10 best WWE games of all time: Top WWE video games ever

There have been plenty of WWE video games over the years, but which ones are the best? We count down the top 10.

WWE fans who also love video games have been somewhat spoiled over the years. For decades, there have been games that connect the action they love so much on weekly TV and pay-per-views to home gaming consoles, and on nearly an annual basis to boot.

Of course quantity does not equal quality, and the history of WWE games is littered with a fair share of mediocre and downright bad titles that made their way to market. Pro wrestling, as it turns out, isn’t necessarily easy to translate to other media.

We’re not here to talk about the stumbles, though, but the triumphs, the games that have stood the test of time. Which WWE video games are the ones that live in the hearts of fans forever? We’re strolling back through memory lane to find out.

First, some ground rules: Our list only includes titles that were widely released for the home video consoles of their era. That excludes things like the venerable “WWF Superstars” (which did eventually make its way to home gaming) and “WWF WrestleMania: The Arcade Game.”

It also excludes mobile games like “WWE SuperCard” which, while popular, are kind of their own category unto themselves.

And as with all of our lists here at Wrestling Junkie, this one pulls in an objective element (well, an objective compilation of subjective reviews, anyway) in the form of Metacritic ratings. We didn’t let that dictate these rankings but did lean on that to help separate the wheat from the chaff.

Psyched to revisit some favorites? Let’s count down the 10 best WWE games of all time.

Bray Wyatt is back … in WWE 2K23, at least

Fans are still waiting for Bray Wyatt to return to action in WWE, but they can play some matches with him in WWE 2K23 right now.

While Bray Wyatt continues to be absent from WWE due to a health condition that means he’s not cleared to wrestle, his fans can still pretend he’s around and right in the mix of the company’s current hot streak thanks to the new Revel with Wyatt Pack DLC for WWE 2K23.

As the name suggests, Wyatt is the centerpiece of this character pack, the fourth of five announced this spring by 2K. Along with Bray in his latest look (though that’s getting harder to remember the longer he’s on the shelf), the pack also includes his sometimes ally, sometimes tormenter — and real life brother — Uncle Howdy.

The other new playable wrestlers in the Revel with Wyatt Pack are:

  • Valhalla of the Viking Raiders
  • NXT wrestlers Joe Gacy and Blair Davenport
  • Zeus … not the Greek god, mind you, but the character from the movie “No Holds Barred” who crossed over into actual WWF stories to challenge Hulk Hogan (honest, we’re not making that up)

Check them all out in the trailer below:

The Revel with Wyatt Pack is available for $9.99 on any platform, or as part of the $39.99 Season Pass for WWE 2K23 that gets you all of the packs released so far plus the one yet to come.

WWE 2K23 is available now for pretty much any console you might own plus PC. You can read our impressions of the game here.

WWE 2K23 1.13 patch notes: Sami Zayn’s entrance music fixed

WWE 2K23’s latest patch prepares for the upcoming Bray Wyatt DLC but also brings back Sami Zayn’s classic entrance music.

WWE 2K23’s next DLC drops tomorrow, with the highly-anticipated arrival of Bray Wyatt to the game’s roster, alongside his mysterious partner Uncle Howdy, NXT stars Blair Davenport and Joe Gacy, the Viking Raider’s valet Valhalla, and Hulk Hogan movie villain Zeus. It’s a strange and varied cast of characters, and this patch adds the support needed for the upcoming DLC pack, along with a series of bug fixes and gameplay tweaks.

Most exciting though is the addition of Sami Zayn’s old entrance music “Worlds Apart”. Zayn’s persona in 2K23 is based on his heel run as a member of The Bloodline, he turned his back on the faction and became a babyface again shortly before the game was released, but there wasn’t enough time for the development team to change his in-game persona – so it’s nice to finally get his babyface music in the game.

WWE 2K23 1.08 patch notes for PS5, Xbox, and PC

WWE 2K23 update 1.08 is releasing ahead of the first DLC pack. Here are the full patch notes.

WWE 2K23’s first DLC pack is releasing tomorrow, and a major patch is coming to the game ahead of it. While the DLC will add five new superstars – the three members of Hit Row and the Steiner Brothers – this patch makes a couple of minor additions but is mostly about bug fixes. While we already know the patch notes, we don’t know exactly when this patch will be released. However, you can expect it to drop in the next 24 hours, before the DLC releases.

We’ll give you the full WWE 2K23 patch notes for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC.

Using WWE 2K23 to predict WrestleMania 39 winners

Wrestlemania 39 is coming up fast, and we used WWE 2K23 to simulate who might win some of the coveted titles

In just a few days, some of the best professional wrestlers will descend upon Los Angeles to throw down in the biggest event on the wrestling calendar, WrestleMania. Everyone’s getting a little bit excited, as the almost 1000-day reign of Roman Reigns, the Tribal Chief, is at stake, along with a host of matches that promise to knock your socks off.

With the release of WWE 2K23 earlier in the month, we’ve decided to put it to the test and see if it could predict the outcome of every match in WrestleMania 39.

WWE 2K23 update 1.03 patch notes for PS5, Xbox, and PC

One day before the standard edition releases, WWE 2K23 update 1.03 has released. We’ll give you the full patch notes.

WWE 2K23 is currently available for owners of the deluxe edition, and it’s just one day away for everyone else, so it’s no surprise that a patch dropped last night to sure up the game before the masses descend upon it. The pre-release period has brought a few notable bugs for players, with the creation suite, in particular, being prone to crashes on PS5 and Xbox.

