Washington men’s soccer tops Seattle University in NCAA Tournament

The Washington Huskies are moving on in the NCAA Tournament after a victory in penalty kicks over Seattle University.

The Washington Huskies are moving on in the NCAA Tournament following a victory over the Seattle University Redhawks on Thursday night. The matchup was scoreless until penalty kicks, where coach Jamie Clark’s team was able to pull off a 3-0 win in the shootout thanks to goalie Jadon Bowton.

Bowton was the hero of the night, as the Redhawks controlled the pace for the majority of the night and sent 18 shots in his direction. He tallied saves on all 6 shots on goal, including two in overtime, while the Huskies were able to muster 11 shots, 3 on goal, against Redhawks goalkeeper Charlie Lanphier.

After 20 minutes of extra time, the match went to a penalty shootout, where Bowton stopped all three Redhawks shots, the first time he’s done that in his career.

“I don’t think so,” Bowton said after the game when asked if he’s ever saved three straight penalty kicks. “I saved three out of five once, but three in a row, I’ve never done that.”

Charlie Kosakoff, Chris Meyers, and Egor Akulov all found the back of the net for the Huskies to secure the victory and a date with the No. 12 seed SMU Mustangs on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 4:00 p.m. PST.

Washington soccer to face Seattle University to open NCAA Tournament

Washington’s men’s soccer team is facing an in-state battle with Seattle University in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Washington Huskies men’s soccer team has had a very successful first campaign, going 8-5-6 in their first campaign in the Big Ten, including victories over three ranked teams, highlighted by a non-conference upset over No. 4 Oregon State.

That was good enough to get head coach Jamie Clark’s team to its No. 30 appearance in the NCAA Tournament in program history and No. 11 in his tenure, which began in 2011. Washington is set to take on the Seattle University Redhawks in a crosstown rivalry matchup that also decides the Fewing Cup, which the Huskies took home following a 2-1 victory in September.

The Huskies have won five of the last seven matchups against the Redhawks and have been led by fifth-year senior Peter Kingston, who has a team-high 6 goals on the season and was named to the Second Team All-Big Ten, along with sophomore forward Charlie Kosakoff, who has 5.

Washington has hosted a first-round matchup in 10 of 11 appearances in the tournament under Clark, with the only exception being the 2020 tournament, which was all held at a neutral site. The winner of Thursday’s game, which is set for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff, will travel to Dallas for a second-round matchup with the No. 12 seed, SMU.

Washington Women’s Soccer survive shootout to eliminate Utah State

Washington survived on the road at Utah State, advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament thanks to a penalty shootout victory.

In what was a defensive battle that went scoreless through 110 minutes, coach Nicole Van Dyke and the Washington Huskies women’s soccer team prevailed in a penalty shootout 3-1, knocking out No. 25 Utah State on the road in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Huskies didn’t have many opportunities to score in the first-round match, finishing regulation time with no shots on the goal. A quick kick from midfielder Kelsey Branson and a shot faded wide of the post off a header from forward Kalea Eichenberger were as close as they got the entire first half.

The second half of the match was a defensive battle, with goalkeeper Olivia Juarez clearing the ball at the end of regulation to send the game into overtime. Then, with less than a minute remaining in the first overtime period, Juarez, who was stellar and finished her day with 7 saves, collided with an Aggie player and had to be helped off the field.

Junior Mia Hamant replaced her in the net and is in the midst of a breakout year, ranking No. 3 in the Big Ten conference with a .688 goals allowed per game average.

Ioanna Poapatheodorou, Jadyn Holdenried, and Alex Buck all found the back of the net during the penalty shootout, with only Alysia Butters converting for the Aggies.

Washington will face off the winner of Southern University vs. No. 1 seed Mississippi State, which is scheduled for Nov. 16, on Nov. 22, with the time and location to be announced.

Washington women’s soccer receives bid to NCAA Tournament

Washington Women’s Soccer got their ticket to the Big Dance on Monday afternoon.

The Washington Huskies had to sweat out Monday’s selection show for the NCAA Women’s Soccer Tournament. After losing to UCLA in the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament, who went on to win the title, the fate of coach Nicole Van Dyke’s team was uncertain following a very successful campaign that saw them finish 10-6-3.

The Huskies were one of the final teams called during the selection show and are slated to play No. 8-seeded Utah State in Logan, Utah, on Friday, Nov. 15, at 1:00 p.m. PST. The winner of that matchup will face the victors of Southern University and No. 1 seed Mississippi State.

This will be Van Dyke’s second appearance in the NCAA Tournament in her five seasons at Washington, after leading the Huskies to the Sweet 16 in 2020 and appearance No. 17 for the program.

Washington has faced off with Utah State three times and owns a 2-0-1 record against the Aggies, playing their most recent matchup to a 1-1 draw in Logan in 2012.

Washington women’s soccer falls to UCLA 2-0 in Big Ten Tournament

Washington’s magical run in the Big Ten Tournament came to an end at the hands of the UCLA Bruins.

Coach Nicole Van Dyke and the Washington Huskies women’s soccer team had a magical run to the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament but were knocked out on Friday following a 2-0 loss to the No. 8 UCLA Bruins. The Huskies trailed the entire game and were no match for the Bruins.

