Chiefs legend Will Shields to be drum honoree vs. Jaguars in AFC divisional round

The #Chiefs have tabbed Pro Football Hall of Fame RG Will Shields for their drum honoree against the #Jaguars in the AFC divisional round.

The Kansas City Chiefs have selected their drum honoree for the AFC divisional round game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Pro Football Hall of Fame RG Will Shields will return to Arrowhead Stadium to serve as drum leader on the GEHA drum deck on Saturday. Last year, Shields served as an honorary coin toss captain in the AFC Championship Game, but this time around he gets to lead the team and fans in their pregame tradition.

A former third-round draft pick out of the University of Nebraska by Kansas City in 1993, Shields played for 14 seasons with the Chiefs, starting 223 games during his career. He earned 12 consecutive Pro Bowl selections from 1995 through 2006, with two consecutive First-Team All-Pro selections in 2002 and 2003. He’s one of the few players in Kansas City to have earned the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year Award (2003).

There’s perhaps no better player to help set the tone for this playoff matchup. Shields played his last career regular season game against the Jaguars in Week 17 of 2006, winning the game 35-30. He was one of the NFL’s best interior offensive linemen for his entire playing career and should have no problem getting the raucous crowd at Arrowhead Stadium fired up before the first playoff game this year.

Other pregame entertainment includes international award-winning recording artist Michelle Brooks-Thompson singing the national anthem ahead of kickoff. The Kansas City Kansas Police Department will present the colors during the anthem. There will also be a flyover conducted by four F-16s from the 138th Fighter Wing of the Oklahoma Air National Guard, weather permitting as always.

The team also announced that Atlanta-based rapper Lil Jon would be performing at halftime during the game.

Chiefs legend Will Shields named to 2023 East-West Shrine Bowl Advisory Team

The @ShrineBowl has added #Chiefs HOF RG Will Shields to their 2023 Advisory Team.

A former member of the Kansas City Chiefs will help advise the East-West Shrine Bowl in 2023.

Pro Football Hall of Famer Will Shields is one of eight named to the East-West Shrine Bowl Advisory Team for 2023. The group is comprised of former NFL executives (Amy Trask, Scot McCloughan, Greg Gabriel), players (Shields, Bucky Brooks, Mark May), plus an NFL draft-centric media member (Dane Brugler) and a premiere QB coach (Jordan Palmer). Here is a description of what this group will seek to accomplish in 2023:

This exemplary group will advise the #ShrineBowl team on player and NFL personnel experience, creating opportunities in the industry, awareness on key initiatives, and on making it a best-in-class event!”

Shields is a unique fit for this role because he knows exactly how impactful this particular All-Star game can be for a college football player. Shields played in the 1993 East-West Shrine Bowl, where the former University of Nebraska star received his most exposure with NFL teams. The only team that he had a meeting with at the game ended up being the team that drafted him and the team where he spent his entire illustrious NFL career.

The Chiefs selected Shields in the third round of the 1993 NFL draft and he’d go on to start 223 consecutive games for the team over the course of 14 NFL seasons. He was selected to 12 consecutive Pro Bowls, with seven career All-Pro honors and he was named to the NFL’s 2000s All-Decade team. He was named Walter Payton Man of the Year in 2003 for his work with the “Will to Succeed” Foundation. In 2011, Shields was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. In 2012, he was inducted into the Chiefs’ Ring of Honor. In 2020, the Shrine Bowl selected Shields for their Hall of Fame.

Chiefs Hall of Fame guard Will Shields mentoring Missouri OL Trystan Colon-Castillo

Trystan Colon-Castillo was a robust physical force on the offensive line while at Missouri. He spoke with Chiefs Wire contributor Ed Easton Jr. regarding working with Will Shields.

The 2020 NFL Combine often bridges the gap between past star players to the potential new crop being scouted through the week. University of Missouri center Trystan Colon-Castillo is not only a prospect from the school; he’s also a native of Missouri. He was one of many offensive linemen from Mizzou to be mentored by Kansas City Chiefs legend Will Shields.

Colon-Castillo was a robust physical force on the offensive line while at Missouri. Now he’s looking to make a splash in the NFL. He spoke with Chiefs Wire contributor Ed Easton Jr. regarding advice during the Combine process and working with Shields.

“I’d probably reach out to any of the Missouri guys they will always hit me back if I need it,” said Colon-Castillo. “Just through the Combine, our group mentor is Will Shields, and he made that known from the beginning if we need anything to reach out talk to him just like that. So there’s no doubt that there are definitely resources out there whenever I need them.”

Shields played all fourteen of his seasons in the NFL for the Chiefs without missing a single game. The 12-time Pro Bowler and 3-time All-Pro has been inducted into both the College Football and Pro Football Hall of Fame. Shields has a training facility in the Kansas City area, where he works with NFL hopefuls along the offensive line. He even trained former Chiefs OL Kahlil McKenzie during the 2019 offseason.

The young offensive linemen from Mizzou are learning from one of the greatest to ever play the position. Colon-Castillio also spoke about being a Missouri native and understanding the impact of a Super Bowl championship for the state.

I know it’s big for the state of Missouri,” said Colon-Castillo. “I have a lot of teammates from Kansas City who are fans of the team.”
