Wisconsin at Michigan State odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Tuesday’s Wisconsin at Michigan State odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The No. 14 Wisconsin Badgers (18-4, 9-3 Big Ten) visit the No. 17 Michigan State Spartans (17-5, 8-3) for a top-20 tussle Tuesday in East Lansing, Mich. The contest at the Breslin Center is slated to tip off at 7 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Wisconsin vs. Michigan State odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Wisconsin has been quite good on both sides of the ball, but UW isn’t a particularly strong shooting or field-goal stifling team. The Badgers do a lot of other things at a high level and are paced by the Big Ten’s third-leading scorer G Johnny Davis, who is averaging 20.6 points per game. UW is coming off a Saturday win over Penn State and is 3-1 over its last four games.

The Spartans play a slow-down style, but they have an efficient offense driven by top-notch perimeter shooting. Michigan State is back at home after playing four of its last five games on the road. MSU went 3-2 over those five games, the most recent was an 84-63 setback at Rutgers Saturday. And that stretch opened with an MSU triumph at Wisconsin Jan. 21.

Wisconsin at Michigan State odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Michigan State 68, Wisconsin 65

Money line

MSU plays at a slightly above-average pace, and that’s sometimes a problem for UW. And the Badgers can sometimes feast on opponents that don’t defend the perimeter well, but the Spartans do a fine 29.9% mark from beyond the arc.

Peg MSU as having a significant edge in rebounding and likely in getting to the foul line. Those were key factors in an 86-74 Spartans win in Madison, Wis., last month.

TAKE MICHIGAN STATE (-190).

Against the spread

Respecting a Wisconsin push in this second game, and there isn’t much of an MSU angle in the home/road figures. PASS.

Over/Under

Look for a lower free-throw count and better Wisconsin control of the pace this time around.

TAKE THE UNDER 139.5 (-110).

Wisconsin at Michigan State: Three things to know

  1. Wisconsin is coming off a 67-53 home victory vs. Nebraska in its Big Ten opener Tuesday. Senior G Brad Davison scored a team-high 15 points with a career-high 7 assists as the Badgers won a fourth in a row but came up just short in covering as 16-point favorites. Wisconsin trailed 33-32 with 14:25 to go before running off 16 consecutive points to take the lead for good. Through the first eight games, senior F Micah Potter leads Wisconsin in points (13.4 per game) and rebounds (7.3 per game).
  2. Michigan State lost its first game of the season in a surprising 79-65 setback at home to Northwestern in its conference opener Sunday. The Spartans, who were 7.5-point favorites, have now failed to cover the number 4 games in a row. Michigan State, which was ranked No. 4 last week, shot just 39% (26-for-67) from the field in the Northwestern upset. Through seven games, junior F Joey Hauser leads MSU with 12.1 PPG and 8.9 RPG.
  3. Wisconsin snapped an 8-game slide in the head-to-head series with Michigan State by pulling out a 64-63 victory at home Feb. 1 – the Badgers were 5-point underdogs and unranked, while the Spartans were No. 14 at the time. MSU won last season’s first contest 67-55 at home, covering the 9.5-point line.

Wisconsin at Michigan State: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Michigan State 65, Wisconsin 61

Money line (ML)

MICHIGAN STATE (+105) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. The Spartans have won their last 12 home games vs. Badgers. Wisconsin last won in East Lansing in 2004. Maybe, this line is a trap, but I’ll take my chances with that 12-0 trend.

Against the spread (ATS)

PASS since I’m backing the Spartans ML. However, if you prefer to take the points, feel free to skip the ML play and bet Michigan State +1.5 (-110).

ATS records: Wisconsin 3-4-1 | Michigan State 2-5

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 140.5 (-110) is the way to go. Wisconsin has one of the stingiest defenses in the country, allowing 57.5 PPG to rank 15th. The Badgers rank 14th in opponents’ field-goal percentage at 36.2%. Don’t be surprised if the combined score is Under 50 at halftime.

O/U records: Wisconsin 5-3 | Michigan State 4-3
