Welcome back from another successful weekend of Florida Gators sports! Three UF athletic teams were in action over the past couple of days and all three emerged victorious from their respective campaigns. We all know how the football game turned out — a 31-19 win over the Tennessee Volunteers in Knoxville — let us take a look at how the two basketball squads fared.
The women’s team also played on Saturday, hosting the Cincinnati Bearcats and laying an 81-58 beatdown of the visitors. Sophomore guard Lavender Briggs led the way with 22 points, five rebounds and three assists while senior guard Kiki Smith added 19 points and six rebounds to push the squad’s record to 3-1. The Lady Gators play again tonight when they host the Florida Atlantic Owls, with tip off scheduled for 8 p.m. EST.
Lastly, the men’s basketball team annihilated the Stetson Hatters, 86-40, on Sunday to move their record to 3-0 on the young season. Sophomore guard Scottie Lewis notched his first double-double of the season, scoring 10 points while grabbing 10 boards and dishing out six assists. The guys next play on Dec. 12 against the Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee, with tip off scheduled for 11 a.m. EST.
Around the Swamp
- Florida Gators slip in Amway Coaches Poll for Week 14: It appears that UF’s less-than-authoritative win over the Vols left the voters unimpressed this week, elevating the Texas A&M Aggies to fifth overall.
- Florida keeps footing in AP Poll’s Week 14 standings: UF’s fall to sixth in the coaches’ take brings the two polls to an agreement, as the AP’s opinion has kept Florida at that spot for five-straight weeks now.
- CBS Sports’ rankings agree with the others, keep UF at No. 6: Florida’s 31-19 win over Tennessee clinched a spot in Atlanta, but its lackadaisical performance in that game did little to improve its standing in the rankings.
- ESPN has no love for Florida in its latest College Football Playoff picks: It has one loss against Texas A&M, but barring a slip up against LSU next week, a win in the SEC Championship would almost guarantee the Gators a spot in the College Football Playoff.
- ESPN identifies most important commit in Florida’s 2021 football class: There is some good news when it comes to the 2021 recruiting cycle as ESPN ranks the Gators’ upcoming class.
- Yes, Kyle Trask punted the ball and it was glorious: One of the more notable events from yesterday’s game was not a big touchdown pass or a crushing defensive play, but a surprise pooch punt by UF quarterback Kyle Trask.
It’s great to be a Florida Gator!
