Report: Warriors planning on retaining Kevon Looney past his $8 million guarantee date

The Warriors are reportedly planning on retaining Kevon Looney past his contract guarantee date.

While all the attention is on the future of pending free agent Klay Thompson, the Golden State Warriros will have another decision to make regarding one of their longtime veterans.

Veteran center Kevon Looney’s name and future with Golden State have been the subject of various rumors and speculation as the offseason approaches.

While some reports have indicated the Warriors would move on from Looney during the summer, Anthony Slater of The Athletic recently reported that he Warriors are planning on retaining Looney past his contract guarantee date on Monday, June 24. The Warriors could still include Looney in a trade during the offseason, but they could also keep him on the roster at $8 million next season.

Via @anthonyVslater on Twitter:

The three-time NBA champ is coming off a quiet season, averaging 4.5 rebounds on 59.7% shooting from the field with 5.7 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. At 16.1 minutes per game, Looney played his lowest number of minutes per game since 2019. With the arrival of standout rookie Trayce Jackson-Davis, Looney started only 36 games last season for the Warriors.

At 28-years-old, Looney is heading into the final year of his contract with the Warriors.

Donte DiVincenzo sends parting message to Warriors fans

Donte DiVincenzo sent a goodbye message to Golden State Warriors via his Instagram page.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8169″]

Donte DiVincenzo became a fan favorite during his tenure with the Golden State Warriors. While not the most skilled guard, DiVincenzo plays with heart and hustle and always fights on every possession.

Unfortunately, the Warriors were unable to keep hold of DiVincenzo, as the impressive guard joined the New York Knicks on a four-year $50 million deal.

New York has done a solid job of adding gritty talent in recent years, with Josh Hart being a huge addition to their team around the February 9 trade deadline.

As such, it’s clear that DiVincenzo will slot straight into what the Knicks are doing. For Golden State, losing DiVincenzo – a key rotation player – will be a big loss, not only for their perimeter defense but also in regards to having a secondary creator and scorer who can both start and come off the bench.

Despite only being with the Warriors for one season, DiVincenzo has still taken the time to send a parting message to the fanbase. On July 13, the 26-year-old guard posted a goodbye message to his Instagram account.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Cup7h91u6t5/?igshid=Y2IzZGU1MTFhOQ%3D%3D

“GSW family, From the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU!! Much love, #0,” DiVincenzo’s message read.

In his lone season with the Warriors, DiVincenzo participated in 72 regular-season games, starting 36 of them. During those games, the former first-round draft pick averaged 9.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists, shooting 43.5% from the field and 39.7% from 3-point range.

DiVincenzo will certainly be a big loss to the Warriors next season. However, the additions of Chris Paul and Cory Joseph will certainly soften the blow as the Warriors put their faith in veteran leadership and on-court experience. Golden State will now begin to turn their attention toward training camp and the upcoming season, where they will be hoping to contend for another championship ring.

Warriors fans pinpoint former wing as potential target if waived

The former Golden State Warriors wing could be a potential target, should his current team waive him in the coming months.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8169″]

Mike Dunleavy has made some big moves since taking over as the Golden State Warriors general manager, from re-signing Draymond Green to a four-year deal, swapping Jordan Poole for Chris Paul, and acquiring Cory Joseph in free agency, along with Dario Saric. However, Dunleavy’s job isn’t done, as the Warriors’ roster still needs to be rounded out.

According to some Warriors fans on Reddit, former wing Otto Porter Jr. could potentially be waived by the Toronto Raptors during the summer or the early part of the season. Those same fans would like to see Golden State bring their former player back to San Francisco if the opportunity arises.

What are your thoughts on bringing back Otto?
by u/Therealomerali in warriors

Porter Jr. was with the Warriors throughout the 2021-22 NBA season, participating in 63 regular-season games, averaging 8.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game while shooting 46.4% from the field and 37% from deep. Once the postseason rolled around, Porter Jr. participated in 19 games for Golden State en route to the only championship of his career.

In order to acquire Porter Jr. – assuming he does eventually get waived by the Raptors – he would likely need to agree on a veteran minimum deal for the current season before hitting free agency in 2024. That sort of deal could work for both sides, Porter Jr. could rebuild some value while contending for a championship, while Golden State would have valuable depth at the small and power forward positions.

A lot would need to happen in order for Porter Jr. to end up back with the Warriors, and that all rests on how the Raptors decided to move forward with their current roster and whether they look to re-tool or rebuild. Yet, if Porter Jr. does become available, Golden State will likely be at the top of his list of preferred destinations.

