He wasn’t in Ann Arbor for long, but now he’s headed out east.

Last fall, the grad transfer dominoes appeared to start falling when Michigan football secured the commitment of former LSU tackle-turned-Louisiana Tech starter Willie Allen, who had to wait months before he could actually get on campus and start getting ingratiated into the system. However, once he arrived, he didn’t last.

Allen partook in spring ball, but seemingly never earned that yearned for starting role. With Andrew Stueber securing the right tackle position where Allen was slotted, he announced that he would be entering the NCAA transfer portal and look for a starting opportunity elswhere.

On Saturday, it was revealed that Allen is heading to UMass where he’ll finish his career.

Allen may have only wore a winged helmet in practice, but at UMass he’ll get the opportunity he wasn’t able to secure in Ann Arbor.

It appears to be over before it ever even began.

Michigan football had received a pleasant surprise last fall with grad transfer Willie Allen announcing that he was coming to Ann Arbor to play offensive line for the Wolverines. Allen arrived for winter conditioning and spring ball, but reports indicated that the former LSU and Louisiana Tech offensive tackle was behind Andrew Stueber at his anticipated right tackle position.

With his years in college football dwindling, Allen will not be taking his time to ensure he gets an opportunity to start somewhere, as he has entered the NCAA transfer portal. The news was first reported by the Detroit Free Press’ Rainer Sabin.

Former LSU offensive tackle Willie Allen transfers to Michigan

Willie Allen was a four-star recruit for the LSU Tigers all the way back in 2016. After spending just one season in Baton Rouge

Willie Allen was a four-star recruit for the LSU Tigers all the way back in 2016. After spending just one season in Baton Rouge, Allen transferred to Tyler Junior College in Texas.

Allen, who played his high school football at John Curtis High in New Orleans, originally wanted to transfer to TCU, however, LSU reportedly blocked that potential move.

Allen played one year at Tyler Junior College before transferring to Louisiana Tech, where he was until he announced his intention to enter the transfer portal earlier this week.

On Friday, the 6-foot-6, 343-pound offensive lineman announced his final college destination, via his Twitter account.

Allen opted out of the 2020 season two weeks ago and entered the transfer portal as a graduate transfer. He will enroll at Michigan in January and play for the Wolverines in 2021.

At one point, behemoth 6-foot-7.5, 343-pound New Orleans (LA) John Curtis four-star offensive tackle Willie Allen was not just committed, but enrolled at LSU. Rated the No. 183 prospect in the country, Allen redshirted his freshman year, but opted to transfer before his sophomore season.

Reportedly, LSU blocked his transfer choice of TCU, and Allen ended up going the junior college route before ending up at Louisiana Tech. A starter for La. Tech, he put up solid grades in both run and pass blocking per PFF. He was expected to return as a starter, but he surprised those in Ruston by opting out of the 2020 season due to COVID-19 concerns. But he then changed course, entering the NCAA transfer portal on Oct. 12.

And now, he’s a Wolverine, having announced on Thursday evening via Twitter that he’s coming to Ann Arbor.
