Projected first-round pick Zach Edey is among the 20 players named to the Canadian men’s preliminary roster for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France.

Edey, who was born in Toronto, competed with the team in the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup. He was the lone collegiate player on the roster that featured seven NBA players, averaging 3.8 points and 1.4 rebounds in five appearances as Canada claimed the bronze medal.

The 7-footer said earlier this month, after working out with the Toronto Raptors, that he would be with the national team as it began training camp. He expects to be named to the final 12-man roster.

Edey led Purdue to the national championship game after averaging 25.2 points, 12.2 rebounds, 2.2 blocks and two assists on 62.3% shooting from the field. He became the first player in over 50 years to be named Player of the Year unanimously in consecutive seasons.

The 22-year-old is expected to attend a draft party on June 26 at Purdue with his former teammates, coaching staff and family. He will then join his countrymen for training camp June 28-July 7 at the University of Toronto and OVO Athletic Centre.

Canada will open the Olympics in Group A, along with Australia and two teams still to earn berths in qualifying tournaments. The group will play its first game on July 27 and face Australia on July 30 before wrapping up the group phase on Aug. 2.

The team is making its first appearance in the Olympics since 2000.

Projected first-rounder Zach Edey declines green room invite for draft party at Purdue

Player of the Year Zach Edey reportedly turned down an invitation to the 2024 NBA draft to watch the festivities at Purdue.

Player of the Year Zach Edey reportedly turned down an invitation to the 2024 NBA draft to watch the festivities at Purdue, according to Jonathan Givony of ESPN.

Edey was among 21 prospects invited to the green room on June 26-27 at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. He has opted to instead spend the evening surrounded by his former teammates, coaches and family in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Teams with first-round picks each year vote on the players they believe will be drafted early, typically the top 20-25 prospects. Last year, 25 prospects were invited to the green room and only one wasn’t selected in the first round (Rayan Rupert, 43rd overall pick).

Edey led the Boilermakers to the national title game after averaging 25.2 points, 12.2 rebounds, 2.2 blocks and two assists on 62.3% shooting from the field. He became the first player in over 50 years to be named Player of the Year unanimously in consecutive seasons.

The 7-footer leaves Purdue as the all-time career leader in points (2,516), rebounds (1,321), field goals (925) and field-goal percentage (62.1). He became the sixth player in history and the first since 1990 to finish with at least 2,516 points and 1,321 rebounds in a career.

Edey is projected to be a first-round pick, given his ability to dominate in the paint and protect the rim. He is one of the most accomplished college players in history and affected winning at a high level.

Purdue center Zach Edey discusses idea of playing for Chicago Bulls

Purdue center Zach Edey recently spoke about hte idea of playing for the Chicago Bulls.

As the offseason slowly approaches, the Chicago Bulls need to focus on improving their roster and planning for the future. They supposedly plan on trading Zach LaVine, and they also need to figure out DeMar DeRozan’s impending unrestricted free agency. But on top of all of that, they also need to nail their pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.

Chicago has the 11th pick in the draft, and they will have a chance to add some nice young talent to the roster next to Coby White and Ayo Dosunmu. If they can get the pick right, they could end up vastly raising their ceiling moving forward.

Purdue center Zach Edey, two-time Naismith Award winner, is widely projected to go later in the draft, but he recently responded to a question about potentially playing for the Bulls. He says he is open to the idea.

Nikola Vucevic is the starter in Chicago right now, but the Bulls could definitely use some depth at the center position.

Sixers coach Nick Nurse has strong praise for draft prospect Zach Edey

Philadelphia 76ers coach Nick Nurse has high praise for Purdue draft prospect Zach Edey.

The Philadelphia 76ers have the No. 16 pick in the upcoming 2024 NBA draft as they head into an important offseason. One has to wonder what the Sixers will do with that pick due to President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey’s tendency to trade picks for win-now players.

There is one intriguing prospect at No. 16 for Philadelphia: Purdue big man Zach Edey. He has been absolutely dominant at the collegiate level, averaging 25.2 points and 12.2 rebounds in the 2023-24 season on his way to winning AP Player of the Year for the second time in his career.

However, many wonder what he will do in the NBA. Edey is not the quickest player and one has to wonder if he will be able to keep up with some of the quicker players in the league.

