Opening Bell: WWE, AEW previews for the week of 5/30

Get ready for Raw, SmackDown, Dynamite and Rampage with WWE and AEW previews for episodes airing the week of May 30, 2022.

Welcome to the Opening Bell, where we round up what’s been announced for WWE (Raw and SmackDown) and AEW (Dynamite and Rampage) programming for the week ahead.

WWE Raw preview – Monday, May 30, Wells Fargo Arena, Des Moines, IA

Cody Rhodes was just trying to have a normal, competitive match with The Miz when it was unceremoniously ended thanks to an ambush by Seth “Freakin'” Rollins. He’s not going to let that go without addressing it, which he’ll do this week on Raw. When? The Cody Clock will probably let us know on Monday night.

There’s also a contract signing set to take place. Bobby Lashley lost his match with MVP a week ago, meaning his former manager got to pick the stipulation for a third bout with Omos at Hell in a Cell. MVP chose a Handicap Match, so all three men will have to sign on the dotted line this week.

Also on tap for Raw:

AEW Dynamite preview – Wednesday, June 1, Kia Forum, Los Angeles

Double or Nothing was a entertaining but lengthy affair, so it’s good that AEW has some time to catch its breath … but not too long, as the company is set for the first live wrestling event at the Kia Forum since 2015. So far, just one match has been confirmed for L.A., but it’s a big one: Jungle Boy, Luchasaurus and Christian Cage (who still hasn’t turned heel) will join forces with The Hardys in a 10-man tag team match against the Undisputed Elite (Adam Cole, Kyle O’Reilly, Bobby Fish and Young Bucks).

It would be a surprise if we didn’t hear from new AEW World Champion CM Punk, who needs his first challenger. And we may or may not hear from MJF because … well, you know.

WWE SmackDown preview – Friday, June 3, The Schottenstein Center, Columbus, OH

WWE hasn’t confirmed any matches yet for SmackDown in Columbus, but the venue has been advertising Drew McIntyre, Ronda Rousey, the New Day and The Usos. All of them make sense to appear.

On top of that, The Schottenstein Center is also saying AJ Styles will face The Miz, though that could be a dark match, for sure.

AEW Rampage preview – Friday, June 3, Toyota Arena, Ontario, CA

Last but not least (unless Rampage gets moved up again for the NHL playoffs, in which case SmackDown will air last), Rampage rolls into Ontario (not the Canadian one) to close out the week in televised Big 2 wrestling. Toyota Arena is promoting this as a homecoming for the Young Bucks, so they should be involved in some capacity.

As well, at Double or Nothing, Scorpio Sky promised Dante Martin he could have a shot at the TNT Championship, and given Rampage is on TNT, this feels like the proper place for that bout. Expect it to be officially confirmed during Dynamite.

WWE SmackDown results: New Day mystery partner, Ronda-Raquel II

Check out WWE SmackDown results for the May 27, 2022 episode from North Little Rock, Arkansas.

It’s a bit of a new day for the New Day tonight on WWE SmackDown from North Little Rock, Arkansas.

The one-time trio has been a duo for a while now, which is fine except that they’ve had ongoing issues with the Brawling Brutes … and there are three of them. Tired of being outnumbered Xavier Woods promised the New Day would have a mystery partner for a six-man tag match, so it’ll be interesting to see who walks down the ramp.

Elsewhere, Raquel Rodriguez made quite the impression when she pushed WWE SmackDown women’s champion Ronda Rousey to the limit. So WWE decided the best way to capitalize would be to run it back. Color us skeptical, but it should be a good match regardless.

And perhaps teasing the rumored end of the brand split, Kevin Owens will appear on SmackDown with a special episode of the KO Show. Undoubtedly, Ezekiel is still on Owen’s mind, as he remains determined to prove that Elias’ younger brother is really Elias.

Now is the perfect time to end the WWE brand split

WWE has treated Raw and SmackDown as separate entities for most of the last 20 years, but should consider ending the brand split right now.

