Wyndham Clark and Xander Schauffele go low, a Monday qualifier steps up and a PGA Tour winner turns into a snake charmer on Moving Day at the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship

Moving Day at Quail Hollow didn’t disappoint, especially in the afternoon.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Moving Day at the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship did not disappoint.

Shortly after the final pairing of Tyrrell Hatton and Nate Lashley teed off at Quail Hollow Club on Saturday there was an 11-way tie atop the leaderboard, and no, that’s not a typo.

The standings were bunched for the early part of the afternoon before Wyndham Clark and Xander Schauffele eventually separated from the pack. Paired together in the penultimate group, Clark fired the low round of the week with a bogey-free 8-under 63 to take the lead at 16 under, while Schauffele was just one shot worse with a 7-under 64 to sit solo second at 14 under.

Fans also saw a Monday qualifier step into the spotlight, a five-time winner become a snake charmer and a left-handed shot you have to see to believe. Here’s what we learned from Saturday’s third round at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Watch: This Sahith Theegala lefty recovery shot at the Wells Fargo Championship is almost too good to believe

Wonder how much Sahith practiced this one.

Sahith Theegala used to intentionally shank shots on the range.

No, seriously. When he was in college at Pepperdine, Theegala would shank shots warming up next to his playing partners for the day to get in their heads. Then he would go and leave them in the dust on the course.

However, it’s hard to imagine Theegala has practiced the shot he pulled off Saturday during the third round of the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club.

On the 11th hole, his tee shot ended up left of the fairway on the pine straw. He wasn’t able to take a normal stance because of a tree, so he went lefty, flipped his club over and swung away.

The recovery shot almost paid off, however, after Theegala pitched his shot to 13 feet, he was unable to make the par putt. Nevertheless, it was still an incredible recovery shot.

Theegala shot an even-par 71 in his third round and sits at 1 under for the tournament.

Rickie Fowler puts his wedge to work Saturday, picking up a snake at the Wells Fargo Championship

What are you doing, Rickie?

Rickie Fowler is having an interesting third round at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Through nine holes at Quail Hollow Club, he was even for the day and 3 under for the tournament, chasing his first PGA Tour win since the 2019 WM Phoenix Open.

However, the highlight of his day probably won’t come from a golf shot.

On Saturday, Fowler channeled his inner Steve Irwin and picked up a snake with a wedge.

This isn’t the first time a player has had an interaction with an animal during a tournament. Cody Gribble famously spanked an alligator on the tail at the 2017 Arnold Palmer Invitational to get it back in the water and away from the rest of the field.

Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa lead list of notable names to miss the cut at the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship

A few big names will be leaving Quail Hollow early.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — This year’s Wells Fargo Championship is the ninth designated event of the PGA Tour season, meaning the 156-player field was competing for a $20 million purse, with a whopping $3.6 million going to the winner.

After two rounds of play at Quail Hollow Club, 68 players made the weekend cut and another 88 are now heading home early and empty handed.

Three players who competed for the American team at the 2022 Presidents Cup last fall at Quail Hollow were sent packing, as well as a major champion, a rising PGA Tour star and a former world No. 1 who seemed to be rounding into form.

Here’s a closer look at some of the notable names who didn’t survive the 36-hole cut at the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship, which came in at 1 under par.

Three-way tie for lead, Max Homa’s blistering back nine and Justin Thomas’ new approach to putting highlight a busy Friday at the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship

Here’s what you missed from Friday’s second round at Quail Hollow.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Nobody has separated from the pack after two rounds of play at the 2023 Wells Fargo Championship. In fact, the leaderboard is rather bunched.

While the usual stars may not be in contention, 37 players are within five shots of the lead entering the weekend, setting up for what could be a thrilling finish at Quail Hollow Club.

Everyone’s favorite Angry Golfer Tyrrell Hatton fired a 6-under 65 to tie the low round of the day and claim a share of the lead at 8 under alongside Nate Lashley (66) and Wyndham Clark (67). Six players are all T-4 and just a shot back at 7 under, including Xander Schauffele, Justin Thomas and Adam Scott.

Rain was in the forecast for Saturday’s third round, but it appears to have cleared up for the final stretch in the Queen City. Here’s what we learned from a busy Friday at Quail Hollow.