Both the current and last gen will be receiving this patch, but the details are different for each, so here are the full WWE 2K23 patch notes for update 1.03.

As you do, there are a few surprises and secrets along the way, like alternate versions of WWE wrestlers, or some unique arenas. Finding these in MyRise will unlock them in general play mode, and the Accelerator Pack that comes with the Deluxe Editions won’t unlock them for you.

We’ll go through everything you can unlock playing MyRise so that you can get your hands on these exclusive features. We also have a rundown of every WWE 2K23 Showcase unlockable so you can get everything in the game.

WWE 2K23 Showcase unlockables list

WWE 2K23 Showcase mode is a whirlwind tour of John Cena’s career. Here’s how to unlock everything in this mode.

The WWE 2K23 Showcase mode this year is all about John Cena. You get to play as some of his greatest opponents, serving as a potted history of Cena’s mammoth WWE career. You can complete the mode by simply winning every match, but in order to get all of the unlockable rewards, you’ll need to complete every objective, playing the matches out as they happened in real life.

What’s more, the Accelerator Pack that comes with the Deluxe Editions doesn’t unlock any of these rewards, so if you want wrestlers like Kurt Angle or Rob Van Dam, you’ll need to play Showcase mode.

We’ll take you through every Showcase match in order, and go through every unlockable. If you want to know what else is hidden in the game, check out our list of every WWE 2K23 MyRise unlockable.

WWE 2K23 MyGM review: The more the merrier, hopefully

MyGM gives you more options in WWE 2K23, but are they enough to keep armchair bookers in it for the long run?

What’s hard to do but everyone thinks they could do it better? There are a lot of correct answers to that, but in pro wrestling, booking shows is the best response. It’s difficult to lead any wrestling promotion or brand to financial profitability and public adoration, yet almost every fan engages in armchair booking all the time. That very fantasy is at the heart of WWE 2K23’s MyGM mode, which would feel shallow if it was its own title but is fine as part of a larger wrestling game.

True to … well, the actual WWE, MyGM doesn’t acknowledge the existence of outside wrestling promotions. The competition is strictly internal, as you take the role of a general manager for one of WWE’s internal brands — Raw, SmckDown, NXT, and new for this year, NXT 2.0 and WCW — and try to lead it to higher ratings and more money than the others.

Your competition can be any mix of one to three human or AI opponents. The range of GMs has also been expanded in WWE 2K23, allowing you to use Adam Pearce, Sonya Deville, Stephanie McMahon (famously no longer with WWE in the real world), Xavier Woods, Tyler Breeze, Kurt Angle, Eric Bischoff, Mick Foley or your own custom superstar as your personal proxy.

Each GM and each brand has its own special ability, so there are legit reasons for picking specific ones other than personal preference. There are a number of setting you can modify ahead of the start of a new MyGM session, including the AI and game difficulty, opening budgets for each brand, the draft order and draft pool (so you can include created wrestlers if you so desire).

Knowing (your foes) is half the battle

A MyGM season consists of 25 weeks, most of which include your brand’s weekly TV show with regularly interspersed premium live events. Your main task each week is to book each show, consisting of several matches and several optional promo segments; there are more of both for PLEs.

There’s a lot to balance to put on the best show, including the stamina and morale of your wrestlers, the cost of each match – those Hell in a Cell bouts aren’t cheap, you know — and which performers work best with others. You’ll also occasionally end up making promises you need to fulfill within a certain time, with potentially disastrous effects on morale if you aren’t true to your word.

To achieve the best possible ratings and make the most money, you also have to lay out your show with the best rhythm: a good opener, slightly less compelling midcard bouts, and then a superior main event. Ideally, they’re all as good as they can be, but arranging things properly takes some time to master.

You’re not doing this in a vacuum either, so keeping tabs on what the competition is doing is critical. It’s also very possible to upset the other GMs’ best laid plans thanks to power cards, which have temporary effects that can be detrimental to their shows or beneficial to your own. AI GMs can play them back on you too, however.

Some trash talking tends to occur when power cards are played, and though your dialogue options are limited, it’s still a fun little detail.

In it for the long haul

Even in a single calendar year, MyGM would be entertaining, but the ability to extend things into multiple seasons and have your GM chase Hall of Fame status promises to add some extra heft to this mode. While a new draft each season shuffles the deck, there are tools at your disposal to keep wrestlers around if you want, almost like a keeper draft in fantasy football.

The question is whether playing through multiple seasons has enough hooks to keep you engaged over time. WWE 2K23 has introduced Shake Ups that occur on a regular basis to keep you on your toes, but they’re not the kinds of things that would warrant that definition in real life — like a sale of WWE or the acquisition of WCW, for example.

And while My GM has added new match types to your list of weekly options, it’s not like those change over time either. Online fans have suggested that to make WCW feel authentic, it would have been sweet to use some of the real world pay-per-view names in the mode. Or maybe premium live events could simply shuffle in and out as you advance through seasons, which is something WWE does with its IRL schedule.

Still, maybe that’s expecting a bit too much from a booking sim that is only one part of a wrestling game that’s trying to offer as many different ways to play as possible. MyGM has definitely stepped it up a bit from last year, with more ways to show us all exactly why fantasy booking is usually exactly that.