Speculation about whether WWE will end its brand split, with different talent appearing on Raw and SmackDown, is like discussion of the weather. It’s constant, everyone has at least some opinion on it, and there’s always a bit of uncertainty involved.

The current moment in time is no different. Bryan Alvarez of Wrestling Observer Live (h/t to Aidan Gibbons of Cultaholic for the transcription) recently reported that the brand split is “essentially done” and that while he didn’t expect an official announcement to be imminent, “They’re just going to do whatever.”

Raw and SmackDown have been separate brands more often then not for the past 20 years (meaning it’s been on except for a time between 2011 and 2016). The split was initially conceived as a way to produce both variation, a sense of distinct identity for WWE’s two weekly shows, and as a way to manufacture some sense of competition that was lost when WCW went down the drain and was acquired by WWE.

The degree to which WWE has stuck to the idea of its shows as completely separate entities has varied over the years. At its height, the split led to things like brand-specific pay-per-views, which maximized the company’s product while watering the shows down quite a bit — and to be fair, the biggest events still featured performers from both brands.

Most of the time, however, WWE has treated the separation of the red and blue shows like Doctor Who treats the rules of time travel: It stuck to the split most of the time, but ignored it when creatively convenient to do so.

That could certainly be the case again here, but if WWE wants to call a more formal end to the brand split, there couldn’t be a more perfect time than right now.

It starts with the most obvious facts. Both of the most important men’s titles on each show, the WWE Championship (for Raw) and WWE Universal Championship (for SmackDown), are in the hands of the same Superstar, Roman Reigns. The same is true for both sets of men’s tag team titles, recently unified by The Usos, albeit with a huge assist from Reigns.

WWE hasn’t shown any signs of having Reigns defend his championships separately, and it would be silly for the Usos to do it so soon after unifying theirs. That means the Bloodline is inherently going to float between shows for the foreseeable future.

The women’s tag team titles have always been a cross-brand affair, the exception to the rest of the company’s championships. They’re currently vacant thanks to an incident you may have heard about, but WWE is planning a tournament to find new titleholders soon. Once they’re crowned, they’ll likely be regulars (or not, considering how little WWE seems invested in that championship) on Raw and SmackDown.

[lawrence-related id=2135]

Having those champs appear on Mondays and Fridays has ripple effects on the rest of the roster. If Riddle is the next man up to challenge Reigns, as appears to be the case, it doesn’t make sense to restrict him to a single show. The same goes for the Street Profits or whoever ends up as the No. 1 contenders to the Usos.

There are also more subtle signs that the split is dissolving that aren’t related to any titles. The returning Lacey Evans has had her story told on both Raw and SmackDown, which could signal that WWE isn’t sure where she fits best, or that she could appear on both of them. If the latter is the plan for Evans, it could be the same for more Superstars who are returning or repackaged.

The complicating factor is that Fox has reportedly asked for exclusive talent for SmackDown, which is its right to request as a broadcast partner. Still, it’s hard to imagine that WWE can’t make a powerful argument that having the biggest names appear on Friday nights, or even up and comers like Theory, wouldn’t benefit SmackDown — adding more than a lack of exclusivity takes away.

On top of all of these considerations is the fact that because of roster cuts and departures, the WWE’s overall talent cupboard simply isn’t bursting at the seams as it once was. The leadership appears to recognize it with moves like unifying the titles and streamlining the overall number of storylines it has in play.

The most likely outcome is that WWE won’t formally end the brand split and will continue doing what it’s done for most of the last two decades, which is to pay lip service to it while ignoring it as needed. But if there were ever a time to take the next step and officially dispense with it, this is it.

Opening Bell: AEW hits Vegas, Cody Rhodes in the spotlight on Raw

Get ready for the week of May 23 in WWE and AEW with previews for Raw, SmackDown, Dynamite and Rampage.

