Former Jaguars OL Will Richardson Jr. arrested on DUI charge

Free agent offensive lineman Will Richardson Jr. was arrested on DUI charges Friday, two days after he was cut by the Jaguars.

Two days after he was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars on Wednesday, free agent offensive lineman Will Richardson Jr. was arrested on a DUI charge early Friday morning, St. John’s County records show.

Richardson, 26, was booked for a second-degree misdemeanor after refusing to submit for a DUI test after a traffic stop, according to police. Records show he was booked into a St. John’s County jail at 2:42 a.m. on Friday and released 1:41 p.m. that afternoon.

The 2018 fourth-round pick played in 44 games over the last three seasons with the Jaguars and made five starts. Last season, Richardson scored a touchdown when he fell on a fumble in the end zone against the New York Jets.

Richardson entered training camp buried on the depth chart behind offensive tackles Cam Robinson, Jawaan Taylor, and Walker Little. The Jaguars opted to keep just those three tackles along with three guards and two centers when the team cut down the roster to 53 players.

During his freshman year at North Carolina State, Richardson was arrested and charged with DWI.

Jaguars place 2 key players on reserve lists

Will Richardson Jr. will be shut down for the remainder of the season, while safety Andrew Wingard could miss Sunday’s game.

Jacksonville has two more difficult matchups before the 2021 season comes to a merciful end, and it will have to navigate those without several players available. On Thursday, the team placed offensive lineman Will Richardson Jr. on the injured reserve list while also placing starting safety Andrew Wingard on the Reserve/COVID-19 list.

Richardson spent most of the season as one of the team’s primary backups along the offensive line, but he was thrust into the starting lineup in last week’s loss to the New York Jets after Ben Bartch was placed on the Reserve/COVID-19 list. He scored a touchdown on a fumble recovery in that one, but he missed practice on Wednesday with a finger injury and has now been shut down for the remainder of the season.

Wingard, meanwhile, has started every game at safety this season but could potentially be out for Sunday’s game on the road against the New England Patriots. If he is vaccinated and asymptomatic, he can return after submitting two negative tests in a 24-hour period. However, if he is unvaccinated, he will have to wait at least five days to return, per the NFL’s updated protocol that reflects the latest recommendations from the CDC.

If Wingard is unable to go, Daniel Thomas and rookie Andre Cisco will likely start at safety. Cisco got the first start of his career last week, and both saw significant playing time, faring decently well.

One other piece of news the Jaguars announced on Thursday was the placement of practice squad running back B.J. Emmons, who was signed earlier this month, on the practice squad/COVID-19 list.

Trevor Lawrence fumble turns into Jags TD for 306-pound Will Richardson Jr.

A Trevor Lawrence fumble became an offensive lineman’s dream for the Jaguars

Trevor Lawrence tried to match Zach Wilson with a running touchdown as the Jacksonville Jaguars played the New York Jets on Sunday at MetLife Stadium.

It didn’t quite pan out as put into the game plan. The No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL draft coughed up the football and it headed for the end zone.

On the spot, however, was 6-foot-6, 306-pound Will Richardson Jr, who covered the football in the end zone for a touchdown.

The happy moment was short-lived for Jacksonville as on the ensuing kickoff, Braxton Berrios took it 102 yards for a New York Jets score.