Jonathan Kuminga shares thoughts on recent Warriors addition

The Golden State Warriors forward shared his thoughts on the team’s recent guard addition.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8169″]

Recently, Draymond Green shared his opinion that the Golden State Warriors‘ addition of Chris Paul would allow Jonathan Kuminga to flourish. Since joining the Warriors as the seventh overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, Kuminga has slowly begun to cement himself in the team’s rotation but is clearly capable of taking his game to another level.

Recently, Kuminga sat down for an exclusive interview with Sports Illustrated’s ‘Inside the Warriors,’ where the athletic forward discussed the Warriors’ acquisition of the veteran point guard. During the interview, Kuminga also discussed his thoughts on how the Warriors’ style of play would make Paul’s addition an interesting fit.

“I was surprised,” Kuminga said. “Watching CP growing up, the way he plays a different type of basketball than the Warriors. Me being on the Warriors for the for the past two years now, we play a different type of basketball playing at a fast pace. We move off the ball a lot. I’m just looking forward to seeing how it’s gonna work, and I feel like CP is a smart player. He has a lot of experience, and I feel like he’s gonna bring so much that we didn’t have on the team, and I’m looking forward to it.”

Kuminga and Paul will likely both come off the bench for the Warriors next season, allowing the two to develop chemistry together. Hopefully, while Paul and Kuminga share the court, Green’s vision of Kuminga developing his game under Paul’s guidance can become a reality, and the Warriors can become increasingly dynamic.

Mike Dunleavy hints at another Warriors move

Mike Dunleavy isn’t opposed to the idea of bringing in one more player to round out the Golden State Warriors roster.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8169″]

On July 10, Golden State Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy addressed the media following a summer league practice in Las Vegas. During the press conference, Dunleavy discussed the Warriors’ recent off-season moves while also taking questions regarding the team’s current needs.

Currently, the Warriors roster is short on size at the center position, with no player on the roster measuring above 6’10”. In an NBA that currently possesses multiple elite big men, having additional size and length in the rotation is a core necessity to competing at the highest level. As such, it’s no surprise that Dunleavy isn’t closing the door on bringing another new face into the rotation before the new season begins in October.

“I think we’re going to add somebody with some size, but we have to be careful with the way we play, the way the league works,”  Dunleavy said. “Just bringing in somebody that’s tall – you have to be skilled, you have to know how to play. I think we’ve learned that over the past few years. So we’ll always prioritize that, but the taller and longer a player is, the better.”

https://twitter.com/CjHolmes22/status/1678613559482384387

Golden State recently alleviated some of its size issues by adding Dario Saric to the roster. However, it would make sense for the Warriors to add one more big body so they have enough depth to navigate any potential injuries or load management issues that appear throughout the regular season.

After all, Dunleavy has made multiple moves to put the Warriors back in championship contention next season. Yet sustaining elite-level performances throughout the basketball year requires significant depth. Now, it’s just about finding the right player and hoping they agree to a veteran minimum deal in return for contending for a championship ring.

Warriors fans call for reunion with former all-action wing

With the Golden State Warriors precarious cap situation, some fans believe the former wing could help round out the team’s roster ahead of next season.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8169″]

Mike Dunleavy will be shopping in the veteran minimum section of free agency as he looks to fill out the remaining spots on the Golden State Warriors roster. Finding veteran role players willing to take the minimum and spend most of the season on the bench is never easy. Yet, with the team’s current cap situation, it’s essential Dunleavy perfects his sales pitch.

One player who some Warriors fans believe could be attainable is Juan Toscano-Anderson, as discussed in a recent Reddit post. The former Golden State wing is an unrestricted free agent this summer and could be available for a minimum contract.

Toscano-Anderson spent three seasons with the Warriors between 2019 and 2022, playing in 139 regular-season games and producing 4.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.2 assists on 36.1% shooting from deep and 63% shooting from two-point range.

Juan Toscano-Anderson is a free agent should the warriors sign him?
by u/andresantanajr in warriors

Bringing back a former fan favorite to comprise a deep bench role would likely appease the Warriors fan base. Furthermore, Toscano-Anderson could provide cover at both the shooting guard and small forward positions, giving Steve Kerr additional line-up flexibility throughout the regular season.

Golden State would still need to locate a backup big man, though. Currently, the Warriors don’t have a single player on their roster that’s taller than 6’9”. Such a lack of size will certainly cause some lineup issues if Dunleavy is unable to add a bigger body during the free agency period.