Welcome to the Opening Bell, where we round up what’s been announced for WWE (Raw and SmackDown) and AEW (Dynamite and Rampage) programming for the week ahead.

WWE Raw preview – Ford Center, Evansville, IN

There’s a big confrontation being advertised for this week’s Raw, and by that we mean large in terms of how it’s being positioned and the physical size of the men involved. Bobby Lashley, who managed to beat Omos in a Steel Cage match even though he was thrown through the cage, has another challenge for the Nigerian Giant that he’ll apparently lay out Monday night.

And Cody Rhodes, who is increasingly being shown off as one of WWE’s biggest fan favorites, will be in action as well, taking on The Miz. But the real question is whether there will be another “Countdown to Cody” timer.

Also on tap for this week:

AEW Dynamite preview – Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, Las Vegas

There could be worse things than being in Las Vegas all week for a full week of AEW leading up to Double or Nothing on Sunday night. The slate begins with Dynamite on Wednesday, and even with the pay-per-view just days away, the card is pretty loaded. It’s headlined by a Steel Cage match between Wardlow and Shawn Spears, which the big man must win if he wants to get his hands on MJF (spoiler: he does want that, very much).

From a pure in-ring action standpoint, the bout of the night could (should be?) the Jungle Boy vs. Swerve Strickland vs. Ricky Starks three-way dance. Hard to imagine that one won’t be a lot of fun.

Also announce by AEW for this week’s Dynamite:

AEW Rampage preview – Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, Las Vegas

When will AEW Rampage air this week? It’s an open question as of the time of this post, due to the uncertainty of the NBA and NHL playoff schedules and what time games might air on TNT. It’s possible it could be headed for the 5:30 p.m. ET/2:30 p.m. PT time slot that got the show its lowest ratings ever a few weeks ago.

Be that as it may, Rampage is set to be live this week as part of the full Las Vegas AEW experience, and we’ll update with more on the matches as they are announced.

WWE SmackDown preview – Simmons Bank Arena, North Little Rock, AR

Though it feels like the New Day has been feuding forever with the group now officially know as the Brawling Brutes, it was only this past week that Xavier Woods said out loud what we all knew: his side is outnumbered.

That being the case, he and Kofi Kingston are recruiting a mystery partner to their cause for a six-man tag team match this Friday. Who will it be, and can Woods pull off the Backwoods in a bout with so many people in it? We’ll find out on SmackDown.

WWE SmackDown results: RK-Bro, Usos meet for all the tag team gold

Check out WWE SmackDown results for the May 20, 2022 episode from Grand Rapids, with the tag team title unification match.

After weeks of singles matches, challenges, dueling promos and making up two-thirds of the main event at WrestleMania Backlash, it’s finally time to decide who will hold all of WWE’s men’s tag team titles. RK-Bro and the Usos meet tonight on WWE SmackDown in Grand Rapids to unify the championships, presuming there’s no funny business.

(And that can’t be ruled out, though this has been promoted long and hard enough it would be somewhat surprising if it didn’t really go down.)

WWE has also promised that Shinsuke Nakamura will take the next step in his efforts to overthrow the self-appointed locker room leader, Sami Zayn. And Xavier Woods will meet Butch, the latest in a feud between New Day and the fight night fellows that may be starting to wear a little thin.

Check out full WWE SmackDown results updated here live as they happen tonight from the Van Andel Arena. We’ll have bullet points to give you just the basics, or you can scroll down further to get more details on every match and big segment.

Opening Bell: Steel cage match on Raw, jokers revealed on Dynamite

Get ready for the week in WWE and AEW with previews for Raw, SmackDown, Dynamite and Rampage.

Welcome to the Opening Bell, where we round up what’s been announced for WWE (Raw and SmackDown) and AEW (Dynamite and Rampage) programming for the week ahead.

