Blizzard has reportedly canceled an unannounced Warcraft mobile game

Netease worked with Blizzard on a mobile Warcraft MMORPG for three years, but it was scrapped for business reasons.

Netease was seemingly co-developing a Warcraft mobile MMORPG with Blizzard, but the project has been canceled due to a financial dispute.

According to Bloomberg, Netease recently split up a team of more than 100 developers that were working on a mobile title set in the Warcraft universe. Codenamed Neptune, the project was in development for three years — and it wasn’t a direct port of World of Warcraft either. Instead, this spinoff would be built from the ground up for smartphones. It’s worth noting Warcraft Arclight Rumble, another smartphone game, isn’t what was canceled here.

There aren’t any specifics as to why things went south. Netease, which publishes World of Warcraft in China, also worked alongside Blizzard on the highly-controversial Diablo Immortal. Sources in the report claimed that there was a disagreement regarding financial terms on the now-canceled Warcraft game between Blizzard and Netease.

It’s unfortunate, but Blizzard still has quite a number of titles coming out relatively soon. Overwatch 2, Wrath of the Lich King Classic, and Dragonflight should all release this fall. Meanwhile, Diablo 4 is slated for sometime in 2023. The company also recently purchased another studio to assist with World of Warcraft content.

Blizzard is bringing Warcraft to mobile

Everyone has phones, after all.

The past several months have been  exceptionally turbulent at Blizzard Entertainment, but the studio is still working on new games. One of which being a mobile title in the Warcraft  series.

Activision Blizzard  shared its 2021 fourth-quarter financial results  report  for investors on Thursday, with a section detailing what Blizzard is working on this year. One particular note regarding Warcraft’s  future was quite illuminating.

“Blizzard is planning substantial new content for the Warcraft  franchise in 2022, including new experiences in World of Warcraft  and Hearthstone, and getting all-new mobile Warcraft  content into players’ hands for the first time,” reads the report.

There’s no word on what that ‘content’ could be, as many imaginations are running wild over the thought of a brand-new Warcraft  title. Of course, it could just be a port of an existing game, which didn’t pan out well when Blizzard announced Diablo: Immortal  in 2018. With how good mobile games on  iOS  and  Android  are these days, fans should keep an open mind.

Blizzard also let everyone know the studio is working on a survival title set in an original universe. It seems as though the company being bought by Microsoft didn’t slow down the workflow any.
