Milwaukee looks set to return to action after their series with the St. Louis Cardinals was canceled following St. Louis announcing several cases of COVID-19 among its personnel. The White Sox enjoyed their time on the field Sunday, pummeling the Kansas City Royals 9-2.
White Sox at Brewers: Projected starting pitchers
LHP Carlos Rodon at LHP Brett Anderson
Rodon’s first outing of 2020, his first start since May 1 of last season, was rough (five earned runs in 3 2/3 innings), and the southpaw may struggle to reach five frames in this one; he’s still trying to round into form after Tommy John surgery.
- On the bright side, even in that poor showing, Rodon did show a four-seam fastball velocity (93.1 mph) at an average of 1 mph more than 2019, which suggests he may be close to rounding back into form after TJS. (Needs that control to come through, though.)
Anderson’s return from an injured list stint, caused by a blister on his left index finger, has been delayed a bit due to the Cardinals’ health issues, but he’s in line to make his 2020 debut.
- In 2019, Anderson reflected his low-strikeout, high-grounder approach, dancing his way to a 3.89 ERA in 31 starts despite fanning just 90 batters in 176 innings for the Oakland Athletics.

Prediction
White Sox 6, Brewers 4
Moneyline (ML)
- White Sox -106
- Brewers -106
Where’s the incentive here? PASS.
Run line/Against the spread (ATS)
- White Sox -1 (+115)
- Brewers +1 (-139)
Normally, I’d proceed with caution with run lines that don’t have a “.5” at the end.
Still, the White Sox have rattled off a .347 wOBA so far, good for fifth in the majors. CF Luis Robert’s early emergence (.351/.385/.595 with two homers in 39 plate appearances) has bolstered an already dangerous lineup for a Chicago club widely considered a sleeper 2020 contender.
Meanwhile, Milwaukee has limped so far in the batter’s box (.289 wOBA, 25th), while LF Christian Yelich has sputtered (.037/.071/.148 in 28 plate appearances). Also, Cain, one of their crucial bats, just chose to forego playing the rest of this trying season.
I like neither pitcher for this duel, but I’ll lean toward the White Sox -1 (+115) because that at least offers more than a double-up profit.

Over/Under (O/U)
- Over 9.5 (-110)
- Under 9.5 (-110)
These two offenses strike out a lot but also score in bunches, their slow 2020 stars notwithstanding. Given Anderson’s penchant for allowing contact and Rodon’s durability concerns, the offenses should be lighting up.
Look for Chicago’s lineup, headlined by rising prospect Luis Robert, and the Brewers, despite Braun’s absence, to fuel the OVER 9.5 (-110).
