name a Week 10 starting QB on Wednesday.

Zach Wilson might have to wait another week to make his return to the field.

Wilson suffered a sprained PCL against the Patriots in Week 7 and was given a 2-4 week timetable to recover from the injury. The rookie quarterback is expected to practice this week and will start against the Bills if he’s fully healthy, but he still has hurdles still to clear before he gets the green light.

“If he’s fully healthy, for sure,” Robert Saleh said Monday of Wilson starting. “We’re not in any hurry to rush him back. If he’s not fully healthy, it would be irresponsible for us to throw him out there.”

The Jets’ Week 10 matchup with the Bills falls on the early side of Wilson’s return window. The Jets don’t have much of an incentive to rush him back under center, especially with Mike White shining in his place.

White threw for over 400 yards in a win over the Bengals in Week 8 and tossed a touchdown against the Colts on Thursday Night Football before departing with a minor right forearm injury.

“I just know as it goes from day-to-day and game-to-game, I just think it’s really cool that Mike was able to take advantage of this opportunity,” Saleh said.

Saleh expects Wilson, White and the rest of his quarterbacks to practice on Wednesday. A decision on who will start New York’s first meeting of the season with Buffalo will be made that day.

“We’re hoping, for sure, that Mike, Zach, Joe [Flacco], Josh [Johnson], all of them will be full participants,” Saleh said. “Again, as we get closer to Wednesday it’s looking like they will, but there’s a couple of hurdles they have to pass.”

Jets QB Mike White psyched for first NFL start: ‘That’s pretty freaking cool’

It will be the Mike White show when the Jets play the Bengals on Sunday, and he’s ready to roll in his first NFL start.

Good things come to those who wait, and boy has Mike White waited.

It took White four years to attempt his first professional pass, a milestone he checked off last Sunday when he relieved an injured Zach Wilson in the Jets’ loss to the Patriots. His NFL debut came under unfortunate circumstances, but White finally threw a meaningful pass for the first time since college and after six separate stints on New York’s practice squad since 2019.

Now he’s on the verge of checking another NFL first off his list.

White will be under center when the Jets take on the Bengals this weekend. The 26-year-old has the unenviable task of going up against a Cincinnati defense that is fresh off shutting down MVP candidate Lamar Jackson, but it is White’s show as Gang Green’s starting quarterback for at least one week.

“I’m starting an NFL game,” White said Thursday. “So that’s pretty freaking cool.”

White looked like a fish out of water at times in his professional debut, finishing 20-32 for 202 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions against New England. Being thrust into the duty in the middle of a game — especially when you have never done it during the regular season — is no easy task, though. White will now have a full four quarters and a week’s worth of preparation as the starter to show the kind of passer he really is.

White’s first week preparing as a starting quarterback has been a whirlwind. He said his phone has been blowing up since Robert Saleh announced Tuesday that he would be starting and he even got the chance to catch up with New York Mets infielder Luis Guillorme, as the two grew up in South Florida and played baseball together during their youth.

“There’s been a lot of ups and downs,” White said. “But I think, personally, I’m proud of how I handled it and persevered and kept continuing to work my tail off and get better and put myself into this situation.”

The fanfare is new for White, but football is still football. White and the Jets will look to hand the Bengals their third loss of the season, and he has been all-in on doing whatever it takes to make that happen.

“I’ve gone into this week and attacked this week and trying not to make it more than it is,” White said. “We’re going out there on Sunday and I’m going to try and help this football team win and do my job.”

5 takeaways from the Jets’ lifeless loss to the Patriots

Zach Wilson hurt his knee and the Jets allowed 31 first-half points. That and more takeaways from New York’s blowout loss to the Patriots.

The Jets did not get the memo that their bye week was over.

New York got off to its worst start of the season, which is saying something considering it has yet to score a single point in the first quarter. Yet the Jets allowed a Patriots offense that entered averaging 20.8 points per game to score 31 in the first half. That was more than enough for New England to complete the season sweep with a dominant 54-13 win.

Nothing went right for the Jets in Week 8. Robert Saleh’s team slept walk out of the gate after a week’s worth of talk about how they supposedly had a plan in place to avoid slow starts. Zach Wilson went down with a knee injury in the second quarter and did not return. That left Mike White to work under center in a game that was over shortly after the opening kickoff.

Here are five takeaways from New York’s latest embarrassing loss.

Jets vs. Patriots: Zach Wilson taken to locker room with injury

Mike White is in for Zach Wilson after Wilson suffered a knee injury against the Patriots.

Zach Wilson has suffered a knee injury in the second quarter of the Jets’ Week 7 matchup with the Patriots.

Wilson sustained the injury after being hit by Patriots edge rusher Matthew Judon following a pass attempt. Wilson’s leg was also rolled up on a previous hit by Patriots defensive lineman Lawrence Guy.

Wilson was able to walk off the field under his own power, but his status for the remainder of the afternoon is officially questionable after being taken to the locker room for further evaluation.

Mike White, who entered Sunday having never thrown a pass in the regular season, is under center for the Jets.
