Report: LSU hiring director of player personnel away from Ole Miss

LSU has reportedly pulled another off-field staffer away from Lane Kiffin and Ole Miss.

LSU has reportedly made a key hire for its football personnel department.

The Tigers are hiring [autotag]Preston Tiffany[/autotag] away from Ole Miss, where he served as director of player personnel, to take over the same role in Baton Rouge. The news was first reported by Football Scoop.

Tiffany will join [autotag]Austin Thomas[/autotag], a former chief of staff in Oxford who also left Ole Miss this offseason to take a similar role for the Tigers. Tiffany replaces outgoing director of player personnel [autotag]Will Redmond[/autotag], who left to take a job at Auburn.

A graduate of South Carolina, Redmond has worked in the Ole Miss personnel department since 2020 in multiple roles. He became the director of player personnel in 2023.

LSU to name former Ole Miss chief of staff Austin Thomas senior associate AD for football administration

Austin Thomas is returning to LSU after spending two seasons in a high-level role at Ole Miss.

It was reported on Friday that LSU would be hiring away [autotag]Austin Thomas[/autotag] after two years as the football chief of staff at Ole Miss, and now we now what role he is going to occupy in Baton Rouge.

On Saturday, The Advocate’s Wilson Alexander reported that Thomas will be the senior associate athletics director for football administration. This will be his fourth stint at LSU after he was previously a director of player personnel (2013-16) and general manager (2016-17, 2020-21).

He has also served in similar roles at USC, Baylor and Texas A&M, and he began his career as a defensive quality control coach and recruiting and personnel assistant at his alma mater Tennessee.

It’s more shakeup to LSU’s off-field football staff after former director of player personnel [autotag]Will Redmond[/autotag] left to become the general manager at Auburn earlier this week.

Report: LSU hiring Ole Miss chief of staff to join football player personnel department

Austin Thomas is back for his fourth stint at LSU after serving as the chief of staff under Lane Kiffin the last two years.

[autotag]Austin Thomas[/autotag] is making his return to Baton Rouge after two years as the chief of staff under Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss. The news was first reported by Wilson Alexander of The Advocate.

The news comes in the wake of a shakeup to LSU’s player personnel department as its director, [autotag]Will Redmond[/autotag], left to take a similar role at Auburn. While Thomas’ job at LSU isn’t yet clear, it seems fair to assume that he will replace Redmond.

Thomas previously served as the general manager under [autotag]Ed Orgeron[/autotag] from 2016-18 and again in 2021. Between those stints, he served in similar roles at Texas A&M and later Baylor.

He wasn’t retained when [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] took over after the 2021 season, but he’ll become yet another staffer from that group who is returning to Baton Rouge after two years away.

Thomas began his career at his alma mater, Tennessee, serving as a recruiting and personnel assistant and later as a defensive quality control coach. He joined USC as an assistant director of player personnel in 2010 before leaving to direct that department at LSU in 2013.

He briefly returned to USC in 2016 to serve as an assistant athletic director for football, but Oregon brought him back when he got the full-time job.

Report: Auburn expected to hire LSU director of player personnel Will Redmond to same role

Will Redmond has served as LSU’s director of player personnel since 2021.

While LSU reportedly completed its on-field coaching staff on Wednesday with the hiring of Tulane’s [autotag]Slade Nagle[/autotag] as the next tight ends coach, it now apparently has a key off-field role to fill.

On Wednesday, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Auburn was hiring LSU director of player personnel [autotag]Will Redmond[/autotag] to serve in the same role. A native of Franklin, Tennessee, and a graduate of Tennessee in 2013, Redmond has been on staff at LSU since 2021.

He previously served as the director of recruiting at Kansas and director of player personnel at Middle Tennessee State before joining LSU’s staff, where he was retained during the transition from [autotag]Ed Orgeron[/autotag] to [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag].

Now, Redmond is joining an Auburn staff that saw quite a bit of shakeup after the team finished 6-7 in the first year under coach Hugh Freeze.

Auburn hires Will Redmond to serve as GM of player personnel

Redmond joins the Auburn staff following a successful stint at LSU.

Auburn head coach [autotag]Hugh Freeze[/autotag] is continuing to revamp his coaching staff ahead of the 2024 season, most recently hiring a solid off-the-field addition.

Matt Zenitz of 247Sports reports that Auburn has hired former LSU director of player personnel [autotag]Will Redmond[/autotag] to serve in an off-the-field role. Christian Clemente of Auburn Undercover reports that the position will be “General Manager of Player Personnel.”

According to LSU Athletics’ website, Redmond was responsible for maintaining recruiting boards, identifying potential prospects, and monitoring prospects throughout the year. He held the position of director of player personnel for three seasons. During that time, LSU pieced together three top-10 signing classes including the current 2024 class that ranks No. 9 nationally.

Cooper Petagna of 247Sports shares some of the duties that Redmond will take on at Auburn in a recent interview with Auburn Undercover.

“A person in his newly formed GM position is now more important than ever to the success of a college football program, not only when it comes to talent acquisition and retention but to leading and directing an essential arm of the program as it pertains to NIL efforts,” Petagna said. “With player movement at an all-time high, it pays to have forward-thinking minds off the field that can keep your program nimble when it comes adapting in this age of college football.”

The hiring of Redmond is the most recent hire made to Freeze’s revamped staff. Before Redmond’s hiring, Freeze added offensive coordinator [autotag]Derrick Nix[/autotag], and co-defensive coordinator [autotag]Charles Kelly[/autotag]. [autotag]Kent Austin[/autotag] has also been promoted to quarterbacks coach.

