Notre Dame guards projected top-four picks ahead of WNBA draft lottery

This would reflect quite well on the Irish.

Notre Dame guards [autotag]Olivia Miles[/autotag] and [autotag]Sonia Citron[/autotag] are headed for the WNBA after this season. At least that’s the expectation. The real question is how high both players will be picked in the draft.

The WNBA draft lottery will take place Sunday. The participants are the Washington Mystics, Los Angeles Sparks, Dallas Wings and Chicago Sky. According to two projects, Miles and Citron both have a chance to be picked by one of those teams in the top four of the draft.

Tankathon has Miles and Citron going back-to-back at third and fourth, which would be an incredible accomplishment for the Irish. ESPN isn’t as optimistic with Miles going fourth and Citron projected as the final pick of the first round. ESPN previously had Miles going fifth and Citron 11th.

First things first though, both players are focused are bringing the Irish a national championship. Having [autotag]Hannah Hidalgo[/autotag] and rising freshman [autotag]Kate Koval[/autotag] with them will make the journey a lot easier.

The Mystics cleaning house after a failed tank job won’t fix anything

The Mystics’ tank job spectacularly failed, and now the team’s direction feels shaky at best.

The Washington Mystics likely won’t land Paige Bueckers after a failed tank job, and cleaning house will not fix much.

On Wednesday, Washington parted ways with general manager Mike Thibault and his son, head coach Eric Thibault. Eric’s departure is the fifth coach firing since the season ended just over a month ago, and Mike’s is the second general manager opening. But no one should be surprised that the Mystics are seemingly without direction and in a bit of disarray. The writing has been on the walls for quite some time.

Mike famously led Washington to a championship in 2019 as head coach, but failed to recapture any of that magic in the following three years — each of which saw the team finish under .500. When he retired from coaching in 2022 and moved into the front office, Eric took over. Sadly, things did not improve. The Mystics finished 19-21 in 2023.

However, all hope wasn’t entirely lost. There was a perceived optimism that Washington could rebuild and land potential No. 1 Draft pick Paige Bueckers in 2025. That meant committing to tanking the 2024 season. It’s possible Mike and Eric might have been on board with that plan, but the Mystics finished the year 14-26 (9th place) and ownership showed them the door.

How does a disconnect between leadership and ownership happen? It begins with missteps, including straining the relationship with a franchise player from the region.

After a messy offseason ordeal with Elena Delle Donne, which resulted in her sitting out in 2024, Washington needed someone to help push the team forward. Drafting Aaliyah Edwards was a solid start, but Edwards wasn’t quite ready for that pressure, and the Mystics’ maddening rotations didn’t help her develop as much as many thought she would.

Relying on other players like Brittney Sykes and Shakira Austin didn’t pan out, either.

Sykes, Austin and multiple Mystics players were injured for a good portion of the season, putting Washington in a hole early. That should have signaled the Thibaults to wave the white flag and look towards the 2025 draft. But then Washington went on a wild run, pushing for the postseason and seemingly playing itself right out of the best chance for a top draft pick.

As of the Thibaults’ exit,  Washington owns pick No. 4 in next year’s draft, just outside a slot that could land them Bueckers. It’s possible she still lands in Washington, but the franchise would need to ask the basketball gods to work their magic during the WNBA Draft Lottery on November 17.

Moving on from the Thibaults is probably correct if Washington’s ownership feels the rebuild is still on and the team won’t be good in 2026 or 2027. This would put the franchise in a prime position to land someone like women’s college basketball star JuJu Watkins, who could alter the organization’s fabric for the better.

However, the Mystics’ direction is unclear, and removing the franchise’s general manager and head coach will not change that until everyone agrees on which path to take moving forward.

Aaliyah Edwards recapped her WNBA rookie season with a Fresh Prince-inspired TikTok

Grab the tissues!

With the WNBA regular season officially over, some teams are conducting exit interviews and transitioning to the offseason. Among that group is Washington Mystics rookie Aaliyah Edwards, who posted a sad yet super touching TikTok to recap her year.

I can’t blame Aaliyah for soaking in every minute of her first year of professional basketball. It has to be an eye-opening revelation to realize that it will possibly be several months before you pick up a basketball again.

In a new clip, Aaliyah captioned the footage, “Had my Fresh Prince moment” — during the series finale, Will stood in the empty house and then turned off the lights as he walked out — and I had to stop myself from tearing up. The video is just full of precious moments you need to see.

Lip-readers think Caitlin Clark was jokingly told by the Mystics’ coach not to check back in

Eric Thibault seemingly wanted no parts of Caitlin Clark on the court.

Caitlin Clark and Washington Mystics head coach Eric Thibault had a very funny exchange Thursday, and lip-readers think they know what it was about.

So many people came to see the Mystics and Fever regular-season finale. In fact, it was the largest regular-season crowd in WNBA history. Fans were likely in attendance to see Washington potentially make the playoffs and, of course, to see Caitlin Clark.

But, everyone who came to see Caitlin might have been disappointed that she didn’t play a full game, as she was on a minutes restriction ahead of the WNBA playoffs — everyone except Eric Thibault. Some good internet sleuths think they caught Eric chatting it up with Caitlin as she checked back in mid-game. Lip-readers believe he told her, “You don’t have to come back in.”