Sixers coach Nick Nurse hopped on “The Herd” with Colin Cowherd and gave his thoughts on Edey as he reflected on his time coaching Team Canada:

I love him. He was 18 years old, and we were in our first training camp, and we needed some of our young kids there, and we had about four or five of them, and our guys didn’t know what to do with him. Couldn’t stop him. Forget this kid going to play in the under-18 world championship, let’s take him with our team. We didn’t do that that year, but I said, ‘Listen, this guy’s got to be part of our program.’ He’s certainly a problem. He’s super competitive. Really a super hard worker. He’s out there every day working. He’s out there every day playing. Like there’s a lot to like about this guy.

One has to wonder what Edey’s future is. Some have likened him to former Sixers big man Boban Marjanovic, but others believe he can be a star in this league. Maybe Nurse and the Sixers will give him a chance in Philadelphia.

The latest 2024 NBA mock draft from ESPN has the Heat taking Zach Edey

Is this really a good fit for the Purdue center?

The 2024 NBA Draft lottery is over, so it’s probably the official time to declare mock season fully open.

And we start with the question of where Purdue center Zach Edey could go. Mock drafts before the lottery had him either as a mid- or late-first rounder, and after the ping-pong balls landed, it seems about the same. In our latest NBA mock draft from Bryan Kalbrosky, he’s got Edey going No. 19 to the Toronto Raptors. And in the newest mock from ESPN.com, Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo have him going No. 15 to the Miami Heat, which is an interesting fit that they addressed.

Here’s what they said about the pick:

Edey’s positional fit alongside Bam Adebayo would be a topic of discussion in Miami, but his productivity, physicality, intensity and team-culture match would be welcomed by the Heat. Adebayo started to slowly incorporate a 3-point shot into his offensive arsenal late this season and has the type of defensive versatility that could be useful alongside another big. Edey’s offensive rebounding and interior scoring are skills the Heat lack, making him an attractive pick here.

There you have it! Make sure you check out the newest post-lottery mock draft from Bryan Kalbrosky!

Big Ten basketball boasts six invites to 2024 NBA draft combine.

Big Ten basketball boasts six invites to 2024 NBA draft combine.

The Big Ten conference produced six invitees for the 2024 NBA draft combine, set to take place from May 12-19.

Those players: Purdue’s Zach Edey, Minnesota’s Cam Christie, Indiana’s Kel’el Ware, Iowa’s Payton Sandfort and Illinois’ Coleman Hawkins and Terrance Shannon Jr.

Wisconsin unsurprisingly did not see any players invited. NBA hopefuls A.J. Storr and Chucky Hepburn elected to enter the transfer portal instead of testing the NBA waters.

Badgers fans hope some players earn future invitations, including rising star John Blackwell, top 2024 point guard Daniel Freitag and transfer forward Xavier Amos.

The invited athletes will perform several on-court skill drills and compete in games during the seven-day event before a crowd well-stocked with scouts and coaches. It will take place at the Wintrust Arena and the Marriott Marquis in Chicago, Illinois. Strength, power, speed, agility and body size are specifically measured in events such as the bench press, lane agility drills, vertical jump and reactive sprints.

Per the NBA’s collective bargaining agreement, all selected players are required to attend and engage in the draft combine.

From the 14 Big Ten teams in 2023-24, six athletes received invites.

From UCLA, USC, Oregon and Washington, the four Big Ten newcomers in 2024-25, four athletes received invites, including Bronny James.

Should the Chicago Bulls consider drafting Purdue center Zach Edey?

Is Purdue center Zach Edey a good 2024 NBA Draft target for the Chicago Bulls?

This offseason will be an important one for the Chicago Bulls as they try to reshape the roster. Trading Zach LaVine is reportedly still their top priority, but they should be trying to do anything they can to fix their future. Arturas Karnisovas has already admitted that their current core isn’t working, so a shake-up should be imminent.

While the trade market and free agency will be important for Chicago, the 2024 NBA Draft will also be a huge chance for them to add new talent. More specifically, it will give them an opportunity to add to their young core, which is now highlighted by point guard Coby White, who just finished second in Most Improved Player voting.

A recent mock draft had the Bulls picking Purdue big man Zach Edey, and the Bulls Digest YouTube channel discussed the idea in a video.

Adding Edey to the mix could be an intriguing idea, considering how unsure people are of what he will be at the NBA level. High-risk, high-reward?
