Xavier at St. John’s odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s Xavier at St. John’s odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 25 Xavier Musketeers (10-3, 2-0 Big East) take on the St. John’s Red Storm (11-2, 1-1) Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET (FS1). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Xavier vs. St. John’s odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Rankings courtesy of the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll.

Xavier scores 83.8 points per game (14th nationally) and it can run it up on most teams. This game against St. John’s should be no different.

St. John’s has also started out well this season and its hopes for a March Madness bid after several seasons of slumps have relegated the Red Storm to an also-ran status in the Big East.

  • Against the spread (ATS): Xavier -1.5 (-115) | St. John’s +1.5 (-105)

Xavier at St. John’s picks and predictions

Prediction

St. John’s 87, Xavier 84

Moneyline

BET ST. JOHN’S (+110).

Both teams in this game can run up the score. Xavier is a good team, but its defense is questionable, and the Red Storm will be able to take advantage. With St. John’s having a home-court advantage, it should come out in this game and get a win to start the 2nd half of the season.

Against the spread

PASS.

St. John’s is the underdog and should win so making a wager on the moneyline is the way to go. This 1.5-point spread does not give you a lot of wiggle room, and the odds are better for the outright win.

Over/Under

BET OVER 162.5 (-115).

The teams will come out refreshed from a holiday break and ready to run the floor. With both teams able to score in bunches, I do not see a problem with this number being as high as it is. It will be a fun game to watch, and it should go over with fouls at the end of a close game. OVER 162.5 (-115) is my favorite play.

Xavier at St. John’s odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Wednesday’s Xavier at St. John’s odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Xavier Musketeers (17-11, 7-10 Big East) visit Carnesecca Arena to take on the St. John’s Red Storm (15-13, 7-10) Wednesday. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Xavier vs. St. John’s odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

The Musketeers were once widely thought of as an NCAA Tournament team but have lost four straight games, a streak that started with an 86-73 home loss to St. John’s despite being 6.5-point favorites.

Xavier has failed to cover four straight outings and is just 3-7 against the spread (ATS) over its last 10. It is 13-15 ATS on the season and 4-5 straight up (SU) on the road.

St. John’s is 11-7 SU at home. It has won just four of its last 10 games but has managed to cover the spread in seven of those affairs. The Red Storm are 14-14 ATS on the season.

They are led by standout G Julian Champagnie who is averaging 19 points per game. Champagnie dropped a game-high 27 points in the first meeting with Xavier.

Xavier at St. John’s odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

St. John’s 80, Xavier 75

Money line

PASS.

I’d rather take the points for the better value given I like St. John’s here.

Against the spread

BET on ST. JOHN’S -1.5 (-108).

There’s just no getting behind Xavier here. The Musketeers have lost four straight games.

They haven’t just lost conference games: they’ve failed to cover too. Xavier is the worst-covering Big East team in conference play at just 4-13 ATS. St. John’s sits in the middle of the pack at 9-7-1 ATS.

St. John’s is also playing much better as of late. It is 7-3 ATS while Xavier is just 3-7 ATS over the last 10 for each.

Considering Xavier didn’t have an answer for Champagnie at home, I doubt it will have one the road. Xavier is 4-5 ATS on the road and 4-5 ATS after a loss. Combine it all, and I’ll take the Red Storm to cover.

Over/Under

“LEAN” to the OVER 153.5 (-115).

While it’s understandable to be skeptical about a higher college basketball total, St. John’s is 16-12 O/U this season not because of its shooting but rather the pace it plays.

That should remain unchanged at home. St. John’s averages the fourth-most possessions per game in the nation. That will was imposed on Xavier the first time as the Red Storm scored 86.

Xavier is also averaging 73.1 points per game and should have its way with a weaker St. John’s defense, one that allows 74.4 points per game to its opponent.

Ultimately, the pace at which this game will be played should bode well for OVER 153.5 (-115).

The St. John’s Red Storm (13-8, 7-7 Big East) host the Xavier Musketeers (11-3, 4-3) for a Big East showdown at Carnesecca Arena Tuesday. Tip-off is set for 8:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Xavier-St. John’s college basketball odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Xavier at St. John’s: Odds, spread and lines

  • Money line: Xavier +105 (bet $100 to win $105) | St. John’s -125 (bet $125 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Xavier +1.5 (-110) | St. John’s -1.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 154.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Xavier at St. John’s: Three things to know

  1. Xavier lost its last game to UConn 80-72 Saturday following a two-week hiatus due to COVID-19 issues. The loss snapped a three-game winning streak for the Musketeers, which included a 69-61 win over the Johnnies Jan. 6; Xavier has played only four games since the beginning of 2021.
  2. St. John’s had a six-game winning streak ended by losing to Butler 76-73 in overtime as a 1-point road underdog last Tuesday. The Johnnies are being led by F Julian Champagnie, who’s the Big East’s leading scorer, and freshman PG Posh Alexander who leads the conference in steals per game.
  3. This has been a one-sided rivalry since Xavier joined the Big East in 2013 with Xavier winning 12 straight games and 14 out of 16 meetings. The Musketeers have a 7-2-1 ATS record vs. the Johnnies in their previous 10 head-to-head games.

Xavier at St. John’s: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

St. John’s 81, Xavier 76

Money line (ML)

My biggest takeaway upon seeing this line is how much BetMGM is goading bettors into backing Xavier in this spot. Just because the Johnnies were red-hot prior to losing to Butler doesn’t mean St. John’s should be favored, yet here we are.

The pro-St. John’s case is that it turned the corner defensively in recent weeks by winning the turnover battle 15.1-12.0 on average over the previous seven games and holding opponents to 29.6% 3-point shooting.

Also, the Johnnies had a higher effective field-goal percentage and lower turnover percentage in the first meeting between these teams but Xavier won because it had 19 more free-throw attempts.

That should regress more toward the mean in this game since Xavier ranks 259th in free-throw attempt rate. I’m going to follow the House’s read on this one and TAKE ST. JOHN’S (-125) to end its losing skid vs. Xavier.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

PASS because the money line is only slightly more expensive for St. John’s. There’s no reason to fuss with the points in this game.

Over/Under (O/U)

lean OVER 154.5 (-110) for a tiny wager since the sharp side of the market is on the Over and the Over has cashed in seven of the last eight games in which the Johnnies were favored.

Xavier has the third-highest effective field-goal shooting in the Big East and St. John’s will have success turning its defense into offense.
