These two teams played each other last month with Michigan taking that game 77-54. Michigan comes into this game with a 13-1 record on the season with their only loss coming to the Minnesota Golden Gophers on January 16th.  This will be a tough test for the Wolverines with Wisconsin playing some of their best ball of the season and winning their last two of three.

Prediction: I think Michigan is the better team right now and think they could win the game by 3 points. It is tempting to take the 3 points and the Badgers as I do think this is a close one and having points is better than not in these particular games.

Five stats that defined Wisconsin’s dominant win over Michigan

The Badgers walk all over Michigan in Ann Arbor

After dealing with cancelling all football activities for over a week, two QB’s and at least 13 other players testing positive for COVID-19, and multiple staff members out with the virus, Wisconsin football did what they have done best in the Paul Chryst era: they just played.

The dominance started early and often in Wisconsin’s 49-11 win at the Big House over Michigan. A leave no doubt first quarter in which the Badgers held the football for 11:33 of the opening 15 minutes had UW on top 14-0 after one. The Badgers never looked back en route to a 2-0 start.

With true freshman making major impacts, Wisconsin dominating time of possession, and a scoreline that was reminiscent of last season’s win over the Maize and Blue, here are five stats that defined last night’s performance:

True freshman RB Jalen Berger’s sensational Wisconsin debut catches Jonathan Taylor’s attention

The next Badger RB from Jersey has made his presence felt

With Wisconsin missing key pieces in the RB room heading into Ann Arbor, true freshman RB Jalen Berger had his number called, and he didn’t disappoint. The Badgers were down both Garrett Groshek and Isaac Guerendo, and as a result the freshman from New Jersey had plenty of opportunity early and often.

With 13 carries for 77 yards and his first career touchdown run, Berger caught the attention of another Wisconsin RB from the Garden State.

Just moments after the 23-yard burst, Jonathan Taylor had a shoutout for the back from his home state on the east coast:

Wisconsin looks like they have their next talented RB from the state of New Jersey in the four-star 2020 recruit.

Why Wisconsin Will Win

And now the Badgers are rested – to put a positive spin on the last few weeks.

Michigan was able to run for a grand total of 13 yards against Indiana. It didn’t really try – there were only 18 carries – but it’s not like the struggling running game is going to get healthy again against this run D.

The Badgers had problems against Illinois when QB Brandon Peters ran, but the running backs didn’t do anything. On the other side of the ball, is the Graham Mertz show back on?

After hitting 20-of-21 passes with five scores against the Illini, now he gets to roll against a Michigan secondary that allowed 665 yards through the air over the last two games.

Why Michigan Will Win

Again, Wisconsin gave up a few rushing yards to Illinois, and they mostly came from the quarterback. Michigan’s Joe Milton has been good from the start with 869 yards and four scores through the air, and he ran for over 50 yards in each of the first two games.

He didn’t take off enough against Indiana, but that’s about to change.

Allow Milton to take off when the openings are there, don’t force things, and keep taking shots down the field. The Wisconsin secondary is full of veterans, but challenge it deep, and it’ll give up its share of big plays.

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan usually rises up and rocks when its back is against the wall, but that was supposed to happen last week against Indiana. This is still a physical team with enough talent and weapons to start playing like it’s supposed to, and there’s going to be a big question mark about what kind of shape Wisconsin is in.

However, this Wolverine team plays into Wisconsin’s style.

The Badgers held the ball for 43:28 against Illinois, and they’ll have it for at least 35 minutes in Ann Arbor. The Wisconsin running game might not be quite up to its normal snuff, but a good day from Mertz and a great day from the defense will make up for that.

Can Graham Mertz play this Saturday?

The answer to every Badger fans biggest question at the moment

With news this morning that Wisconsin football is trending towards playing against Michigan this weekend, the next big question at the front of all Badgers fans minds is can starting QB Graham Mertz play?

[lawrence-related id=24583]

The redshirt-freshman QB initially tested positive for COVID-19 on October 24 per the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, and the Big Ten has a strict 21-day policy for returning to play. With Mertz’s first test coming on October 24, this Friday, November 13, would be his 21st day in conference protocol. UW has not confirmed this timeline, but if the initial report about when Mertz tested positive is true it would hold up. He would be eligible to play in games starting then, and would be eligible to play in this Saturday’s Michigan game. Would that be likely without any practice time? Turns out Mertz can be on the field before Friday.

Per Big Ten protocol, if the Kansas native is cleared by a school cardiologist he can begin an “activity progression” 15 days after his initial positive, which would have been yesterday, November 8. If each step of this progression is cleared by a team physician, Mertz can be back at practice this Wednesday through Friday in preparation for the Wolverines.
