Chiefs to wear white-on-white uniforms against Chargers on Sunday night

The #Chiefs are busting out their white-on-white uniform combination for Week 11’s matchup with the #Chargers on “Sunday Night Football.”

The Kansas City Chiefs are busting out a fabled alternate uniform color combination for Week 11.

The Chiefs announced on Friday that they’ll be wearing their white-on-white uniform combination for “Sunday Night Football” against the Los Angeles Chargers. The Chiefs wore it twice last season, including against the Los Angeles Chargers on “Thursday Night Football” in Week 15.

While the jersey combination is a bit of a fan favorite, the white-on-white look has a bit of a tainted past in Kansas City. The Chiefs wore the uniform combination back in Super Bowl I when they lost to the Green Bay Packers. Losing that game prompted a superstitious Hank Stram to ban the white-on-white uniform combination and it stayed that way for over 20 years.

Marty Schottenheimer brought the white-on-white jerseys back in 1989 and they’ve worn them occasionally ever since. They’ve worn them three times during the Patrick Mahomes era (Rams 2018, Raiders 2021 and Chargers 2021), busting them out for prime-time games. Each of those three times the Chiefs have scored no fewer than 34 points and no greater than 51.

Let’s hope the white-on-white combination paves way for another high-scoring game against the Chargers. Los Angeles has scored no more than 23 points in a single game since Week 4. This AFC West matchup could be the difference between an insurmountable lead on the division for Kansas City or providing Los Angeles the spark they need to claw their way back into the race.

Chiefs to wear white-on-white uniforms against Chargers

For the second time this season, the #Chiefs will wear their white-on-white uniform combination.

The Kansas City Chiefs are busting out a fabled alternate uniform color combination, one that they resurrected earlier this season.

The Chiefs teased the return of their white-on-white uniform combination during the offseason, bringing it back for their 41-14 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders on “Sunday Night Football” in Week 10. Before that, they’d last worn this uniform combination during 2018’s “Monday Night Football” showdown against the Los Angeles Rams. The team is also wearing their throwback grey facemasks, something they haven’t done since 2019.

The white-on-white has a bit of a tainted past in Kansas City. The Chiefs wore the uniform combination back in Super Bowl I, a game where they were defeated by the Green Bay Packers. Losing that game prompted a superstitious Hank Stram to ban the white-on-white uniform combination and it stayed that way for over 20 years.

Marty Schottenheimer brought the white-on-white jerseys back in 1989 and they’ve worn them occasionally ever since. During recent years, they’ve saved them for primetime games for the most part with recent appearances on Monday night and Sunday night. This time they’re breaking the uniform combination out for Thursday night.

The two times the team has worn the white-on-white uniforms during the Patrick Mahomes era the team has scored over 40 points (51 in 2018 vs. Rams, 41 in 2021 vs. Raiders). Let’s hope the white-on-white combination paves way for another high-scoring game on “Thursday Night Football.” It’s perhaps the most important game of the season and the team will need to be at their best if they’re to defeat the Los Angeles Chargers on the road tonight.

Chiefs to wear white-on-white uniforms against Raiders

The #Chiefs are bringing back their white-on-white uniform combo against the #Raiders on Sunday Night Football.

The Kansas City Chiefs are busting out a fabled uniform color combination that they haven’t worn since the 2018 NFL season.

The Chiefs teased the return of their white-on-white uniform combination during the 2021 NFL offseason, and now they’re bringing it back for a pivotal AFC West matchup. You have to go back to 2018’s Monday Night Football thriller against the Los Angeles Rams to find the last time they wore the white-on-white uniform combination.

The white-on-white look has a mixed history in Kansas City. The Chiefs famously wore the uniform combination back in Super Bowl I. When the team lost that game, it prompted a superstitious Hank Stram to ban the white-on-white look. For over 20 years the uniform color combination was shelved by the team. Kansas City didn’t wear their white-on-white jerseys again until Marty Schottenheimer brought them back in 1989.

The Chiefs didn’t end up winning the last game they played in this uniform combination, but it was one of the most memorable losses in franchise history. The 54-51 loss to the Rams was the third-highest scoring game in NFL history.

Funny enough, the last time Kansas City won wearing this uniform combination was against the then-Oakland Raiders in Week 6 of the 2016 NFL season. Chiefs QB Alex Smith had a mistake-free day, but he didn’t score a touchdown. Instead, RB Spencer Ware set his career-high in rushing yards with 131 yards, also scoring six points during the 26-10 win.

Let’s hope the white-on-white combination gives the team the good luck they need in order to fetch a division win in hostile territory on “Sunday Night Football.”
