Ravens assistant coach Willie Taggart Ravens about Derrick Henry’s work ethic

Ravens running backs coach Willie Taggart says the work habits of running back Derrick Henry are “elite”

In March, the Baltimore Ravens signed running back Derrick Henry to a two-year deal to open up their free agency. Henry had long been rumored to join Baltimore dating back to last year’s trade deadline, and the two sides finally paired up.

Henry has been working to ensure he can get up to speed with his new team by the time the season begins. Ravens running backs coach Willie Taggart described Henry’s work habits as “elite,” saying he hates to do anything wrong.

“Elite. [Derrick Henry] is a guy that hates doing anything wrong. Like, it literally pisses him off to do anything wrong, and I’ve got to remind him, ‘Hey, Derrick, it’s practice. That’s why they call it practice. We’re going to make some mistakes at times, but just don’t make the same one twice.’ But he wants to be the best, and he wants to know everything that’s going on. When he’s not here, he’s texting me, asking me what we put in, or if he’s watching film, he’s asking me something about what’s on the film [and] what we’re doing. It’s been great, as a coach, to have a guy like that, that’s played this long, still wanting to play at a high level.”

Henry will join one of the best-rushing offenses in the NFL and hopes to be a force in the team’s backfield this season. He is still an incredibly dominant player and should work well next to quarterback Lamar Jackson.

Willie Taggart describes relationship between John Harbaugh, Jim Harbaugh

Ravens running back coach Willie Taggart discussed the relationship between John and Jim Harbaugh

The Baltimore Ravens hired head coach John Harbaugh in 2008, not knowing what to expect. They felt confident in their choice of the former Eagles special teams coach, and it has paid off in more ways than one.

Harbaugh comes from an incredible coaching family, including his brother, Jim, and father, Jack. Baltimore running backs coach Willie Taggart was asked to describe the relationship between John and Jim, and he went into great detail on his relationship with the Harbaugh family.

“Great. [John and Jim Harbaugh] are brothers.” (laughter) “But it’s great. I’m sure they both bounce things off each other. I mean, they both lean on ‘Papa Jack’ [Harbaugh], and they know they’ll get some good wisdom from him. I’ll tell you, for me, personally, I’ve been coaching for John, coaching for Jim, coaching for Jack … I feel like it’s Jack Harbaugh all over again. When I’m in meetings and listening to [John] talk, and just how we actually run our organization – how they do it here … I know it’s like that at Stanford – when we played at Stanford – and of course, when I was at Western [Kentucky] with Jack. So, it’s pretty cool to see that they’re following their dad’s footsteps but doing it in their own way, and I think they all are just special. I think they’re special coaches, and there’s a reason why they’re winners, and [there’s] a reason why they do it the way they do it. Not many are like them; they’re different. It’s not often that you see a coach that has the forcefulness and the sincerity behind it. Usually, you get one or the other from a coach, but if you get a coach that has both of them – and be elite at both – it’s pretty, pretty good.”

Both Harbaughs have good reputations and are known as highly bright football minds. The two will face off during the 2024 season when the Ravens face off against the Chargers, and it should be a great matchup filled with plenty of fireworks.

Ravens RB coach Willie Taggart is confident Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry will gel

Ravens running back coach Willie Taggart isn’t worried about quarterback Lamar Jackson and running back Derrick Henry gelling

The Baltimore Ravens signed Derrick Henry to a two-year, $16 million deal to bolster their running back room. He should be able to fill in and exceed what the team got from Gus Edwards and J.K Dobbins last year, as he still has plenty left in the tank.

When asked if it would be difficult for Henry to gel with quarterback Lamar Jackson, Baltimore running back coach Willie Taggart said it would be easy for the two to get RPOs down, among other things.

“I don’t think it’s very difficult. First of all, when we get the reps in practice, it makes it so much easier. With the RPOs [run-pass options], it all comes down to decisions; it’s more a decision for the quarterback than it is the running back. The running back is running the play that we call, and it’s just whether the quarterback wants to hand it off to you or not. So, [Derrick Henry] has just got to know his assignment and continue to do his assignment and let Lamar [Jackson] do what Lamar does, and he’ll be fine. But I don’t think it’s going to be difficult at all. It’s been great so far.”

