WrestleMania is the biggest event of any calendar year for WWE, but the Royal Rumble has grown to the point where it has surpassed SummerSlam to take second place. Not only is there an inherent magic in the namesake match — which has expanded since 2018 to include both men’s and women’s versions — but the high stakes and proximity to Mania make it a can’t-miss spectacle.

It should be no surprise, then, that the event has grown to become a stadium show WWE feels comfortable hosting in a baseball or football venue. That’s the case again this year, as Tropicana Field, home of the MLB Tampa Bay Rays, will be the host facility.

Most Royal Rumble cards only have a handful of bouts since the Rumble matches take so long to play out, and that’s expected to be the case in St. Petersburg as well. At the time of this post, there are the Men’s and Women’s Royal Rumble matches plus two championship tilts: Roman Reigns in a Fatal Four-Way match against AJ Styles, LA Knight and Randy Orton, and Logan Paul defending his United States Championship against Kevin Owens.

When can you tune in to Peacock and watch all this go down? Here’s when you’ll want to be ready to Rumble.

WWE Royal Rumble 2024

  • Location: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, Fla.
  • Date: Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024
  • Start time: 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT

Note that at the current time, there’s no indication there will be any pre-show matches, so you’ll be fine to jump on the Peacock app right before showtime and won’t have to worry about missing anything.

Matt Riddle suggests Brock Lesnar said he was winning 2022 Royal Rumble and ‘nobody stood up to him’

If Brock Lesnar decides he’s winning the WWE Royal Rumble, is it possible no one tells him no?

The bygone days of pro wrestling are full of tales of wrestlers throwing their star power around to get creative changed in their favor. We’re talking the “that doesn’t work for me, brother” Hulk Hogan type stuff. Not so much in more recent times, but Matt Riddle wants us to believe it took place in WWE just two years ago and changed the finish to the 2022 Royal Rumble.

Riddle’s time with WWE is now over thanks to his September 2023 release, and he’s already popped up in MLW and NJPW. Perhaps that’s why he’s been willing to talk about things that happened while he was there, and his most talked about claim to date has to do with Brock Lesnar.

During a virtual signing session this week with Signed by Superstars, Riddle claimed he was told he’d be winning the Men’s Royal Rumble match two years ago, but Lesnar decided he was going to win and no one decided to argue the point with the Beast Incarnate (h/t Wrestling Observer for the transcription).

So, I believe … you know, it’s sports entertainment. But I was told at one point I was going to win the Rumble and everything else. And then what was it? Bobby Lashley beat Brock Lesnar because somebody came in and hit him with the belt or what have you. Then Brock came in, didn’t want to do business with everybody, said he was winning (The Royal Rumble), and then he won. None of the producers, nobody stood up to him and they let him do it. I didn’t either.

Was WWE planning on having Riddle win the Rumble? Insiders are split on that. PWI’s Mike Johnson reported at the time that it was the plan but things changed several times and landed on eventually landed on Lesnar.

Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer isn’t as sure, as he explained on Wrestling Observer Radio.

I never heard that one before and it doesn’t really make sense for him to win the Rumble because then he would have to be in the main event at Mania and they were never pushing him at that level.

The people who would know for sure, like Vince McMahon and Triple H, aren’t likely to discuss this topic any time soon. But whether Riddle is on target here or not, this feels like a story that will live on, just because fans will believe that Lesnar really could have said “nope, sorry, I’m winning the Rumble” and nobody felt like telling him no.

WWE Royal Rumble 2024 card: Roman Reigns to defend title in Fatal 4-Way match

A look at all the announced matches for the 2024 WWE Royal Rumble premium live event.

WWE’s most important season of the year, the road to WrestleMania 40 in Philadelphia, has begun with the end of the holidays. Star-studded matches will dominate The Grandest Stage of Them All as the biggest storylines are being set up over the ensuing months.

The road starts with the Royal Rumble premium live event, taking place at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. Featuring the Men’s and Women’s Royal Rumble matches, as talent battles to participate in main event-worthy championship matches at WrestleMania and create their own moment in this event’s illustrious history.

Rhea Ripley won the 2023 Women’s Royal Rumble match and took home the SmackDown Women’s Championship (now the Women’s World Championship) from Charlotte Flair at WrestleMania. Ever since, the Eradicator has held the title, so if she enters WrestleMania 40 with the belt, she will aim to complete a full calendar year of premium live events as the titleholder.

Cody Rhodes won the Men’s Royal Rumble last January, and he challenged Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at WrestleMania 39. However, he lost to Reigns and has not received another title opportunity since.