WWE Raw preview – Norfolk Scope Arena, Norfolk, Va. (live)

With Bobby Lashley and Omos tied at one win apiece in their feud, it’s time for the two powerhouses to settle things inside a steel cage.

If Lashley loses, he can’t complain since it was his idea to lay out this particular challenge last Monday. The idea, of course, is that MVP can’t interfere, something that directly contributed to Omos’ win at WrestleMania Backlash. But this particular storyline feels like one that might continue into Hell in a Cell, so don’t be shocked if there’s no definitive winner Monday night even though the stipulation suggests there should be.

AEW Dynamite preview – Fertitta Center, Houston (live)

AEW is billing this week’s Dynamite as “Wild Card Wednesday,” which fits their gambling-related theming for the upcoming Double or Nothing PPV, but is also a reference to the jokers being revealed for both Owen Hart Foundation tournaments. Whoever the mystery wrestlers are, they’ll have their hands full in quarterfinal matchups with Samoa Joe and Dr. Britt Baker.

[lawrence-related id=862]

Also on tap for this week’s Dynamite:

AEW Rampage preview – Fertitta Center, Houston (taped)

The most interesting question for Rampage each week at this point is when it will air on TNT thanks to NBA and NH playoff games. The answer for this Friday, May 20 is 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT.

As for the card, the one match we know for sure is going down is an Owen Hart Foundation women’s quarterfinal between Red Velvet and Kris Statlander. Statlander is taking the place of Velvet’s originally announced opponent, Hikaru Shida.

WWE SmackDown preview – Van Andel Arena, Grand Rapids, Mich. (live)

This is it, finally. The tag team titles have been teased for a unification match since prior to WrestleMania Backlash, with The Usos trying to fulfill a directive from Roman Reigns to obtain both sets of titles and RK-Bro understandably figuring it would be cool to grab them for themselves.

This Friday, the two teams will settle things once and for all to decide which tag team reigns supreme. Probably. If Reigns doesn’t interfere, and the Street Profits, who have been on the periphery of this story throughout, don’t decide to do something. Just saying, Hell in a Cell isn’t that far away …

WWE SmackDown live results: Women’s tag team titles on the line

Check out live WWE SmackDown results updated as they happen for the May 13, 2022 episode from the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre.

After some one-on-one matches the last few weeks, the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship will finally be defended tonight as SmackDown rolls into Wilkes-Barre, Penn. Naomi and Sasha Banks have been on quite the roll, but Shayna Baszler and Natalya believe they’ve got what it takes to end it.

(Then again, don’t No. 1 contenders always feel that way?)

We’re also expecting an appearance from WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey on this broadcast, and with Charlotte Flair out of action indefinitely, we could learn who her next rival will be.

And RK-Bro promised to show up on SmackDown and demand the tag team title unification bout that got shoved to the side in the final build-up to WrestleMania Backlash. We’re assuming they meant what they said.

Follow along with live WWE SmackDown results as they happen tonight, in quick bullet points right below and more detailed form if you keep scrolling down.

Opening Bell: WrestleMania Backlash … er, backlash, Owen Hart tourneys kick off

Check out previews for Raw, SmackDown, Dynamite and Rampage, including the fallout from WrestleMania Backlash and the kickoff of the Owen Hart Foundation tournaments.

Welcome to the Opening Bell, where we round up what’s been announced for WWE (Raw and SmackDown) and AEW (Dynamite and Rampage) programming for the week ahead.

WWE Raw – XL Center, Hartford, CT (live)

WWE hasn’t released its official Raw preview yet, perhaps allowing WrestleMania Backlash to soak in just a bit more. But the fallout from the event should be front and center, particularly what’s next for the Raw Tag Team Champions, RK-Bro. Is a tag team unification bout still on the horizon?

Seth Rollins won’t be happy following his second straight loss to Cody Rhodes, particularly the way it came about. The Visionary should have something to say about that Monday night, and could give us a hint as to whether he’s seeking a third match with Rhodes or moving on to something else.