It will take time for Jackson and Henry to get on the same page, especially as Henry learns a new system. However, chemistry can build fast, and the two stars should be able to establish plenty of it before the year begins.

Willie Taggart discusses where RB Derrick Henry will fit in Ravens scheme

Ravens running back coach Willie Taggart discusses where running back Derrick Henry will fit into the team’s scheme

The Baltimore Ravens are looking to continue their ground game dominance after a successful 2023 regular season of running the ball effectively. Running backs Gus Edwards and Keaton Mitchell led the charge last season alongside quarterback Lamar Jackson, but now free agent addition Derrick Henry will get the call to be Baltimore’s next big running back.

Ravens running backs coach Willie Taggart was asked about Henry’s fit in the team’s scheme, which runs more shotguns, and how he would factor in. Taggart said he questioned that fit until he arrived, but he’s been impressed with the way Henry moves at his size.

“You know what? Coming in, I … [After] watching the film in Tennessee, that was a concern; like, ‘We’re in the [shotgun], and we run from the gun, and how would Derrick [Henry] be in it?’ And I’m not going to lie, I questioned that, until he got here, and [I saw] the big man move his feet, and I’m like, ‘Woah.’ It’s really impressive for a guy that size to move the way he does. And he’s got, not necessarily Zay Flowers’ feet, but from a big guy, he’s pretty swifty on his feet and [has] great vision and all. But seeing him do it from the gun, I don’t have any … I don’t think we’ll have any problem doing it. And, we’ll also be under center. We do some things under center, as well. But Derrick is an athlete. He’s a big athlete, and I don’t think he’ll have any problem with anything we ask him to do. If we want him to go out at receiver, I think Derrick would go out there and get that done, as well.” (Reporter: “Return kickoff?”) “He’ll do that, as well, if that’s what we need him to do. I wouldn’t want to be the one to tackle him – from that standpoint – as he gets going.”

Henry is known for his hulking size but also has deceptive speed and agility in his game. Baltimore is adding a multi-dimensional player to their offensive unit, and it should fit right into what the team tries to do.

Ravens RB coach Willie Taggart on AFC Championship loss: ‘We were ticked off’

Ravens RB coach Willie Taggart said the team was ticked off after their AFC Championship loss

The Baltimore Ravens suffered an agonizing defeat to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC Championship game this past season. The 17-10 loss had the players, coaches, and fans reeling, especially after such a strong regular season that saw the team go 13-4 overall.

When asked about the game itself, Baltimore running backs coach Willie Taggart was honest in his answer, saying that the team was “ticked off”. However, he mentioned how the team is now locked into this season, and will do what they can to win a championship in the now.

“I think it was kind of like everybody else; we were ticked off. We were a game before the Super Bowl, and it didn’t happen for us, so like every other position, we were upset [and] disappointed. And I guess, after the game – after we got back – we kind of locked into this year, now, and seeing if we can do our part to help our football team win a championship.”

The Ravens have a major opportunity this season to be able to win, especially with still having so much star power on all three sides of the ball. Baltimore will still be widely regarded as a Super Bowl contender, and can right their wrong with a championship.

Ravens hire former FAU HC Willie Taggart as RB coach

The Ravens hired Willie Taggart to be their running backs coach

The Baltimore Ravens’ offseason started off with a lot of interviews for the team’s offensive coordinator position, which resulted in the hiring of former Georgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken. Now the team is trying to figure out how to get quarterback Lamar Jackson in the fold for a long-term contract, or else a franchise tag or trade could be the outcome of the situation.

It was reported by Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network and later announced by the team that the Ravens hired Willie Taggart to be their new running backs coach. Taggart now gets to coach with both Harbaugh brothers as he was the running backs coach when Jim Harbaugh was the head coach at Stanford.

The move to Baltimore will mark the first NFL coaching opportunity for Taggart, who is a long-time college coach. Taggart was rumored to be a candidate for the Ravens’ offensive coordinator position, and was most recently the head coach of Florida Atlantic University from 2020-2022.