LSU’s Will Redmond named Player Personnel Director of the Year

A key LSU support staffer was given a high honor on Tuesday.

LSU’s [autotag]Will Redmond[/autotag] was given the 2022 Player Personnel Director of the Year award by Football Scoop.

The award, presented by AstroTurf, is decided by prior winners.

Redmond joined LSU in 2021 and was a key piece of Brian Kelly’s rebuild. LSU found success in the transfer portal these last few years and Redmond’s work had a lot to do with that.

LSU’s roster was in dire straits when Kelly took over. Poor roster management from the previous regime and attrition brought on by the coaching staff left LSU’s scholarship total well below where it needed to be.

The expectation was LSU would need a few years to rebuild, but the Tigers have reloaded to begin 2023 ranked No. 5 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll and AP Poll.

Kelly and Redmond are working on their second straight top 10 class at LSU. If you count the transfer portal additions, it’s Kelly’s third consecutive top-10 class.

Redmond did a good job keeping Louisiana guys home too. LSU is expected to sign at least eight of the top 10 players in the state this cycle.

Brian Kelly hires off-field staffer from Liberty

Jeremiah Bogan is set to become the assistant director of player personnel. He was previously the director of scouting for the Flames.

LSU completed its player personnel staff for the football team on Sunday with the hiring of [autotag]Jeremiah Bogan[/autotag] to serve as the assistant director of player personnel, according to a report from Football Scoop.

Bogan comes from Liberty, where he previously served as the director of scouting. He joined new coach Jamey Chadwell in January after previously working in the recruiting departments at Pittsburgh and Georgia Tech, according to his LinkedIn profile.

He will help fill the gap left by [autotag]Corey Phillips[/autotag], who left his role as associate director of player personnel to take over the player personnel department under Deion Sanders at Colorado.

LSU promoted [autotag]Mike Ferrera[/autotag] to serve as the associate under player personnel director [autotag]Will Redmond[/autotag], and Bogan completes the trio as the assistant.

LSU staffer leaves to follow Deion Sanders to Colorado

Sanders hired LSU’s Corey Phillips as the next director of player personnel in Boulder.

Deion Sanders’ staff is coming together at Colorado, and it involves the hiring of an LSU staffer.

LSU’s associate director of player personnel Corey Phillips will become Colorado’s director of player personnel, according to On3.

Phillips came to LSU from NC State and spent one year with the Tigers. Phillips spent a long time coaching high school ball in Tennessee and is well-connected in the south. It’s a good hire for a Colorado program that has to go outside of the state to find elite talent.

LSU’s director of player personnel [autotag]Will Redmond[/autotag] remains with the Tigers, as does assistant director of player personnel [autotag]Mike Ferrara[/autotag].

Redmond was hired in 2021 and was one of the few holdovers from the [autotag]Ed Orgeron[/autotag] era. It’s unclear whether LSU will just promote Ferrara into the associate role or if [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] will look elsewhere to fill the position.

With the volatility the transfer portal brings to rosters, these administrative roles are now critical pieces of programs.

Texans elevate DBs Cobi Francis, Will Redmond from practice squad vs. Dolphins

The Houston Texans activated defensive backs Will Redmond and Cobi Francis from the practice squad.

The Houston Texans announced their two standard practice squad elevations ahead of their Week 12 matchup with the Miami Dolphins Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Central Time at Hard Rock Stadium.

The Texans activated both Francis and Redmond from the practice squad last week as part of their standard elevations.

Francis did not log any stats against Washington in the 23-10 loss at NRG Stadium, although he did play eight special team snaps. Redmond produced one special teams tackle for Houston.

Redmond is a former San Francisco 49ers 2016 third-round pick, who played 31 games with the Green Bay Packers from 2018-20 and then three games with the Indianapolis Colts in 2021.

Texans made a flurry of practice squad transactions on Tuesday

The #Texans made a series of transactions with their practice squad on Tuesday that could have implications in the future

The Houston Texans parted ways with an up-and-coming player on their practice squad on Tuesday afternoon, releasing rookie receiver Michael Young. The move comes after the team claimed running back Eno Benjamin off waivers earlier in the day.

In addition to Benjamin, who will be placed on the team’s 53-man roster following the team’s decision to claim him, Houston signed two players to their practice squad, receiver Alex Bachman and defensive back Will Redmond.

Bachman played his college ball at Wake Forest and is in his second season as a professional after entering the league as an undrafted free agent. He spent time with the Los Angeles Rams and New York Giants in recent seasons before eventually finding his way to Houston on Tuesday.

Redmond, on the other hand, was once a highly touted prospect in the 2016 draft and came into the NFL as a third-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers by way of Mississippi State. Following his release from the 49ers in 2017, he bounced around from the Kansas City Chiefs to the Green Bay Packers before eventually settling at his last stop with the Indianapolis Colts.

As practice squad prospects, both players will need to fight for their chance to get elevated to the Texans’ active roster and see meaningful time on the field this season. For now, the limited action they’ll see in helping Houston prepare for their opponents will serve as an extended tryout of sorts to give Lovie Smith and his crew of coaches a chance to evaluate what they might bring to their football team.

No opportunity should be taken lightly for Bachman or Redmond, though, as the winds of change are in the air in Houston as a rebuild in 2023 may provide them the necessary occasion to become role players in what promises to be a new-look Texans squad. If they can make the right impression through the end of the season, both players could find themselves with steady work ahead of next year’s opening kickoff.
