Perennial powerhouse Kentucky is fighting for the top spot in the SEC and will face-off against Tennessee on the road for the first time this season. While it may seem like a layup win for the Wildcats, the team hasn’t won at Thompson-Boling Arena since 2015. Will the cycle be broken?

Kentucky vs. Tennessee

Kentucky (17-5, 7-2) got an 80-72 win on Tuesday against Mississippi State. While plenty has been said about Kentucky’s big name players, EJ Montgomery had a breakout game with 12 points and eight rebounds. It marked his third double-digit scoring game of the season and first since Dec. 8. His eight rebounds were the most since a Dec. 18 game against Utah. The team was still led by forward Nick Richards, who had a double-double, scoring 27 points (25 in the second half) and collecting 11 rebounds.

The Volunteers (13-9, 5-4) just barely got a win against Alabama on Tuesday, winning 69-68 thanks to a strong second half performance. Before the win, Tennessee was on a three-game losing streak in the SEC. Tennessee outscored Alabama by nine points in the second half. The Volunteers had a 1-2 punch of John Fulkerson and Jordan Bowden, who combined to score 42 points. Yves Pons also scored 14 points and collected 14 rebounds. Tennessee has hung its hat on a balanced attack this season with four players averaging in double figures.

Kentucky continues to be one of the country’s top programs and are 143-40 under John Calipari in SEC regular-season games. They can continue their dominance today against the 13-9 Tennessee Vols, who will be looking for an upset with their home crowd in Knoxville, Tenn.

Prediction: Even though Tennessee will be at home in this matchup, it might not matter when they take on powerhouse Kentucky. Tennessee is getting two points but would still have to go with Calipari’s Wildcats to win this one. Kentucky (-2).
