The Houston Roughnecks will host the LA Wildcats in their 2020 XFL season opener Saturday at 5 p.m. ET on FOX. Below, we’ll preview the Roughnecks’ 2020 season, with a look at their roster and 2020 XFL Championship odds.

Head coach and general manager June Jones has been around, most recently serving as a coach with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the CFL, but also as the head coach of the Hawai’i Rainbow Warriors in college and the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL. Chris Miller will serve as the offensive coordinator, while Ted Cottrell will be the defensive coordinator.

Only the St. Louis Battlehawks +1000, and the Seattle Dragons +1100, have longer odds for the title.

Head coach and general manager Pep Hamilton, formerly an assistant at the University of Michigan, also worked with XFL Commissioner Oliver Luck’s son Andrew in Indianapolis in the NFL. Tanner Engstrand will serve in the dual role as offensive coordinator and running backs coach with former NFL players Bob Saunders in the role of receivers coach and Kurt Gouveia coaching the linebackers in the team’s initial campaign.

XFL fumbling timing of roster announcements

The XFL has decided to reveal the rosters for all 8 teams Monday, which is in the teeth of Super Bowl week festivities.

The XFL has carefully plotted its steps to avoid many of the missteps the league made in its first incarnation. That is why it is strange the league will be making its roster announcements right into the teeth of Super Bowl week.

The new league, which will kick off next month, announced Tuesday it will reveal the rosters for the eight teams on Jan. 27 at noon ET.

The focus of the football world will be elsewhere at that time, like Miami Gardens, (FL), where the San Francisco 49ers and Kansas City Chiefs will be preparing for Super Bowl Opening Night that evening and where virtually all the assembled football media will be.

Being  honest, the interest in roster reveales for XFL 2020 is minimal at best, but this timing will diminish that. It is stranger when you consider FOX’s Joel Klatt says the “talent in the league is unprecedented” on the network’s commercial for the XFL.