Despite this, Rhodes has entered the 2024 Royal Rumble for another chance at the championship, potentially against either Reigns or Seth Rollins for the World Heavyweight Championship, but odds are that if he wins, fans will see the long-awaited rematch against the Tribal Chief himself.

Those matches aside, two title bouts have been set for Royal Rumble.

AJ Styles, Randy Orton and LA Knight battled in a No. 1 Contenders match to face Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship on the Jan. 5 episode of SmackDown, but after the Bloodline interfered to annihilate the challengers, SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis told Paul Heyman the match will now be a Fatal Four-Way in just over three weeks at the premium live event.

After winning the belt at Crown Jewel in November, Logan Paul will finally defend his United States Championship in a match against Kevin Owens, the winner of the No. 1 Contenders Tournament. Will Paul, who has had a stagnant title run, lose his championship after holding it for almost three months?

Royal Rumble goes down on Saturday, Jan. 27 at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Latest update: Jan. 5, 2025, 10:03 p.m. ET.

WWE Royal Rumble card:

  • Women’s Royal Rumble match
  • Men’s Royal Rumble match
  • Roman Reigns (c) vs. Randy Orton vs. AJ Styles vs. LA Knight – Undisputed WWE Universal Championship match
  • Logan Paul (c) vs. Kevin Owens – WWE United States Championship match

Sorry CM Punk: It would be better for Cody Rhodes to win the Royal Rumble

Yes, CM Punk is the favorite now to win the 2024 Royal Rumble. But that doesn’t mean he should.

There’s something to be said for striking when the iron is hot. One of the first sports I wrote about professionally was boxing, and in the sweet science, promoters often put desirable fights on the back burner hoping they become even bigger down the road, missing out on some prime matchups as a result. Someone loses a fight unexpectedly, someone gets hurt, etc.

WWE isn’t always swayed by what’s hot at any particular moment, choosing to have faith that its long term vision will pay off better than switching gears based on things like the unexpected popularity of certain performers. This explains why Sami Zayn didn’t get to face Roman Reigns last year at WrestleMania, and why it hasn’t put a major championship on LA Knight yet.

But as a popular cliché goes, there are levels to these things, so when an incredibly noteworthy main event player drops in its lap, even WWE has to chart a new course. Such is the case with CM Punk, who no one in the company could possibly have thought would have been available for WrestleMania 40 even four months ago.

Love him or despise him, Punk is a proven attraction in an era where that is an increasingly rare commodity. AEW, while it was probably correct to fire him, still has a void from the star power (and probably merchandise sales) he took with him. His appearance this week on Raw may have saved the ratings from tanking against two Monday Night Football games, and he might even be shaking up the wrestling media rights picture for 2024 and beyond.

With that in mind, it’s no surprise that Punk announced he will be in the Royal Rumble match in January and set in motion a feud everyone already was salivating about with Seth Rollins. The World Heavyweight Champion’s real world dislike for Punk is now being skillfully woven into storyline cloth the way only WWE can do it.

Putting Punk in the Rumble is a no-brainer, because it would make no sense to leave him off WWE’s second-biggest event of the year (sorry, SummerSlam, but it’s true). He’s also expected to win it, which gives WWE a direct path to a Punk-Rollins WrestleMania match that could headline one of two nights in Philadelphia.

(It also allows Punk to, as my son says, “pump fake” challenging Roman Reigns, sowing the seeds for a clash between them down the road.)

All of this is fine in a vacuum. The problem is that it adds unnecessary drama to another narrative that didn’t need any more of it: Cody Rhodes getting a rematch against Reigns and … I’ll say closing the loop because the actual phrase used for his journey has been used way too much.

While a strong argument could be made that WWE did what the boxing promoters I mentioned have been guilty of and missed the best moment possible for Rhodes, it obviously felt there was more to be wrung from his tale. Hence, Cody vs. Roman is a popular pick for the night 2 WrestleMania main event, where you would figure he would finally end Reigns’ historic Universal Championship run.

Prior to Punk’s arrival, Rhodes would have been my pick to win the Rumble, putting him in elite company as only three other men have ever won the match in consecutive years: Hulk Hogan in 1990-91, Shawn Michaels in 1995-96 and Stone Cold Steve Austin in 1997-98. He’s also on Raw while Reigns is on SmackDown, but since the Rumble match winner can choose any champion to challenge, a Rhodes victory would fit in with WWE logic the best possible way.

That now feels unlikely, though WWE teasing it with a final two of Punk and Rhodes would be fun. The guess here is that Rhodes loses and is distraught, figuring his best chance to get his rematch with Reigns is gone. WWE will play up the idea that Cody is suffering through yet more adversity, even though that’s pretty much been his lot in life for the better part of eight months now and we’ve reached the point of diminishing returns for putting the American Nightmare through the ringer.

