Analyzing Colts’ snap counts from Week 2 loss to Jaguars

Here are the snap counts from the Colts’ 24-0 loss in Week 2 against the Jaguars.

The Indianapolis Colts (0-1-1) made the trip down to TIAA Bank Field only to get embarrassed in a 24-0 loss against the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-1) on Sunday.

There’s no easy way to put it. The loss against the Jaguars was so brutal that it officially put head coach Frank Reich and general manager Chris Ballard on the hot seat. If they don’t turn things around, this could likely be their final season with the team.

Let’s take a look at the offensive, defensive and special teams snap counts from the Week 2 disaster:

Analyzing the snap counts for the Colts in the Week 2 loss to the Rams.

The Indianapolis Colts (0-2) find themselves among the winless teams following their 27-24 loss to the Los Angeles Rams (2-0) on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium

The 0-2 start is a first for head coach Frank Reich since he took over the duties in 2018. The Colts are in the middle of a tough stretch of games to begin the season, and bouncing back is becoming more of a. necessity as each week passes.

Now that Week 2 has come and gone, let’s analyzing the snap counts on offense, defense and special teams:

Offense

Notes

  • In the backfield, Jonathan Taylor led the way with 30 snaps (45%) and 16 touches. Nyheim Hines was right behind him at 25 snaps (37%) but only saw two touches. Marlon Mack had some good run during the second half to the tune of 13 snaps (19%) for five touches.
  • LT Eric Fisher made his debut on Sunday playing 49 out of a possible 67 snaps (73%). When he was taken out of the rotation, Julién Davenport moved over from right tackle to replace Fisher while Matt Pryor filled in for Davenport.
  • WR Michael Pittman Jr. showed immense life on 60 snaps (90%). He recorded career-highs in targets (12), receptions (8) and yards (123). With Parris Campbell out, the Colts leaned heavily on rookie WR Mike Strachan as the third option, playing 51% of the snaps.
  • LB Matthew Adams got some work in at fullback for one play.

Defense & Special Teams

Notes

  • S Khari Willis, LB Bobby Okereke, S Julian Blackmon and LB Darius Leonard were the only players to see 100% of the snaps on defense.
  • Rookie DE Kwity Paye and Al-Quadin Muhammad continue to lead the rotation on the edge for the second week in a row. The duo, along with Tyquan Lewis, remained the only key edge rushers.
  • Speed rushers Kemoko Turay (19%) and Ben Banogu (7%) were both relegated to deep reserve roles in the NASCAR package.
  • CB Isaiah Rodgers was fourth in the rotation but saw an increase in snaps to from 11% in Week 1 to 31% in Week 2. He got things started with a 41-yard kick return to open the game.
  • The Colts didn’t use a third linebacker often as Zaire Franklin played just three snaps (5%) on defense.
  • On special teams, LBs Zaire Franklin and Matthew Adams led the way at 85%. S George Odum led the way with three stops on special teams.

Colts’ snap counts vs. Vikings in Week 2

Snap counts from Week 2.

The Indianapolis Colts (1-1) avoided the dreaded 0-2 start by winning their home opener on Sunday, 28-11, against the Minnesota Vikings (0-2) at Lucas Oil Stadium.

The Colts dominated the game defensively and on offense, the rushing attack led the way to a victory. It was the type of blueprint the Colts envision for their team success. Even through some potentially significant injuries, the Colts pushed through and came out with a big win.

Here’s a look at the offensive snap counts from Sunday’s win:

Observations

  • The backfield belonged to Jonathan Taylor. He led the way with 67% of the snaps while the closest to him was Jordan Wilkins at 23%. Taylor also took 65% of the team’s rushing attempts.
  • While Wilkins was the clear backup, it was a surprise that Nyhiem Hines wasn’t in the game at all. He played just 12% of the snaps while receiving one target and zero carries. This was a bit odd given what we saw in Week 1.
  • Following the injury to Parris Campbell, it was rookie Michael Pittman Jr. who saw the biggest bump. He played 92% of the snaps, leading the way followed by Zach Pascal, who finished at 81%
  • T.Y. Hilton struggled with a bad drop in the end zone and subsequently only played 58% of the offensive snaps. The Colts seemingly wanted their blocking receivers on the field more.

Here’s a look at the defense and special teams snap counts:

Observations

  • LB Bobby Okereke worked as the second linebacker next to Darius Leonard, playing 85% of the snaps. Anthony Walker’s snap count dropped to 57% on defense.
  • After Malik Hooker suffered an Achilles injury, rookie Julian Blackmon was the one to step in. He saw 63% of the snaps alongside Khari Willis.
  • DE Ben Banogu continues to be a non-factor in the gameplan, logging just 22% of the snaps.
  • Zaire Franklin, George Odum and Jordan Glasgow all led the special teams unit again.
