Though most of the participants in the Kansas City Chiefs rookie minicamp were first-year players, veteran tryout Wyatt Hubert was one of the few outliers. His journey to the event started back in February when he announced his return to football after previously retiring in 2021 after spending a season with the Cincinnati Bengals following a seventh-round selection in 2021.

The former K-State wildcat and Topeka, Kansas native felt immense pride to wear the logo of his childhood team as he pursued an opportunity to play professional football again.

“Yeah, it’s crazy,” Hubert said. “You know wearing an Arrowhead on my chest is definitely special. It’s like wearing a Wildcat on my chest, too. So, it’s crazy. (I’m) definitely thankful to be here.”

Hubert told reporters about his decision to get back on the field during media availability on the last day of camp and made it clear that he wants to make the most of his athletic prime while he still can.

“Last season I was retired. I wasn’t playing football,” He explained. “I was working a regular job (and) living a regular life. And I worked probably five to six months. About the last two months I started to think back, it was really hard to watch football games just knowing my close friends that are on teams who are playing and me just watching a game kind of knowing that I could do that too.

“So, I definitely just thought about my decision. I definitely went back and forth with it a lot. It was a tough decision, but I decided this is such a short window in my life, why not take advantage of the opportunity and just give it my all.”

Though Hubert may be a long shot to make the Chiefs’ roster as rookie minicamp tryout, his enthusiasm for the game of football and desire to make it in one of the most competitive sports leagues in the world is admirable. He’s continued to put in the work despite working in medical sales while away from the game over the last season.

“I never stopped working out,” Hubert said. “I always – even though I wasn’t playing football I always treated myself like an athlete, in the weight room, with my diet, everything I did. I still took all that very seriously every single day. So, that definitely helped my transition back into football a lot.”

If he can continue to show he’s progress and want-to this offseason, Hubert may complete a comeback for the ages and find himself back in the saddle with a contract to play for an NFL team during the 2023 season.

Former Bengals draft pick Wyatt Hubert comes out of retirement

A former Bengals draft pick plans his return to football.

Former Cincinnati Bengals seventh-round pick Wyatt Hubert has announced he’s returning to football after a brief retirement.

Hubert, selected late by the Bengals in 2021 out of Kansas State, missed all of his rookie season due to a torn pec.

At the time of his retirement, Hubert had cited his health for the reasoning. Now at 24 years old, he announced the following on social media: “I Have decided to come out of retirement after being retired since August of 2022.”

At the time of his retirement, Hubert had had a shot at the final roster in Cincinnati due to the need for pass-rushing depth.

The Bengals terminated Hubert’s contract, according to the league’s transaction wire issued on Wednesday.

Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Wyatt Hubert announced his retirement from football as he heads into his second pro season.

Hubert, a seventh-round pick out of Kansas State in 2021, missed his entire rookie season due to a pec injury and was on the mend this summer before making the announcement.

The social media message shared by Hubert the day after Cincinnati’s preseason-opening loss against the Arizona Cardinals detailed Hubert’s physical health as the main reason for his stepping away from the game.

Hubert had a shot at making the final roster in 2022 given a quality pass-rush was one of the team’s major needs this offseason but he’s admirably stepped back and prioritized things.

Bengals showing pre-draft interest in Kansas State DE Wyatt Hubert

The Cincinnati Bengals are showing interest in a certain defensive prospect ahead of the draft.

The Cincinnati Bengals are starting to get incredibly busy ahead of the 2021 NFL draft.

While the front office focuses on free agency, team personnel have been all over the place, including recently attending the Oklahoma pro day for key prospects.

Elsewhere, the Bengals dialed in on another interesting draft target — Kansas State edge defender Wyatt Hubert. According to Kellis Robinett of the Wichita Eagle, Cincinnati reps were at his pro day and talked to him after it concluded.

Hubert looks like a standard versatile piece for a multiple defense like Lou Anarumo runs. He made most of his headway while standing up as a pass-rusher in the college, tallying 20 sacks over three seasons.

He’s impressing plenty, to say the least:

The Bengals don’t really shy away from guys they end up drafting, so Hubert is one to keep an eye out for in the mid-rounds as they look to bolster the pass-rush.

Chiefs engaged in pre-draft conversations with Kansas State EDGE Wyatt Hubert

The Chiefs are showing interest in draft prospects with local ties.

The Kansas City Chiefs continue to meet with prospects virtually ahead of the 2021 NFL draft, this time showing what appears to be significant interest in a prospect with ties to the area.

Kansas State EDGE Wyatt Hubert grew up just outside of Topeka, Kansas.  He had his Pro Day on Tuesday, for which a Chiefs scout was present. He put up an impressive performance, running an eye-popping 7-second three-cone. For an athlete that measured at 6-2 and 265 pounds, that number is exceptional. He also recorded a 31-inch vertical jump and believes that he had a good on-field workout for scouts.

Following his Pro Day, Hubert met with the media and revealed that he’d already had multiple pre-draft conversations with Kansas City. He even has another visit with the Chiefs scheduled for Friday. He seemed pretty excited about the prospect of playing for Kansas City and learning from Chiefs DE Frank Clark.

Hubert is certainly an intriguing prospect in this class, some even think he’s among one of the more underrated edge rushers. He has the versatility to play in a 4-3 scheme with his hand in the dirt or play as a stand-up 3-4 outside linebacker. Teams are going to have some concerns about his arm length as he measured in with just 30-inch arms at the Senior Bowl. The arm length didn’t seem to limit him during the week of practice at the All-Star game, though.

In 2020, Hubert appeared in 10 games for the Wildcats, recording 27 total tackles, 13 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, a pass defended and a blocked kick. Those were career highs for tackles for loss and sacks during an abbreviated season. He was also the only player in the conference to receive a unanimous First-Team All-Big 12 selection on defense.

Hubert has the makings of a sub-package rusher at the next level, at least initially, but there’s potential for more here. He’s very assignment sound when asked to contain and play the run. He gives relentless effort on every snap and he’s good at establishing a plan of attack against his opponents.

If the interest here is genuine, look for Hubert to be an option for the Chiefs on Day 2.