But wait, you say. WWE has other events on the oft discussed Road to WrestleMania, any of which could be used to get Rhodes back on track. A theory being bandied about is that his title shot could be the prize in Elimination Chamber, particularly since the 2024 event is being held in Australia, and WWE will want to make it as significant as possible.

That’s all well and good, just excessively complicated. We don’t need to see Rhodes squirm in anguish as we’ve seen that plenty. Punk is on Raw with Rollins, and when two wrestlers are on the same show, sometimes they can get title opportunities literally just by asking for them.

I’m not Triple H and would never pretend to be, but here’s what I’d do: Get down to a final four in the Men’s Rumble that consists of Punk, Rhodes and any other two people you think the crowd would believe might have a chance (Drew McIntyre and Solo Sikoa, maybe?). Have it come down to the two favorites.

But don’t have Punk win. He’s the one who should so some squirming now after being gone so long. Have him fret about coming this close to having his WrestleMania main event, with Rollins rubbing his nose in it the next night on Raw.

Rhodes goes on to challenge Reigns, as expected. WWE spends the weeks in-between dragging out the Punk-Rollins program before figuring out some other way to arrive at the same destination, because that’s the feud that could use the extra twists and turns.

It’s not what I expect to happen come Jan. 27. But I hope it does.

WWE Royal Rumble 2024: What the card might look like for St. Petersburg

The 2024 WWE Royal Rumble is bound to have some title matches, and here are four we think we’ll see.

The space between Survivor Series and Royal Rumble on the WWE premium live event calendar is a welcome one, because with the holidays in-between those two shows, there’s less pressure for the company to race toward the next event. As a result, while the 2024 Royal Rumble in St. Petersburg is just seven weeks away, that’s actually a long time in WWE terms.

It should come as little surprise, then, that except for the two traditional Royal Rumble matches, nothing else has yet to be announced. WWE also has the luxury of not needing to do so to sell tickets given the hot streak it’s on with live attendances.

But you know what? That’s fine with us because it means a little more time for speculation and debate over which matches might end up on the card in St. Petersburg. It won’t be a lot, numerically speaking: the 2023 Rumble card had just five matches, and the 2022 edition six.

So with the help of the most recent Wrestling Observer newsletter (subscription required) as a guide, let’s take a look at what might end up on that show.

Roman Reigns vs. Randy Orton – Undisputed WWE Universal Championship match

This is one of those “makes too much sense not to happen” deals. Roman Reigns will be back for the Rumble after sitting out Survivor Series, and he needs a new challenger to hold him over until WrestleMania. Randy Orton is hot on the heels of his return, and was supposed to face Reigns in the second half of 2022 before he got injured.

The pieces are already falling into place. Orton has signed with SmackDown and has his sights set on The Bloodline. Reigns will be back on the show on Dec. 15. A Royal Rumble meeting feels very likely.

IYO SKY vs. Bianca Belair – WWE Women’s Championship match

The last two Royal Rumble shows have seen one of the top women’s titles defended, and this feels like the more likely one this time out. Bianca Belair has made it known she wants to be champion again, and has spearheaded the efforts to fight against Damage CTRL even as the group has grown larger.

The question is whether IYO SKY will be the leader of the faction as well as champ by the time January rolls around. And if she decides to give Bayley the boot, will that make her seem vulnerable and ripe for a title change?

Logan Paul vs. Kevin Owens (maybe) – WWE United States Championship match

Though Logan Paul defeated a legend in Rey Mysterio to claim his first singles gold in WWE, he could use a defense over a real threat to solidify his status as a worthy champion. That’s why the No. 1 contenders tourney, while somewhat silly in most cases when you can often get a title shot just by asking or beating up the champ, makes sense for him.

There’s no guarantee that Kevin Owens will win it, but that does feel like the direction WWE is hinting. It would be a good program, as beating KO at Royal Rumble would feel like a big deal for Paul, and Owens is so over that a loss really doesn’t hurt him at all.

Seth Rollins vs. Drew McIntyre – World Heavyweight Championship match

This matchup feels the least certain, and could definitely be the difference between five or six matches ending up on the card. Drew McIntyre is in the midst of some of his most interesting character work so far, unable to let go of the way The Bloodline hosed him out of a world title at Clash at the Castle (which was last year — huzzah for longform storytelling!) and blaming everyone but himself for the ripple effect it’s had on him.

Heck, Drew is even bitter he’s not on the Royal Rumble poster!

