Analyzing Thursday’s Washington Capitals at Buffalo Sabres odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Washington Capitals (37-30-11) visit the Buffalo Sabres (37-37-5) Thursday evening. Puck drop from KeyBank Center is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Capitals vs. Sabres odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Capitals snapped a 6-game losing streak with a 2-1 road win over the Detroit Red Wings Tuesday. LW Alex Ovechkin and C Dylan Strome each found the back of the net for the Capitals in the 2nd period to give them a 2-0 lead, and a 3rd-period goal from Detroit was not enough to complete the comeback.

The Sabres have lost back-to-back games after falling 3-2 against the Dallas Stars Tuesday. RW Alex Tuch and D Rasmus Dahlin each scored for Buffalo in the 1st period, but a 2-goal 2nd period from Dallas proved to be too much to handle.

Capitals at Sabres projected goalies

Charlie Lindgren (12-8-2, 2.71 GAA, .906 SV%) vs. Craig Anderson (9-7-2, 2.70 GAA, .920 SV%, 1 SO)

Lindgren gets the nod after Darcy Kuemper started at home on Saturday. While Lindgren has been on the losing end of his last 2 starts, while earning just a single victory in his last 5 starts and 7 appearances, it’s not his fault.

Lindgren has allowed 3 or fewer goals in each of his last 5 starts, but he has received just 11 goals of support during the span, or 2.2 goals per game (GPG).

Anderson turned aside a whopping 49 out of 50 shots in Friday’s 3-1 win at Florida, and he has managed a 1-1-0 record, 2.53 GAA and .930 SV% in 2 starts and 3 appearances in February.

Capitals at Sabres picks and predictions

Prediction

Sabres 4, Capitals 2

Moneyline

The SABRES (-120) are playing great hockey, as they make a push for a playoff spot for the 1st time since the 2010-11 season.

The Capitals (+100) grabbed a much-needed win Saturday, but they’re still on the outside looking in for a playoff spot, too. This is a very important game for both teams, but a tough spot for Washington. It is 1-7 in the last 8 games when playing on no rest, while going 1-4 in the last 5 against Atlantic Division teams.

Puck line/Against the spread

The SABRES -1.5 (+200) are worth playing lightly for the chance to double up. It might take an empty-net goal late to push this bet across the finish line, but the way Buffalo is playing, it is worth a roll of the dice.

Over/Under

The UNDER 6.5 (-115) is way to go in Sunday’s matinee action.

The Caps have cashed the Under in 6 of the last 8 outings, although it did hit the Over Saturday. However, the Under is 3-1-1 in the last 5 on the road, while going 7-0-2 in Washington’s last 9 when playing on no rest.

The Sabres have cashed the Under in 5 of the last 7 games against Eastern Conference foes, while going 4-1-1 in the last 6 against Metropolitan Division opponents.

  • Over/Under: 6 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Capitals at Sabres: Projected starting goalies

Ilya Samsonov (1-0-0, .846 SV%, 4.00 GAA) vs. Linus Ullmark (2019-20 stats: 17-14-3, .915 SV%, 2.69 GAA)

Samsonov figures to get the bulk of the starts for the Capitals this season, his second in the NHL. He went 16-6-2 with a .913 save percentage and 2.55 goals against average while backing up Braden Holtby (now with the Vancouver Canucks) in his 2019-20 rookie season. He stopped 22 of 26 shots Thursday.

Ullmark should draw in to replace Carter Hutton, who allowed five goals on 27 shots Thursday. Ullmark enters his sixth season with the Sabres with a career save percentage of .911 and a 2.81 GAA.

Capitals at Sabres: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Capitals 5, Sabres 2

Money line (ML)

The CAPITALS (-135) come at a fine price to complete the back-to-back sweep of the Sabres. Buffalo is expected to make a major stride forward this season, but the early schedule isn’t doing any favors. The Sabres will next head on the road for two games against the Philadelphia Flyers and another back-to-back against the Capitals in Washington, D.C.

Washington outshot Buffalo 23-17 through two periods and was up 4-2 after 40 minutes Thursday. The Sabres had pulled within one, but the Caps got a late empty-netter from RW Garnet Hathaway to seal the two-goal win.

Against the spread (ATS)

Get better value with the CAPITALS -1.5 (+195) by backing them to win by at least 2 goals. It took an empty-netter to do so Thursday, but the game was never really in question and Buffalo never held a lead.

We should expect a stronger performance from Samsonov if he does start once again. The Sabres are more likely to pivot to the lesser half of their goaltending tandem.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 6 (-110). The Capitals and Sabres hit this number within the first 39 minutes Thursday and even sloppier play should be expected in the second of back-to-back games.

The Sabres hadn’t played since March 9 before Thursday and playing two nights in a row right off the start of the season will be a big test.
