Sabrina Ionescu and New York Liberty eliminated from WNBA playoffs Tuesday

Former Oregon guard Sabrina Ionescu and the New York Liberty were eliminated by the Chicago Sky in the first round of the WNBA playoffs.

After a resounding victory in Game 1, Sabrina Ionescu and the New York Liberty were dispatched in the next two games by the Chicago Sky, eliminating the former Oregon star from the playoffs.

New York was trailing by just three points early in the fourth quarter, and they looked primed to make a comeback and potentially eliminate the defending champions before Chicago went on a 22-7 run to close out the game, led by Candace Parker and Courtney Vandersloot.

Ionescu finished her final game of the season with 14 points, six rebounds, and four assists.

Ruthy Hebard advanced with the Sky, although she does not look like she will be part of the rotation much as the playoffs continue. She played 90 seconds in Chicago’s win over New York on Tuesday, going 0-1 from deep.

Nyara Sabally is also rostered by the Liberty, although a knee injury prevented her from suiting up as a rookie this season. She’ll add reinforcements to Ionescu’s squad as they look to make the playoffs again next season, and hopefully stave off early elimination.

Liberty’s Marine Johannes made an incredibly stunning backwards no-look pass to fool the Sky

Marine Johannes, are you kidding me?

Game 1 of the WNBA Playoffs between the New York Liberty and Chicago Sky was a stunner.

The reigning 2021 WNBA champions — the Sky — fell to the Liberty 98-91 off the back of Sabrina Ionescu and Natasha Howard scoring 22 points each. Not to be outdone, however, was Marine Johannes, who made an absolutely ridiculous solo effort play in the fourth quarter.

With the Sky up 91-85, Johannes started the Liberty’s rally off of this brilliant no-look backwards pass to Howard for the easy up and in. It’s a truly spectacular solo effort here from Johannes, who trusts Howard to be in the right place at the right time for the grab and score.

Of course, the alternate angle is just as mesmerizing as well.

In the end, the Liberty were able to hold the Sky scoreless for over three minutes as they battled back to win Game 1. What a gusty play from Johannes and what a win for New York!

August Sports Betting Calendar: NFL Preseason, US Open and WNBA Playoffs

Novak Djokovic goes for a second straight Grand Slam title. And football is back!

The wait is over for those starved of football. The August sports betting calendar is highlighted by the return of the NFL in the form of preseason play, though I personally wouldn’t wager on those wholly unpredictable games.

Besides, there’s so much more going on in August.

Novak Djokovic will go for a second straight Grand Slam title when the US Open gets underway near the end of the month. WNBA teams jockey for playoff position until the start of the playoffs in mid-August. And all three of the FedEx Cup Playoffs will determine a winner on the PGA Tour.

Here’s a look at all of that and more going on.

A’ja Wilson was completely overcome by emotion after losing in heartbreaking fashion to the Mercury

Wow this is just so painful.

Professional athletes are hyper-competitive. They have to be so they’re able to play at the highest possible level every day.

There’s lots of work that goes into being a pro. It’s the training. It’s the workouts. It’s the treatment. It’s preparing yourself mentally. Athletes pour all of their time into those things to accomplish one goal and that goal is winning a championship.

When they can’t accomplish it? It hurts. But especially so when you’re so close to getting it done.

We saw that pain come out in A’ja Wilson on Friday after the Las Vegas Aces lost a heartbreaking game to the Phoenix Mercury.

And it wasn’t just any game — this was game 5 of the Semifinals. This was the Aces chance to get back into the WNBA Finals and potentially win a championship. It felt like it was their time.

It wasn’t. The Mercury won after a block and a game winner from Diana Taurasi. It was incredible. It was also very sudden and, I imagine, very painful for the Aces.

It wasn’t just the loss — it was the fashion they lost in. Afterward, Wilson was completely overcome by emotion at the end of the game and collapsed on the court in tears.

That is so heartbreaking. It gets even worse when you realize the journey the Aces have been on to get to this point.

The Aces have been right at the cusp for three years straight. They lost to the Mystics in the 2019 WNBA Semifinals, they lost to the Storm in the 2020 WNBA Finals and, now, the Mercury in the 2021 semis.

Getting to this point is so hard. And it feels like the Aces’ time is coming but it just hasn’t come yet.

When will it? We have no idea. But these are the moments that make great players. And judging by Wilson’s response here, she’ll do everything in her power to get her team over the hump.

They’ll be back.