He’s already had one shot at Seth Rollins, but it’s also clear the Scottish Warrior isn’t done with him. Rollins could be headed toward a WrestleMania program with CM Punk, but a rematch with McIntyre at Royal Rumble would make sense with the way things are currently set up. If neither man announces for the Rumble match, this gets even more likely.

Expect Roman Reigns to defend his title at Royal Rumble — but not against LA Knight

Looks like the Megastar won’t be getting another shot at the Tribal Chief at the 2024 WWE Royal Rumble.

[anyclip-media thumbnail=”https://cdn5.anyclip.com/WIkU7YsBAidIEnNC6h6-/1700489704379_248x140_thumbnail.jpg” playlistId=”undefined” content=”PHNjcmlwdCBzcmM9Imh0dHBzOi8vcGxheWVyLnBvcHRvay5jb20vYW55Y2xpcC13aWRnZXQvbHJlLXdpZGdldC9wcm9kL3YxL3NyYy9scmUuanMiIGRhdGEtYXI9IjE2OjkiIGRhdGEtcGxpZD0iazVld3d2anhsZnp1ZXFsam1yZXVrM3NvaW0zZ3Fucm4iIHB1Ym5hbWU9IjE5OTgiIHdpZGdldG5hbWU9IjAwMTZNMDAwMDJVMEIxa1FBRl9NODMzMCI+Cjwvc2NyaXB0Pg==”][/anyclip-media]

Roman Reigns won’t be at Survivor Series, but he should be back in the fold for Royal Rumble in January. The Undisputed WWE Universal Champion should also be putting his title on the line, and while we don’t know yet who may step up to challenge him, a new report suggests there’s one name that can be crossed off the list of potential contenders.

That would be LA Knight. The most organically over wrestler in WWE over the past few months already got one shot at Reigns at Crown Jewel, but he fell short thanks to intervention from the other members of The Bloodline.

Since then, Knight has made it clear that he intends to dismantle Reigns’ group one member at a time, which has led some to believe that the end game would be a rematch between Knight and Reigns at Royal Rumble.

But as Lee Corso might say, not so fast, my friend.

Dave Meltzer addressed the topic of Reigns’ next match in his latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required), saying that while the Tribal Chief will be in action, it’s probably not going to be against Knight.

We were told that as of this time Reigns vs. Knight is not the title match at Rumble. That is Reigns’ next match. There are those who feel it should be Knight in that spot but we were told Levesque has another plan right now

With Survivor Series going down this weekend, there’s certainly enough time to position someone else to face Reigns. One idea is a returning Randy Orton, who never got the program with Roman that was expected last year due to injury.

As for Knight, maybe his beef with The Bloodline culminates in a match against Solo Sikoa, at least for now. There’s also the possibility that he will be in the Royal Rumble match itself, where he’d be expected to be among the favorites to win it.

In any case, WWE likely won’t sit on Knight too much since he remains hot right now. And Reigns is Reigns, so he’ll be one of the big selling points of Royal Rumble no matter who he faces, and he’ll almost certainly win so he can retain his title heading into WrestleMania 40 next spring.

WWE confirms Royal Rumble 2024 will take place in Tampa

Tampa was said to be the leading candidate to host the 2024 WWE Royal Rumble since this summer.

The Road to WrestleMania 40 will begin in Florida.

WWE announced today that the 37th Royal Rumble will take place at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida, home of MLB’s Tampa Bay Rays, on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024. The show will be part of a full weekend of events in the Tampa area, including the Raw after the Rumble at Tampa’s Amalie Arena.

“Tampa Bay has long been a terrific market for WWE,” WWE Executive Vice President of Live Events John Porco said in a press release. “Thanks to our partners at the Tampa Bay Rays, Visit St. Pete/Clearwater and the Tampa Bay Sports Commission, we look forward to a fantastic schedule of events in January.”

Tampa was said to be the leading candidate to host the 2024 Royal Rumble since July, when both PWInsider and Fightful reported that the city was a frontrunner. Tropicana Field hosted the event only two years ago, but that was during the COVID-19 pandemic and the show was held in front of no live fans. Orlando was the site of the 2016 Rumble and Miami hosted in 2006, but Tampa hasn’t been the host city with a live crowd since 1995.

WWE squashed any thoughts of significant changes by confirming that the upcoming Royal Rumble will once again be headlined by two 30-person Royal Rumble matches, one each for men and women, with the winners receiving championship matches at WrestleMania 40 in Philadelphia.

Ticket on-sale information will be revealed in the next few weeks, but anyone wishing to have a opportunity at a pre-sale opportunity can register online now.