Back at Quail Hollow, Presidents Cup stars shine in first round of 2023 Wells Fargo Championship

Of the 24 players who competed in the Presidents Cup, 17 are on hand this week, and 11 are inside the top 40.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — After a successful showing last fall at the Presidents Cup at Quail Hollow Club, Xander Schauffele was feeling the good vibes when he returned to the crown jewel of the Queen City for this week’s 2023 Wells Fargo Championship.

And it showed on the scorecard (through his first 15 holes at least).

Schauffele – who compiled a 3-1-0 record alongside Patrick Cantlay against the International squad in September – was in prime position to lead after day one Thursday, but a pair of costly bogeys over his last three holes left him T-2 with Kevin Streelman, Taylor Moore, Ryan Palmer and K.H. Lee, who teed it up for Trevor Immelman’s worldwide All-Stars.

In a fan-favorite group alongside Presidents Cup teammate Jordan Spieth (72) and opponent Tom Kim (67), Schauffele fired a 5-under 66 to trail Tommy Fleetwood, who birdied his final two holes of the day for a bogey-free 6-under 65, by one. Kim joined Fleetwood in the bogey-free brigade as the only two players to finish the opening round without a blemish on their scorecards.

In his Presidents Cup debut, Kim wowed the crowd at Quail Hollow and finished with a respectable 2-3-0 record, and even squared off against Schauffele and his good friend Cantlay twice. Kim and Hideki Matsuyama lost to Cantlay and Schauffele, 3 and 2, in Friday’s four-ball match, but the South Korean got the upper hand against the American duo alongside fellow countryman Si Woo Kim, 1 up, in Saturday’s four-ball bout.

Of the 24 players who competed in the Presidents Cup, 17 are on hand this week, and 11 are inside the top 40 after round one. Schauffele is T-2 with Lee, while Kim, Cantlay and Adam Scott are all T-6 at 4 under. Even Canadians Taylor Pendrith and Corey Conners, who were both an embarrassingly bad 0-4-0 for the International team, sit T-25 and T-37, respectfully.

While the course isn’t playing the same this week as it did in September due to the different time of year and overseeded grass – not to mention the different competition formats – course knowledge goes a long way at a track as demanding as Quail Hollow, and that proved true once again on Thursday.

Tommy Fleetwood leads, Joe LaCava tries to convert Patrick Cantlay to a NY sports fan and Rory celebrates his birthday among takeaways from Round 1 at the Wells Fargo Championship

Catch up on Thursday’s action here.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Tommy Fleetwood took his lickings the first two times he played tournaments at Quail Hollow Club. But on a sun-drenched Thursday, Fleetwood finally figured this parkland beauty out, finishing birdie-birdie to shoot a bogey-free 6-under 65 and claim the first-round lead at the Wells Fargo Championship.

“You have days like today,” Fleetwood said. “There are plenty of players that shoot great rounds around here. It’s such a beautiful golf course and it’s a pleasure to play, it really, really is, but you just have to play well and that’s all there is to it. I enjoy the challenge, I loved playing today and having a score going and playing like that. I’m looking forward to whatever the week holds. It’s a great course to come and play, but it can just beat you up at times and today was my turn.”

Fleetwood hinted at the tough times, which included a T-61 at the 2017 PGA Championship and a missed cut at this event in 2018. The Englishman started to figure out Quail Hollow’s intricacies in 2021, finishing T-14.

“You can make it as daunting or as simple as you want to make it,” Fleetwood explained.

As for what makes Quail such a tricky old bird? “The scorable holes can actually still kick you,” he said.

Fleetwood, 32, reeled off six straight pars to start the round before jumping into red figures with an eight-foot eagle at No. 7. He tacked on a short birdie at eight and added three more circles to the card on the back nine, including playing Quail Hollow’s vaunted Green Mile – Nos. 16-18 – in 2 under. After driving into the right fairway at 18, he hit his self-proclaimed shot of the day, sticking his approach from 181 yards to seven feet.

“You never know when you’re one swing away from making a birdie,” he said. “There’s good shots out there and you have to always be looking for them and you always have to feel like you can hit one of those. Whether you do or not is a different story, but believing you can is the first part.”

Fleetwood leads by one over five golfers, including Xander Schauffele, who recorded his lowest score in 13 career rounds at Quail Hollow and K.H. Lee, who carded a 66 in the first round for the third straight year.

Here are four more takeaways from the first round of the Wells Fargo Championship.