And plenty of recent Raw storylines didn’t play a part in Backlash, so those are worth watching for as well. Particularly intriguing is the Kevin Owens situation, as he continues to turn what would otherwise be just another midcard subplot into gold with his quest to prove Ezekiel isn’t who he claims to be.

AEW Dynamite – UBS Arena, Long Island (live)

The Owen Hart Foundation tournaments get underway this Wednesday on TBS. The men’s tourney will see Darby Allin take on Jeff Hardy, as well as Dax Harwood vs. Adam Cole, while the women’s tourney features Jamie Hayter vs. Toni Storm. And since the “Most Magical Place in the World” is his hometown, MJF is sure to have something special cooked up for his contract signing with Wardlow.

Also announced for Dynamite this week:

WWE SmackDown – Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza, Wilkes Barre, PA (live)

The big match announced for SmackDown this week is one that fans may have rightfully expected to see at WrestleMania Backlash: the Women’s Tag Team Championship match. Sasha Banks and Naomi will look to retain their titles as they face Shayna Baszler and Natalya.

AEW Rampage – UBS Arena, Long Island (taped)

There’s a title on the line this week on Rampage, as Scorpio Sky lived up to his promise to give former SCU teammate Frankie Kazarian the first crack at his TNT Championship.

Also revealed for this Friday:

  • Ruby Soho battles Riho in another Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament quarterfinal bout

Rob Gronkowski to appear on March 20 SmackDown, Vegas lists odds for his first opponent

Rob Gronkowski isn’t officially signed with WWE, but the former Patriots great will be on the March 20 edition of SmackDown.

On one of the more surreal nights in WWE history Friday, there was some “real” news out of SmackDown.

The show was broadcast on FOX in its usual time slot. What was atypical was the matches took place before an empty WWE Performance Center in Orlando, FL, necessitated by the coronavirus pandemic.

So, WWE’s Superstars went through their matches and promos for two hours as if nothing was missing despite the absence of the WWE Universe for a card slated to be held in Detroit.

The news that came out of the show is former New England Patriots star tight end Rob Gronkowski will appear on the March 20 edition of the show. It is scheduled for New Orleans, however, it could also take place in the Performance Center if bans are not lifted.

Gronk’s friend Mojo Rawley made the announcement, though he would not go as far as saying Gronk had signed with WWE. Rawley said, “The rumors are true and Rob Gronkowski will be in the house next Friday. Get hyped, baby.”

The news caught the eyes and ears of one of the nation’s top NFL insiders.

Meanwhile, Vegas is getting on-board with the Gronk-WWE train, listing odds on who could be the FOX football analyst’s first opponent.

Watch the surreal opening to WWE SmackDown from an empty makeshift arena

WWE staged SmackDown with zero fans in attendance on Friday night.

Nearly every major sports league in the United States has suspended play due to the coronavirus crisis – from the NBA to the NHL to MLS to NASCAR – but WWE elected to move Friday’s episode of SmackDown from Little Caesars Arena in Detroit to the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, making for a surreal broadcast.

The Performance Center was transformed to look like a miniature WWE arena, complete with video screens, an entrance ramp, announce table and (empty) seats. In the show open, the return of WWE legend Jeff Hardy was announced, along with an appearance by John Cena. With just a few weeks until WrestleMania 36 is scheduled to take place in Tampa, WWE made every attempt to continue business as usual.

Sasha Banks and Bayley were the first WWE stars to appear, and they made an typical entrance despite the circumstances, gesturing to a non-existent audience.

WWE announced on Friday that the upcoming episode of Raw on “3/16 day,” which is scheduled to feature the return of Stone Cold Steve Austin, will also take place in the Performance Center.

WWE will undoubtedly face criticism for staging any event, even one as small as SmackDown from the Performance Center, but many fans enjoyed the diversion. https://twitter.com/JoeydellW/status/1238619114974912514
