Penn State receiver announces retirement due to concussion concerns

Penn State wide receievr Winston Eubanks, a former transfer form Shippensburg, announced his retirement

Penn State seemingly lost one wide receiver to the transfer portal recently, and the depth may have taken one more hit just before the bowl game. Winston Eubanks has announced he is retiring from playing football as a result of concussion concerns.

“Due to consecutive severe concussions, my playing career has ended,” Eubanks said in a message posted to his Twitter account on Monday. “Thank you to everyone who has supported my football journey thus far.”

Eubanks, a redshirt senior, transferred to Penn State after a standout career for Division 2 Shippensburg. The Philadelphia native joined the Nittany Lions with the Class of 2021 after being a three-time All-PSAC receiver for the Red Raiders.

Eubanks was a deep reserve receiver option in his one season at Penn State. He had just one reception for two yards in an early-season matchup against Villanova. He made appearances in seven games this season.

Here are all 32 football players being recognized on Penn State’s senior day

Sean Clifford, Jahan Dotson, Jaquan Brisker, Journey Brown among those being honored at Penn State’s senior day

Penn State will play its final game in Beaver Stadium for the 2021 season on Saturday afternoon against Rutgers. And with this being the final home game of the season, it is the final opportunity for 32 players to step foot on the field inside Beaver Stadium for a game. Penn State will recognize 32 players for senior day festivities prior to kicking off against Rutgers on Saturday.

Of course, this is a slightly different type of senior day. Of the 32 players being recognized on Saturday afternoon, three players will be going through the senior day ceremony for a second time. Jaquan Brisker, Tariq Castro-Fields, and Ben Wilson were all recognized in Penn State’s senior day ceremony last season, but the NCAA allowed all players to take advantage of an extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on the entire sports world. So those three players opted for one more season in Happy Valley.

Of note, Penn State will recognize Sean Clifford, who could still potentially return for another season in 2022 (also a result of the NCAA’s decision on extra years of eligibility for all). Clifford isn’t the only player who can take advantage of that option, but there remains plenty of discussion on whether or not Clifford will return for another season.

Clifford’s top receiving target, Jahan Dotson, will also be recognized. Although Dotson could return for another season as well, there is no suggestion he will do so. Dotson is expected to be one of the top wide receiver prospects in the 2022 NFL draft, and some believe he could be a first-round pick.

Penn State will also recognize Journey Brown. Brown was forced to medically retire prior to the 2020 season after learning of a health concern that made continuing playing football a risky endeavor.

Here is the full list of players Penn State will honor during the senior day, as provided by Penn State’s athletics department;

  • Jaquan Brisker
  • Ellis Brooks

2021 Penn State depth chart projection: Wide receiver

After Jahan Dotson, what does Penn State have to offer at the wide receiver position in 2021? Projecting the depth chart…

It won’t take long to predict who the starting wide receivers will be in 2021 for the Penn State Nittany Lions. Penn State’s top three wide receivers from a year ago are back and figure to lock down the starting roles at the various receiver positions once again in 2021.

Among those leading receivers returning is Jahan Dotson. Dotson was the Big Ten’s leading receiver in 2020 with 884 receiving yards in nine games. Dotson also tied for the Big Ten lead in touchdown receptions (eight) with Purdue’s David Bell. Dotson is still sitting behind a handful of very talented wide receivers around the Big Ten on the national radar, perhaps because he benefitted from his Big Ten-leading stats by playing in more games than most other receivers around the conference. But Dotson is no player you want to overlook.

The 2020 season also saw the rise of Parker Washington as the team’s second-leading receiver. Washington is expected to be the second receiving option once again this fall, with KeAndre Lambert-Smith the most likely candidate to be the third starting receiver on the field for the Nittany Lions.

Finding playmakers has been a goal for the Penn State staff this offseason. Marquis Wilson has been given the opportunity to make some plays on offense, a luxury Penn State has the option of playing with considering the depth in the defensive secondary.

Here’s what the depth chart at wide receiver may look like for the Penn State offense this fall.

2021 Penn State Football Nittany Lions: Winston Eubanks

Can former Shippensburg WR Winston Eubanks leave his mark at Penn State?

Name: Winston Eubanks

Number: 89

Position: Wide receiver

Class: Redshirt Senior

Height: 6′-0″

Weight: 189

Hometown: Philadelphia, PA

High School: LaSalle College (transfer from Shippensburg)

Twitter: @WinstonEubanks

Overview

Perhaps there is a bit of a Shippensburg flavor to Penn State’s offense in 2021. Not only has Penn State added former Shippensburg offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich to the coaching staff, but the Nittany Lions have added one of the top receivers from the Red Raiders to the program in wide receiver Winston Eubanks.

Eubanks didn’t get a chance to play football in 2020 as the PSAC and Shippensburg took the season off due to the COVID pandemic. So you better believe Eubanks is itching to get back on a playing field and make something happen.

Eubanks was a three-time All-PSAC Eastern Division First Team player while at Shippensburg. He wasted little time leaving an impact with the Red Raiders, earning Freshman of the Year in the PSAC’s Eastern Division in 2017 and being recognized as an All-Region Second Team player by Football Gazette in 2017. He was also named a team captain for 2019 and 2020 (although Shippensburg did not play in 2020).

At Penn State, Eubanks brings some potential to be a sleeper playmaker with possible pro potential.

We’ll see just what kind of role Eubanks gets on Penn State’s roster, which is in need of someone to step up and make some plays in the passing game alongside Jahad Dotson. How long will Eubanks be flying under the radar?
