When they last met: Commanders and Panthers

What happened the last time Washington and Carolina played?

“When they last met” is an ongoing series during the NFL season, recalling the preceding game between Washington and the next opponent on the Commanders’ schedule.

Washington 27, Carolina 21 – Week 11, Nov. 21, 2021

In Cam Newton’s return to Carolina, Ron Rivera’s team, led by Taylor Heinicke, ruined Newton’s festive day. Washington came into Charlotte and defeated the Panthers 27-21.

Heinicke twice responded with Washington down by a touchdown to lead scoring drives and toss touchdown passes. Trailing 7-0, Heinicke connected with Cam Sims from six yards, tying the score with 13:29 in the second quarter.

Trailing 14-7 and driving, attempting to score before the half, Heinicke found Terry McLaurin with only nine seconds remaining for a 12-yard touchdown tying the game at halftime.

Washington drove and scored with 9:21 remaining in the third quarter, taking their first lead of the game at 21-14 when Heinicke passed to DeAndre Carter from four yards out.

Heinicke had his finest career day as an NFL quarterback, completing 16 of 22 passes for 206 yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions. He recorded a 141.3 passer rating in the victory, the team’s second consecutive victory after upsetting the Tampa Bay Bucs the previous week at FedEx Field.

McLaurin led Washington with 103 receiving yards, while Antonio Gibson provided 95 rushing yards.

Newton completed 21 of 27 attempts for 189 yards and two touchdowns for a 120.5 passer rating. Christian McCaffrey led the Panthers with 59 rushing yards and 60 receiving yards.

Washington leads the all-time series, having won 10 of the 17 games played since the series began in 1995.

When they last met: Commanders vs. Buccaneers

Remember the last time Washington faced Tampa Bay?

“When they last met” is an ongoing series during the NFL season, recalling the preceding game between Washington and the next opponent on the Commanders’ schedule.

Washington 29, Tampa Bay 19 – Week 10, Nov. 10, 2021

Taylor Heinicke had perhaps his finest game for Washington, leading the Football Team to an upset win at FedEx Field over Tampa Bay 29-19.

Heinicke completed 26 of 32 for 256 yards, a touchdown, and no interceptions, while the defending Super Bowl champion Tom Brady threw two interceptions that set up scores for Washington.

The 6-2 Buccaneers, though the road team, entered the game a solid 9.5-point favorite. But the Football Team, which was 2-6, found itself up 13-0, as Brady was intercepted twice.

Joey Slye connected on field goals from 56 and 28 yards. Heinicke connected with DeAndre Carter from 20 yards, and Washington led 13-0 in the second quarter.

Following a Buccaneers field goal, Joey Slye connected again, this time from 29 yards, with 58 seconds remaining in the half for a 16-3 Washington lead.

Brady connected with Cameron Brate from six yards, narrowing Tampa Bay’s deficit to 16-13 with 8:46 remaining in the third quarter.

Antonio Gibson scored from a yard out, extending Washington’s lead to 23-13 at 4:21 of the third quarter.

Brady then found Mike Evans from 40 yards, and the Bucs closed to 23-19, but Ryan Succup’s extra point was missed, meaning the Bucs couldn’t tie with a field goal but would need a touchdown.

Washington then drove 80 yards in 19 plays, taking 10:26 of time. Gibson again scored from one yard for the final 29-19 margin.

Terry McLaurin led Washington with six receptions for 59 yards, and Carter contributed 3 for 56 yards. Evans led Tampa Bay with 62 receiving yards, and Chris Godwin contributed 57. Brady finished 23 of 34 for 220 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions.

Note: This was the game Washington defensive end Chase Young tore an ACL and was thus out for the remainder of 2021 and most of 2022.

Commanders season opener in 1 day: Washington’s best No. 1

1 day until Week 1.

Commanders Wire continues a countdown to Washington’s season opener for 2023 in 1 day. Who was the team’s best player wearing No. 1?

Jahan Dotson is currently No. 1 for Washington. We certainly hope he has a great career and would then easily be the best No. 1 in franchise history.

Receiver DeAndre Carter (2021) had 24 receptions for 3 touchdowns and averaged 25.1 yards on kick returns, including a 101-yard touchdown against the Falcons.

Two kickers have worn No. 1 for Washington. Scott Bentley had kicked for the Falcons, Broncos and Chiefs before arriving in Washington in 2000. Though he kicked for six games, the former FSU Seminole only attempted one field goal, which he made from 50 yards.

After kicking for the Bills, John Potter came to the Redskins in 2013. He connected on all seven extra points and three of his four field goal attempts.

Four punters have worn No. 1. Reggie Roby, after ten seasons in Miami, came to Washington in 1993 and was an All-Pro 1st team in 1994 as well, before moving on from the Redskins.

Ryan Plackemeier punted ten games for Washington in 2008, and Sam Paulescu punted four games over two seasons (2009-2010).

Matt Turk (1995-99) punted five seasons for the Burgundy and Gold. Turk was a Pro Bowler three of those seasons (1996, 1997, 1998), All-Pro 2nd team in 1997 and 1998, and All-Pro 1st Team in 1996. Therefore, Turk is our choice as the best player in franchise history to have worn jersey No. 1.