UCLA outshot the Huskies 19-2 shots on the night, including an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Mia Hamant made 2 saves on the day but was unable to stop an own goal to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute.

Hamant was beaten by defender Ayo Oke to double the lead in the 35th minute before being lifted for senior Olivia Juarez, who recorded 5 saves over the remainder of the game.

Senior Ioanna Papatheodorou played in her second straight game after being called up to the Greek national team but had a quiet match with just one shot on goal. Senior defender Jace Holmes had the only other shot on goal for the Huskies.

Van Dyke’s team will have to wait until Monday, Nov. 11, to know their fate when the 2024 NCAA DI women’s soccer selection show announces the 64-team championship field for the single-elimination tournament. Thirty teams will earn an automatic birth, with the other 34 being selected by the Division I Women’s Soccer Committee.

Washington star Ioanna Papatheodorou called up to Greek National Team

Washington soccer star Ioanna Paptheodorou will spend some time away from the Huskies after being called up to Grece’s national team.

Ioanna Paptheodorou has emerged as a clutch goal-scoring forward for the Washington Huskies this season. It seems as if her homeland of Greece wants her to bring some of that magic to their team, as they have called her up to play on the national team in the next round of qualifiers for the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 Cup.

This is the Washington senior’s second time representing her county after making her debut in 2020. Paptheodorou transferred to Washington in 2023 after spending two years at UMass Lowell. Now in her senior year on Montlake, she has emerged as the team’s leading scorer and has the highest shot-on-goal percentage.

The Greek national team will meet Belgium in Crete, Greece on October 28, then head to Leuven, Belgium on October 29 for a second matchup.

Coach Nicole Van Dyke’s team didn’t miss a beat in their first game without her, earning a first round bye in the Big Ten tournament after they knocked off Oregon on Sunday by a final score of 3-0.

Ioanna Papatheodorou starred in victories over Michigan and Michigan State and was named the NCAA’s Player of the Week.

Ioanna Papatheodorou had an outstanding week for the Washington Huskies, scoring two braces in games against Michigan and No. 5 ranked Michigan State, and has been named the NCAA’s Player of the Week for her efforts.

The senior forward from Athens, Greece, also became the team’s first Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week since Washington made the move to its new conference.

Papatheodorou is in her second season with the Huskies after transferring from UMass Lowell and has scored 7 goals on the season, tying her for No. 9 in the conference. Her two goals in the big victory over the No. 5 Spartans, a team that is well on its way to the NCAA Tournament, came on free kicks after Washington fell behind in the match.

The Huskies have one more road game left of the season as coach Nicole Van Dyke’s team will take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers in Lincoln on October 20. Papatheodorou and the rest of the Huskies will finish up their season against the rival Oregon Ducks at Husky Soccer Stadium on October 27 at 3:00 p.m.

Ioanna Papatheodorou leads Washington women’s soccer to 2-1 win over No. 5 Michigan State

The Washington Huskies earned their first win over a top 5 opponent since 2017.

Senior forward Ioanna Papatheodorou scored her second brace of the week at Husky Soccer Stadium, finding the net on a free kick and leading the Washington Huskies to a 2-1 win over the No. 5 Michigan State Spartans. She also put herself firmly in contention for Big Ten Player of the Week after a dominant performance against Michigan earlier in the week.

The Huskies trailed for the first 21 minutes of the match until Papatheodorou sailed one into the net from 33 yards out to knot the score at 1-1 going into halftime.

Midfielders juniors Kelsey Branson and Tatum Thompson had shots on goal in the second half, but the Huskies couldn’t find the back of the net until Papatheodorou’s second goal and game-winner, at the 85-minute mark with a free kick off a foul she drew.

Senior goalie Mia Hamant stopped 5 shots on goal as the Huskies managed to outshoot their opponents 16-9 on the afternoon.

The upset was a huge win for the program, which is now ranked No. 24 by Top Drawer Soccer, and is coach Nicole Van Dyke’s first win over a top-five opponent since 2017. The Huskies moved to 8-4-2 overall and 5-3 in the Big Ten with the win and will travel to Iowa City next to meet the Iowa Hawkeyes on October 17.

Washington men’s soccer makes its way into the rankings at No. 24

Washington’s men’s soccer team has found its way into the top 25.

The Washington Huskies men’s soccer team landed in the rankings for the first time this season at No. 24 in the Top Drawer Soccer poll while coming in as the top team receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll. Led by coach Jamie Clark, who is in year No. 12 at the helm, the team has started the season strong with a 2-1-2 record and has gone unbeaten in four straight matches.

Over that streak, the Huskies have recorded a 1-0 upset victory over No. 4 Oregon State and a 2-2 draw with No. 9 Denver.

Clark has led the team to 10 NCAA trips to the NCAA Tournament in his career, and in 2023, he led the Huskies to 2-0 victories over both national championship finalists, Maryland and Akron.

With 24 players returning this year, the Huskies are led by senior all-conference honoree Chris Meyers, who was named Top Drawer Soccer’s player of the week and to the national team of the week following three consecutive matches with an assist.

Fifth-year senior and Kirkland, Washington native Peter Kingston leads the Huskies in goals and assists, with 2 of each through the team’s first five matches.

Washington comes back to Montlake on September 9 for the annual Fewin Cup against Seattle University. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m. PT at Husky Stadium and will be streaming on B1G+.
