Looking back at the last four winning streaks in the Florida-Georgia series

Pat Dooley reviews the last four winning streaks between the Florida Gators and Georgia Bulldogs.

It’s never easy finding a path to victory against a team that is ranked No. 1 in the country and has allowed only four touchdowns all season — one of them was a meaningless score as the clock hit 0:00.

Not easy at all.

Especially for a Florida team that leads the nation in passes picked off. And gave up 49 points in its last game.

But there is a reason why we play the games and you have to remember that every game is its own game. They write books about Florida-Georgia and if there is one reason for Florida to hope the next chapter is a good one, we have to hope the mathematical progression continues.

After the infamous Georgia Stomp game in 2007, each team has been on three-game winning streaks. First the Gators, then the Bulldogs, then the Gators, then the Bulldogs.

Florida broke the latest streak in 2020 so wouldn’t it make sense to keep it going?

Here’s a look at those four mild winning streaks and what happened in each of them:

Mullen says Florida will continue to split QB load against Georgia

Anthony Richardson had to replace Emory Jones last week against LSU, but Dan Mullen says both are preparing to play against Georgia.

Dan Mullen doesn’t think much of depth charts, and he doesn’t really care who the listed starting quarterback will be for Florida on Saturday against Georgia. Instead, Mullen cares about who finishes the game.

Anthony Richardson replaced Emory Jones last week against LSU, reigniting a quarterback controversy that had quieted down since the beginning of the season. When asked about the quarterback situation during his weekly press conference, Mullen said that the two will continue to split reps in practice throughout the week.

“We’ve got to get both guys ready to go play so we get both guys a lot of reps,” Mullen said. “Maybe it’s a little more even than a lot of places where the one gets a lot of reps and the twos get minimal reps. The quarterbacks, we try to keep them pretty evened out so that they’re both ready to play.”

This isn’t the first time Mullen has called the Gators a two-quarterback team, but there’s typically a stronger defense of Emory Jones along with it. That’s not to say that Jones won’t be on the field for the first snap against Georgia, but rather that he might not be there to finish it.

Mullen admitted that poor play from Jones was a factor in the switch last week, and Jones should be on a shorter leash after this week as a result. That said, the plan isn’t changing too much.

“We’re going to keep playing them the same way,” Mullen said. “We plan on playing both guys like we have.”

While some may criticize Mullen for not making a decision, the dual-quarterback offense has its upsides. Mullen mentioned that the defensive schemes Florida sees often depends on what personnel is out there, so using Richardson to draw a blitz could come in handy.

Of course, the split will also depend on health. While Mullen didn’t say either quarterback was dealing with anything currently, he did mention that injuries and availability play a role in deciding what kind of workload a player gets.

Mullen has never been one to disclose too much before the actual game, so there’s no telling what call he’ll make on Saturday. If there was ever a time for Mullen to live up to the moniker “quarterback guru,” now would be it.

SEC Power Rankings: Five teams on bye, SEC West shines

Bye weeks typically call for little movement in the power rankings, but Florida moved up a spot without even playing.

Five of the 14 teams in the Southeastern Conference were on a bye this week, but there was still plenty of action in Week 8.

Florida, Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky and Missouri were all inactive, giving the SEC West a chance to shine. Alabama continued to work its way back to the top of the polls with a win over Tennessee, but the Volunteers put up a fight until the fourth quarter started. Texas A&M, which is the team that handed ‘Bama its only loss, looks like it’s operating at peak efficiency, but it did face a weak opponent in South Carolina on Saturday.

Mississippi State showed everyone why Vanderbilt is at the bottom of the conference, and Ole Miss did what Florida should have done to LSU. Finally, Arkansas got a much-needed win over FCS AR-Pine Bluff after losing three straight conference games.

Even in a “down” week, there’s plenty of SEC action. Here’s how all 14 teams stack up in this week’s power rankings.
