New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Sunday’s New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The New York Yankees (10-5) finish a four-game set against the Tampa Bay Rays (7-8) Sunday at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Fla. First pitch is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. ET. We analyze the Yankees-Rays betting odds and lines, with MLB picks and best bets.

Yankees at Rays: Projected starting pitchers

LHP James Paxton vs. RHP Charlie Morton

Paxton has been hit around to a 13.50 ERA through his first two starts, allowing six earned runs in just four innings pitched. He has five strikeouts and only one walk but has given up a total of 12 hits.

  • Paxton pitched to a 4.33 ERA away from Yankee Stadium last year compared to his 3.35 ERA in his home park.
  • He made two starts against the Rays in 2019 and went 0-1, yielding four earned runs over 12 total innings.

Morton owns a 5.52 ERA through three starts with nine earned runs allowed over 14 2/3 innings. He has 16 strikeouts against just two walks but has allowed three home runs.

  • Morton produced a sparkling 2.59 ERA across 17 starts and 104 1/3 innings in his home park last season.
  • He had a 3.80 ERA over four starts against the powerful Yankees last season and held them to a modest four home runs.

Prediction

Rays 6, Yankees 4

Moneyline (ML)

The RAYS (-110) took two of the first three in this series, winning 1-0 and 5-3 while losing the first half of Saturday’s doubleheader 8-4.

The likely absence of Stanton hurts the Yankees (+100) against one of the AL East’s top pitchers in Morton. New York will also need a longer outing than it has received thus far from Paxton after the bullpen work in Saturday’s two games.

The New York and Tampa Bay bullpens rank 10th and 11th in the majors by ERA this season, respectively, but Morton can be expected to pitch deeper into this game to help give his relievers a break.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Rays to win returns a profit of $9.09.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

Following the logic above, let’s take RAYS -1.5 (+180) on the alternate line to up our profit margin. The Yankees are 10-5 against the spread this year while the Rays are just 6-9, but I like Morton to limit damage via the long ball and keep the Yankees in the park, especially with Stanton out of the lineup.

Over/Under (O/U)

These two AL East rivals put up 12 and 8 runs in Saturday’s two seven-inning games. Take the OVER 8.5 (-110) as they return to the customary nine innings for the series finale.

The New York Yankees (9-4) and Tampa Bay Rays (6-7) will tangle in two games Saturday. Both games are slated as seven-inning affairs per MLB’s special rule in place for 2020. Yankees at Rays: Projected starting pitchers

RHP Gerrit Cole vs. RHP Tyler Glasnow

Cole owns a 2.55 ERA through three starts. He has logged a 3.21 mark over 195 career games.

  • Cole has filed a 41% strikeout rate against current Rays batters while holding them to a .635 OPS.
  • The new Yankees ace filed a sub-3.00 ERA on the road each of the last two seasons. He’s making his third career start at the Trop with a 1.50 ERA and 1.08 WHIP.

Glasnow posted a 12-start 1.78 ERA in 2019. The 26-year-old fire-baller has whiffed 14 batters in 8 2/3 innings this season and has an ERA of 3.12.

  • Glasnow has a short-but-effective history against New York batters. He’s held them to a .200/.259/.320 slash line.

Moneyline (ML)

The Yankees offense has disappeared the last couple of games. Philadelphia beat New York, 5-4, Thursday, and the Rays took Friday’s series opener, 1-0.

In the seven games prior to those back-to-back losses, the Bronx Bombers had averaged 7.0 runs per game on a .922 OPS.

Cole actually hasn’t pitched as well as his surface numbers would indicate, but the price is right for a New York bounce in Saturday’s opening game. TAKE THE YANKEES (-162).

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Yankees to win returns a profit of $6.17.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

Let’s avoid the run line  — YANKEES -1 (-125) — in this truncated tilt at the pitcher-friendly Trop.

Over/Under (O/U)

Cole has run into bats and barreled-up contact at below-par rates so far, and both bullpens are a tad overrated by their surface stats. Add in a brief team slump, and that makes for some value on the OVER 5.5 (-110). Keep in mind that low number is because of the seven-inning rule.

New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays odds, picks and best bets

Previewing Friday’s New York Yankees at Tampa Bay Rays sports betting odds and lines, with MLB betting picks, tips and best bets.

The New York Yankees (9-3) begin a three-game set with the Tampa Bay Rays (5-7) at 6:40 p.m. ET Friday evening at Tropicana Field. We analyze the Yankees-Rays betting odds and lines with MLB picks and best bets.

Yankees at Rays: Projected starting pitchers

RHP Masahiro Tanaka vs. LHP Blake Snell

Tanaka caught a Summer Camp liner off his head in July. He has since rehabbed and returned but is making just his second start of the campaign Friday. The 31-year-old has logged a 3.75 ERA over 165 career games. He clocked in with a 4.45 ERA on a diminished 7.4 K/9 in 2019.

  • Tanaka threw 51 pitches in his first game, so a likely scenario Friday has him handing the ball to the Yankee bullpen in the mid-innings. The right-hander exhibited an uptick in fastball velocity in his debut, and that’s something that bears watching over the next couple starts.
  • Tanaka owns a sub-3.00 over his last four starts at the Trop. Overall, he has held current Rays bats to a .243/.280/.419 slash line while posting a 6:1 K/BB ratio.

Snell has pitched five frames over two starts, notching a 5.40 ERA. The 2018 Cy Young winner posted a 4.29 ERA a year ago.

  • Yankees batters own a high-contact .837 OPS against Snell, who a year ago posted a 4.50 ERA in five starts against New York.
  • Snell owns a career ERA of 2.47 in his domed home yard in St. Petersburg.
  • He makes this start on six days’ rest. That’s an iffy interval over his career. Last season Snell logged a 6.98 ERA over five such games.

Moneyline (ML)

The Yankees outscored the Rays, 96-56, in taking 12 of 19 meetings a year ago. As team numbers go, New York is typically a bit more out over its skis and susceptible to being overbet., but that’s not the case here. The underlying matchup on the pitching side makes the YANKEES (-110) play one worth considering.

New to sports betting? A $10 bet on the Yankees to win returns a profit of $9.09.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

AVOID the juice-filled YANKEES -1 (+115) play.

Over/Under (O/U)

The Under is 6-1 in New York’s last seven totals set below 9.0 and 4-0 in the last four Tropicana games between the Yanks and Rays. Both bullpens are top-10 in terms of quality and depth.

The UNDER 8.5 (-110) has some value.