Fortunately, there are still some legitimate bigs available on the free agent market, including the recently waived Bol Bol, who would add size and shooting to Golden State’s bench rotation. For now, though, all we can do is wait and see how the Warriors look to navigate filling out the remainder of their roster.

Key Warriors rotation piece not expected to return

A key member of last seasons Golden State Warriors rotation is not expected to return to the team next season.

[anyclip pubname=”2123″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8169″]

On June 27, it was reported that Donte DiVincenzo was not picking up his player option with the Golden State Warriors. It would appear that DiVincenzo is unlikely to return to the Bay Area next season.

Speaking on a recent episode of the HoopsHype Podcast, Michael Scotto and The Athletics’ Anthony Slater discussed DiVincenzo’s immediate future, noting how the 26-year-old could ‘double’ what the Warriors can offer him on his next contract.

“Donte DiVincenzo won’t return to the Golden State Warriors, I’m told,” Scotto said. “He’s earned a pay raise. He may double what he could’ve gotten from Golden State. The Knicks are one of a handful of teams interested. When it comes to DiVincenzo, he’s competing in this market for similar money from mid-level exception teams with Bruce Brown and maybe Max Strus.”

DiVincenzo signed a two-year deal worth $9.2 million with the Warriors last summer. The second year of the contract was a player option. DiVincenzo will now look to parlay his strong season in Golden State into a longer-term deal elsewhere in the NBA.

In 72 regular-season games, DiVincenzo produced a statline of 9.4 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists while shooting 43.5% from the field and 39.7% from deep.

With a reputation as a reliable perimeter defender who can also provide floor spacing and secondary playmaking, DiVincenzo could find himself fielding calls from multiple teams around the league this summer. As Slater noted during the podcast episode, DiVincenzo has created a reputation for being a winning player.

“He’s versatile and can play various roles,” Slater said, “He’s well liked in the locker room. He hit the three well last year off the dribble at times even. He’s kind of a secondary playmaker. He rebounds incredibly well for his position. He wins. He won in college. He was on a Bucks team that won the championship. He was a winning component to the Warriors last year.”

It will be interesting to see how the Warriors look to replace DiVincenzo this summer, especially after already trading away Jordan Poole for Chris Paul. Still, DiVincenzo has earned the opportunity to test the free-agent waters and will likely receive a significant pay rise because of it.

Report: Warriors have expressed interest in free agent guard Jeremy Lin

According to a report from weixin.com, the Golden State Warriors have expressed “a clear interest” in free-agent guard Jeremy Lin.

Once Bob Myers and Steve Kerr make the No. 2 overall selection in the NBA Draft, the Golden State Warriors will need to turn their attention to the free-agent market.

With expensive contracts linked to players like Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins, the Warriors will need to get creative when it comes to adding players in free agency.

Despite three All-Stars and the former Rookie of the Year on the roster, Golden State will need to add pieces to catch the Los Angeles Lakers at the top of the Western Conference.

One option could be to bring a former member of the Warriors back to the Bay Area. According to a report from Weixin.com, translated by HoopsHype, the Warriors have expressed “clear interest” in veteran guard Jeremy Lin.

Via Weixin.com (H/T HoopsHype):

According to reliable sources, the Golden State Warriors have already expressed a clear interest in Jeremy Lin.

After recording minutes for the Atlanta Hawks and Toronto Raptors in 2018-19, Lin spent the 2019-20 season playing in the CBA for the Beijing Ducks. In 29 games, Lin averaged 22.3 points on 49.1% shooting from the field with 5.7 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 1.8 steals per contest.

Watch highlights from Lin’s season-high 36 points for the Ducks via YouTube:

In 2010, Lin started his NBA career with the Golden State Warriors. The point guard played 29 games for the Warriors during his rookie campaign, averaging 2.6 points on 38.9% shooting from the field with 1.4 assists and 1. 2 rebounds in 9.8 minutes per game.

During his only season in the Bay Area, Lin shared the backcourt with Curry.

Behind Curry, Steve Kerr’s options currently consist of Jordan Poole, Ky Bowman and Damion Lee. While each showed glimpses during Curry’s absence last season, the Warriors need a consistent secondary ball-handler in their backcourt unit.

With both Curry and Thompson coming off significant injuries, Kerr will need a reliable guard to control his offense when the Splash Brothers are off the floor.

If Lin does land in Golden State, the 32-year-old guard could bring a level of experience the Golden State backcourt has missed since the departure of Shaun Livingston.