Report: Florida city frontrunner for Royal Rumble 2024

It’s been a while since the rumored Royal Rumble 2024 host city was the venue for the show with fans in attendance.

Florida fans, get ready to start practicing your countdowns from 10.

PW Insider Elite (subscription required) is the latest to chime in with word that WWE Royal Rumble 2024 could be headed your way — specifically to Tropicana Field, home of the MLB Tampa Bay Rays. Fightful Select (subscription also required) agrees, saying its spoken to people who feel “Tampa has been a front runner for quite some time.”

The Royal Rumble was held at Tropicana Field just three years ago, but that was out of necessity instead of design. Smack dab in the middle of WWE’s COVID-19 pandemic phase, all WWE programming was originating from that venue at the time, when it was called the WWE ThunderDome and no fans were on hand.

Hosting the show next year would obviously be a much different proposition, and part of WWE’s strategy of making Royal Rumble a larger stadium show that first began in 2019. Prior to the pandemic event, the Tampa-St. Pete area had been the locale for the Royal Rumble just once, in 1995 at the USF Sun Dome.

Florida in general has hosted the Royal Rumble in four other years: 1990 in Orlando, 1991 and 2006 in Miami, and 2016 in Orlando.

The announcement of the venue for the 2023 Royal Rumble, which took place in San Antonio, was made on Sept. 7, 2022. That suggests there are about six weeks before WWE reveals the site for 2024, which isn’t that long for people in the Tampa area to keep their fingers crossed.

15 best WWE PPVs of all time: Which WWE events were the greatest ever?

Which WWE PPV was the best of all time? We give our list of the top 15.

Long before WWE decided to start calling its biggest shows premium live events, pro wrestling fans knew them as pay-per-views, or PPVs. It was a fitting name since everyone literally had to pay extra to watch them, as opposed to weekly TV broadcasts on network or cable (though of course, viewers paid for that too).

While the history of wrestling PPVs traces its history back to the 1983 edition of Starrcade shown on closed-circuit television, the then-WWF first dipped its toes into that water with the first WrestleMania in 1985. Since then, WWE PPVs have become part of the rhythm of wrestling fandom, usually taking place monthly but for some years even more often than that.

That means there have been now been hundreds of these big cards over the decades, from WrestleMania to SummerSlam to Royal Rumble to all kinds of shows that have come and gone. And while most were examples of what WWE does best, some have withstood the test of time to linger in the memory longer than the rest.

Picking the best of the best is no easy task, and while the Wrestling Junkie staff has its own opinions, we decided to make this a more democratic affair. Like we did for our list of the best WWE matches of all time, our list of best pay-per-views utilizes reviews left by fans on Cagematch to sort through the gems.

And yes, premium live events are eligible as well. They’re all still PPVs to us, even if they come via a monthly subscription.

Without further ado, here are the 15 best WWE PPVs of all time, starting at No. 15 and working up to the top.

Rhea Ripley learned about Women’s WWE Royal Rumble win 2 days prior

Interestingly, Rhea Ripley wasn’t sure if her cardio was in the right place to go start to finish in the 2023 Women’s Royal Rumble match.

Rhea Ripley has had quite the year in 2023, emerging victorious against Charlotte Flair at WWE WrestleMania 39 to win the SmackDown Women’s Championship. Along with wins at two premium live events in May, as well as maintaining a leading presence in the Judgment Day faction, the Australian has faired well.

Ripley’s momentum began with her Royal Rumble win, however, entering the ring first and lasting over an hour. She became the only woman to do this since the inaugural Women’s Royal Rumble in 2018. That victory also cemented her place in a title match at WrestleMania and led to one of the weekend’s top bouts.

In an interview with Mark Andrews on My Love Letter to Wrestling, Ripley revealed she learned about her in-ring epic just two days prior to the Royal Rumble (h/t Fightful for transcription).

“I want to say two nights before. I got a message, ‘How is your cardio?’ What do you mean how is my cardio? I’ve been a manager the last few months. I’m happy to do 20 minutes on the elliptical, but what are we talking about here? When they finally told me, I was like, ‘You’re joking, right?’ I think I could do it because adrenaline is a powerful thing, but at the same time I was like, ‘I don’t know if I’m going to be able to do it,'” recalled Rhea.

History was made when she stepped into the ring that night as Ripley indeed did it, becoming the winner of the fifth Women’s Royal Rumble. It propelled her to success after an injury-riddled 2022 that sidelined her for most of the summer and arguably made her a bigger star.

It will be curious to find out how long WWE lets Ripley hold her title. Other champions have had long reigns recently, so she might enjoy this wire-to-wire win for a long time.
