Tennessee ‘consistent at tackling’ through three games in 2024

William Inge details Tennessee being consistent at tackling through three games in 2024.

Tennessee’s defense has recorded 171 tackles through three games during the 2024 season.

Will Brooks and Edrees Farooq (10) lead the Vols in tackles, while Arion Carter, Keenan Pili and Jakobe Thomas have recorded nine tackles each.

Ahead of Week 4 against Oklahoma, first-year linebackers coach William Inge evaluated Tennessee’s tackling through three games.

“I think we’ve been fairly consistent at our tackling, and again, often you’re going to be in a battle before you really see how it is, but we’ve definitely been effective thus far,” Inge said. “You only know how good you are off of your last performance, so we still have to keep our thumb on it going into the next game.

“Once we get done with one game, we turn the page and we move on to teaching again because the skill level is going to be better, obviously, this week and we still have to go out there and execute and do our job.”

Arion Carter details accountability within linebacker unit

Sophomore linebacker Arion Carter discusses fall camp after Tennessee’s third practice.

Sophomore linebacker Arion Carter enters his second season at Tennessee in 2024.

The 6-foot-1, 234-pound sophomore appeared in eight games and missed the final five games of the season after shoulder surgery. He recorded 17 tackles, one tackle for a loss and one pass deflection last season.

Carter met with media following Tennessee’s third practice during fall training camp on Saturday. He discussed the unit under first-year linebackers coach William Inge.

“I think it starts with him holding us accountable,” Carter said. “He is a great coach. He wants to see us be the best every single day, day in and day out. I took that to heart as far as being accountable, holding other guys accountable and then holding us accountable as a team and as a group.

“You know we have to drive the bus on defense and the team in general. I feel like just us doing (that), our IQ has skyrocketed from last year to this year. I feel like we are just taking different steps along the way. The only way from here is up.”

Carter went to Tennessee from Smyrna High School in Smyrna, Tennessee.

“Because No. 1, I know the history, the tradition and the branding that this place has with that Power T and what it all represents,” Inge said. “The recruiting that you can be able to do here, but also, I am a fan of coach (Josh) Heupel as well. Being able to see the things that he has done with his background and his record, and then, when we got to talking.

“I think, I knew that I could have a big impact here in the group with respect to my position, helping the defensive staff, the overall staff, helping our football team, and that was something that was important to me.”
