While being interviewed by Nicolas Laprivottla (Deck’s teammate on Real Madrid and the Argentinian national team) Hola Que Tal Como Estas podcast, Ginobili revealed that Bryant became nothing less than enamored with Deck’s game during the World Cup. “Kobe didn’t know all the names but he was wondering,” Ginobili said. “Kobe was completely passionate about basketball, a student of the game. He asked me and I answered about the players. H fell in love with Tortuga (Gabriel Deck’s nickname). I told Tortuga after that he had a fan in Kobe and that he wanted to take him to the Lakers. He asked me and we commented on the decisions of the coach, I told him about the characteristics of those he didn’t know. He was interested but came a time when I was nervous and didn’t want to talk anymore.”

Last summer, Adebayo was cut from the USA Basketball tryouts for the World Cup. That only added fuel to his fire. “For me, it’s just going out there and proving people wrong,” he said. “I took that to the chin, and it gave me a bigger chip on my shoulder for the season.” It is why he is hopeful that this is not all there will be for the 2019-20 season. “I’m thinking bigger picture; I want a championship,” he said. “I feel like we can make a run and make noise and do a lot of things that people said we couldn’t.”

Chris Bosh: This was my last picture …

Chris Bosh: This was my last picture with you at the 2019 World Cup. We had dinner that night afterwards and we had a legendary night just hanging at the dinner table. We talked all night about writing, storytelling, film, books, music and the game. You told me how you were going to win another Oscar and a Tony award for things you had in the works. You talked about how GiGi is a beast on the court and how fundamentally sound she was and how she had every move down at her young age. I was just soaking up as much of your greatness as I could. We talked about your scheduled days and how you put everything in to being a father, coach and executive among other things and how to balance it all. I enjoyed our convos and I took so much to try and learn from you for my next chapter in life after ball.I find myself racking my brain trying to remember your words that night because I just knew there would be another conversation and I’d have even more questions to ask you the next time we met up. You’ve set the standard for excellence around the world. I cherish the moments we had man. Most importantly I pray for strength for your wife & kids. This one hurts really bad. Going forward I know you’ll be that voice pushing me and others to do more when we’re tired and think we have nothing left to give. Rest In Peace my brother.Going forward I know you’ll be that voice pushing me and others to do more when we’re tired and think we have nothing left to give. He wishes the league would build out more streamable content in the offseason, like investing in The Basketball Tournament or the Big 3. “Right?” he says. “We should have NBA content year-round, but it’s beyond the definition of stupidity that we take our best players and we let them play for the Olympics, which is a commercial event.” In Cuban’s mind, basketball should be more like soccer. “What’s a bigger event, soccer in the Olympics, or the World Cup of soccer?” he asks. “Why can’t we do the same thing?”

But in late September last year, he decided it was time for a change. He’d recently returned from a trip to China, where he had suited up in the FIBA World Cup for Team USA. He was excited for the tournament. The previous season had worn him down, and he was giddy about the opportunity to rack up some successes, to remember what it felt like to have fun on the court. “I wanted to win that so badly,” he says. “It would have been good for me.” Brown played well, but the team did not, losing twice and failing to qualify for the medal round. “I was devastated,” Brown says. He spent the night after the first defeat to France awake in his hotel room, replaying the game in his head.
