Wolfsburg stun Arsenal to reach UWCL final in front of record Emirates crowd

A crowd of 60,000 got their money’s worth — though the Gunners fell just short in a thriller

Monday was a record-breaking evening in north London but unfortunately for Arsenal, it did not include a famous victory over German powerhouse Wolfsburg.

Pauline Bremer scored in the 119th minute to seal a thrilling Women’s Champions League semifinal tie, giving the visitors a 3-2 win on the night and a 5-4 win on aggregate.

The goal soured what was otherwise a massive occasion for the women’s game, as an announced crowd of 60,063 set a record for the largest attendance for a women’s club match in England. That figure broke the previous record of 49,094 set in the 2022 FA Cup final.

The Gunners and Wolfsburg traded goals in a back-and-forth affair. Stina Blackstenius gave Arsenal the lead in the11th minute, before Jill Roord and Alex Popp scored on either side of halftime to put the German side back in front.

But the home side would answer when Jen Beattie headed home a dramatic equalizer in the 75th minute that sent the tie into extra time.

Just as it appeared the affair would be settled on penalties, Lotte Wubben-Moy was caught in possession by Jule Brand, who crossed for Bremer to tap home and give Wolfsburg a stunning late win.

Wolfsburg advanced to the Champions League final against Barcelona on June 3. The German side will be looking for its third Champions League title and first since 2014.

Jordan Pefok is doing his best to make Gregg Berhalter re-think his plans

The recent USMNT snub just keeps on scoring goals in Germany

Jordan Pefok is clearly determined to make Gregg Berhalter’s job as hard as possible.

Just days after USMNT head coach Berhalter omitted Pefok from his latest roster, the Union Berlin forward continued his fantastic start to life in the Bundesliga with a goal against Wolfsburg.

The 26-year-old opened the scoring on Sunday with a glancing header, his third Bundesliga goal of the season and his fourth in all competitions.

Union Berlin would go on to win the match 2-0, in the process reclaiming first place in the Bundesliga. It was enough to give the team’s social media admin some justifiable fuel for a cheeky nod at the forward’s recent USMNT snub.

Berhalter has been adamant that the door isn’t closed on players who didn’t make his roster for September’s friendlies against Japan and Saudi Arabia, the final squad he will name before his 26-man World Cup roster.

Asked about Pefok specifically, the USMNT coach said: “We’re pretty confident we know Jordan’s profile, we know what he can do. And we didn’t feel like we needed to see him in this camp to determine whether he can be on the [World Cup] roster or not.”

Berhalter also made an appearance at halftime of ESPN’s broadcast of the Portland Timbers vs. Columbus Crew on Sunday, and was asked again about Pefok following his goal against Wolfsburg.

The USMNT coach didn’t sound like someone ready to reconsider the striker, instead saying his only path to a World Cup spot would likely be through injury to another player.

“When guys get in camp, there will probably be five players that were expected to be on the roster that couldn’t take part because of injury,” Berhalter said.

“So what I would say is that there probably will be an opportunity for guys that aren’t in this camp just because of attrition. And that’s something we’re expecting to happen. We hope it doesn’t, but it’s likely based on what’s happened in the past.”

What is going on with American prospects at Wolfsburg?

The Bundesliga club has a less-than-stellar track record with young American players

Two years ago, the Bundesliga website ran an article titled “Why do Wolfsburg have so many young Americans?”

In it, no fewer than four top American prospects were mentioned: Ulysses Llanez, Michael Edwards, Bryang Kayo and Kobe Hernandez-Foster.

All four of them teenagers. All four U.S. youth internationals. And now, two years later, all four of them are gone.

It is through that lens that we must now analyze the situation another top American prospect, Kevin Paredes, is experiencing at the club. It was only this January when Wolfsburg paid D.C. United over $7 million to sign the teenage left back, who had already been called into the U.S. senior national team.

But Paredes has played just 13 total minutes for Wolfsburg thus far. Worryingly, the 19-year-old wasn’t even named to the matchday squad for the club’s first two Bundesliga games this season.

Wolfsburg has been a successful destination for at least one American in the recent past. John Brooks left the club at the end of last season after five years in which he was usually a starter.

But things haven’t gone as well recently when Wolfsburg has signed up-and-coming young Americans, rather than those already established in the German top flight.

As another young American struggles to break through, the situation at Wolfsburg is worth reviewing.

Prediction

Bayern Munich 2, Wolfsburg 2

Moneyline (ML)

Bayern Munich (-150) is a heavy favorite on the road, but it has the title wrapped up yet again. As a result, team manager Hansi Flick might elect to rest a few key members of his personnel ahead of the Cup Final. That makes Wolfsburg (+340) an intriguing play at home, and perhaps worth a small-unit play. A DRAW (+340) is the same odds as a Wolfsburg win, and a better wager.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 3.5 (-134) is worth a look. Wolfsburg may see a few more offensive opportunities with Flick using more reserves than usual in the match. Wolfsburg has conceded at least two goals in three consecutive home matches. In addition, Bayern Munich has scored at least two goals in 16 of the past 19 Bundesliga matches, so count on Bayern Munich putting it into the back of the net at least twice.