Fever-Mystics drew the biggest crowd in WNBA history right at regular season’s close

That’s a lot of people!

The WNBA’s regular season for the Indiana Fever and the Washington Mystics ended with a bang on Thursday night.

As rookie guard Caitlin Clark and the Fever made the trip up to D.C. to Capital One Arena, plenty of fans made it to see the regular-season finale.

So many people, in fact, that the game drew the biggest crowd in WNBA history with 20,711 in attendance, according to the game broadcast.

This is an absolutely remarkable moment for the league, even though the starters didn’t really play down the stretch for either team.

If you want to win WNBA trivia one day, remember this game and how many people showed up to see these two teams play. It’s the biggest crowd the league has ever seen for one of its games, as Washington got the 92-91 win.

Notre Dame guard Olivia Miles takes in Chicago Sky game

See what the Irish star is up to.

If Notre Dame’s women’s basketball team is going to have a successful 2024-25 season, much of it will depend on [autotag]Olivia Miles[/autotag]A. After missing the entire 2023-24 season while recovering from a knee injury she suffered late in the 2022-23 season, she’s ready to get back to action.

With the Irish’s first game several weeks away though, Miles simply can’t stay away from live basketball. So she figured the time was right to leave South Bend for a bit to watch the Chicago Sky host the Washington Mystics. The Sky took notice of her presence and decided to spread the word on social media.

Miles expressed gratitude and also got the chance to talk with injured Sky rookie standout Angel Reese.

The game resulted in an 89-58 win for the Mystics, but Miles got to watch two former Irish players for the Sky. [autotag]Lindsay Allen[/autotag] scored six points to go with a team-high five assists, and [autotag]Brianna Turner[/autotag] had four points while leading the Sky with three steals.

Aaliyah Edwards wore a fantastic vintage Rugrats-themed jacket to the Mystics’ camp day game

Yeah, Aaliyah! This is AWESOME.

Aaliyah Edwards wore a vintage Rugrats-themed jacket, and my little 90’s heart cannot get over it.

Aaliyah has been coming with some straight heat since the 2024 WNBA Draft. There was a diamond basketball purse, and then there was a filthy Kobe Bryant tribute jacket that she flaunted earlier this month.

On Tuesday, she stopped during pregame tunnel fits ahead of a matchup with the Phoenix Mercury (and a kids’ camp day) to show off her amazing Rugrats jacket — which I appreciate because Aaliyah wasn’t born when most of the show aired — and give nearby cameras a little twirl to take in her look.

Caitlin Clark got into a brief skirmish with Julie Vanloo during Mystics-Fever

Caitlin Clark and Julie Vanloo got into a brief skirmish during Wednesday’s Mystics-Fever game.

During a tough first half against the Washington Mystics on Wednesday, Indiana Fever rookie guard Caitlin Clark got into a brief skirmish with Mystics guard Julie Vanloo.

While it was indeed more a skirmish than an all-out scuffle, you could tell that Clark and Vanloo were not happy with each other and that it was hard to tell who first got frustrated in the encounter.

You can’t always expect opposing athletes to always be happy with each other in the peak of competition, this was a really curious exchange of unpleasantries between Clark and Vanloo.

We’re sure the Fever underachieving on the court was part of it, but still, it was quite the exchange to watch.

Fans get Jackie Young’s autograph after failing ‘last couple games’

Persistence pays off.

Former Notre Dame guard [autotag]Jackie Young[/autotag] is playing the best basketball of her life with the Las Vegas Aces. That means people want a piece of her, particularly her autograph. In fact, that means so many people that not everyone succeeds at it on a given night.

That finally changed for one persistent family during the Aces’ Fourth of July victory over the Washington Mystics. Mike Dixon of Vegas Sports Today captured the moment Young signed the autographs and briefly asked them about it afterwards:

A quick look at the Aces’ schedule indicates that a week-and-a-half passed recently between home games, so this family had to wait quite a bit after their initial failures. But things always have a way of working out, don’t they?

Young is averaging career highs of 18.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 5.9 assists a game. She will compete for the U.S. in the Paris Olympics alongside fellow former Irish standout [autotag]Jewell Loyd[/autotag].

Aaliyah Edwards wore a sick Kobe Bryant tribute jacket to her Mystics-Sparks matchup

This Kobe Bryant jacket is ELECTRIC, Aaliyah Edwards. WE NEED IT.

Aaliyah Edwards recently wore a stone-cold Kobe Bryant jacket to a matchup with the Los Angeles Sparks, and we cannot get over the details.

She has never been shy about her love for Kobe Bryant. Aaliyah has mentioned numerous times that her braids are yellow because of Kobe Bryant and the Lakers. The rookie even wears the number 24, just like Kobe did.

When she arrived at Crypto.com arena Tuesday ahead of a Washington-Los Angeles matchup, she was fittingly wearing a Kobe Byrant-themed jacket. In a new video shared by Nikki Kay of Spectrum News 1, Aaliyah is smiling away as she twirls in a sick zip-up tribute to Kobe with her fabulous basketball purse she wore to the 2024 WNBA Draft.
